Onslow Photovoice Project This Photovoice project gave seven young women, ages 11-16, the opportunity to explore their creativity, self-identity and connection to their homeland through photography. For six weeks, Fernama Miller, Brodi James, Kiara Parker, Kassim Allen, Breeann Hubert, Bianca Miller and Rohannah Hayes (and guest participant Sherahna Black) ventured out to the local area including Onslow town, Peedamulla Station, Ashburton River and Thevernard Island. By capturing images of the unique Pilbara landscape they were able to engage in a process that encouraged creativity and well-being while developing their visual literacy skills. The process of photography can often shape the way we see the world we live in.This project invited these young women to photograph what caught their interest, which in turn, empowered them to see the beauty in their own lives in a new way. This book provides a platform for their photography to be shared and recognised within the wider community, while giving insight into these young women’s values and their relationship to the environment.

To the participants of the photovoice project: Fernama, Brodi, Kiara, Kassim, Breeann, Bianca and Rohannah. Your courage, creativity and participation has been an inspiration.Thank you for sharing the images from your journey. Your photographs are beautiful and enriching, and give insight into being a young woman in Onslow and your connection to the land. It has been an honour and delight to work with you on this project, an experience that I will always cherish. May you progress forward into the future with confidence in your ability to succeed, and belief in your natural talents and intelligence.
