We have a variety of workshops and sessions and you decide which you would like to try. You can read more about the courses we offer in this brochure and on our website www.liferooms.org. We add new courses and opportunities throughout the year so please keep checking the website for the most up to date information or call in and see us. With us you can learn more about supporting recovery, living with and managing mental health conditions, or exploring creative opportunities which may reignite a passion or find a new one. Our courses encourage a richer life through learning whilst emphasising hope, control and opportunity. We now offer over 50 different courses and we are always developing more. We work on a model of co-production and welcome students, carers, community members and Mersey Care staff to explore and develop new learning opportunities with us. We recognise that recovery is a journey, not an end point and the facilitators on our courses bring their own skills and lived experience of mental health; they understand. We will support you so that you can gain the confidence you need to do the things you want to do and be the person you want to be.
What is recovery learning? Recovery learning is a journey of understanding that supports you to manage and explore what mental ill health is. Recovery learning is about listening, sharing and celebrating our differences while supporting each other in a journey that promotes hope, choice and opportunity. Our courses are co-produced and co-delivered to capture as many experiences as possible. By sharing our experiences we are better informed and more able to support you. We are different to traditional education because our courses are designed and delivered by people who have experienced mental ill health or worked in mental health services. We understand.
3
Through periods of mental distress or illness we can experience feelings of hopelessness, a lack of control or opportunities available to us. At Recovery College we work with you to create opportunities and restore hope through learning. • Choice – the courses you attend should be chosen by you. We believe you are the best person to know what aids your recovery. We don’t replace any medical treatment or advice but we can be a useful accompaniment to your recovery. When you choose what you want to know more about, you take control of your own journey
• Hope – lots of our staff will be able to share their experiences of living with a mental health diagnosis. Our courses aim to teach strategies to help you to manage symptoms and improve your quality of life
• Opportunities – we aim to ignite passions and provide you with chances to expand on your learning. You can then continue these experiences in the wider community, we will help you to identify opportunities to further develop your interests beyond the Recovery College
Co-production – opportunities for all We welcome and encourage people to co-produce with us. Recovery College courses are designed to provide our students with information about mental health, illness and understanding mental health conditions. We aim to promote hope and opportunity to all whilst exploring new experiences. We openly invite staff and others with professional experience, as well as people with lived experience of mental health challenges, to come forward and coproduce unique, recovery focused courses with us.
Working within Mersey Care teams If your team would like the Recovery College to come to you and deliver a 30 minute taster session for any of our courses, with the opportunity to discuss and enrol afterwards, please contact us. Understanding depression
Alcohol and drugs appear to be everywhere. There are so many different types; it’s hard to know what is what and whether it is safe. Are all the rumours you hear true?
A diagnosis of depression can be frightening but with the right information on your side, things can get easier.
Join us in a judgment free environment to filter out the facts from the myths. In this session you will be able to talk with others who want to learn more about acceptable levels of use and the risks of addiction. We will also identify different drugs and their properties.
Understanding obsessive compulsive disorder Obsessive compulsive disorder is a form of anxiety disorder, but many people find it difficult to understand or explain it. In this workshop we will discuss what OCD is, it’s possible causes and some treatments and coping strategies. The session will cover some theory plus its practical application to real life.
9
Explore some of the myths and facts associated with depression and discuss strategies for coping while identifying signs and symptoms. You may be surprised that experiences which feel so isolating can be shared by so many people. Our workshop starts to look at how you can contribute to an improved quality of life whilst living with a diagnosis of depression.
Understanding psychosis Being told that you or a loved one have had an experience of psychosis can be overwhelming. But psychosis is common. Challenge what you think you know about psychosis and how recovery can work for people who have experiences of psychosis. Learn more about why it happens as well as what the symptoms can be. Sharing experiences and discussing how symptoms are managed can be really helpful.
Understanding anxiety
Managing anxiety
Everybody gets anxious. It only becomes a problem when it affects what you do. Some people get severely anxious to the point where it affects their daily life.
Anxiety is an experience that we all endure at some time in our lives. It becomes a problem when it starts to have a negative impact on our lives. So what can we do about it?
This course aims to give you an understanding of what anxiety is, what the causes are, and what its effects are. You will also look at how anxiety keeps itself going through the ‘vicious circle’. Most people who have attended this course like to further develop their knowledge by enrolling to our managing anxiety course.
Creating a postive body image Do you feel that society and the media affect how you feel about your own body? Do you wish that you could have more control over feeling good about your own body? Come along to learn ways to promote positive body image and identify strategies for creating positive body image.
This session is a great follow-on from attending understanding anxiety or as a standalone session for those who simply wish to learn the techniques, strategies and tips to help keep anxiety under control. Following this course you may wish to develop your strategies further by attending advanced anxiety management.
Advanced anxiety managment Most of our students report anxiety affecting their life for long periods of time. Some of our students face a continuing battle and may benefit from further learning. This course is designed to explore anxiety management strategies in more detail. Those wishing to attend advanced anxiety management should first attend understanding anxiety and managing anxiety.

Nordic walking is an easy Scandinavian walking technique which is twice as effective at burning calories as regular walking.
Walking is one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illness, some cancers and dementia; it helps to manage weight and is great for boosting energy and mood.
Nordic walking gently improves fitness using special, light weight poles. You work the upper body, as well as the legs, whilst supporting the joints. This is a great social activity so if you are new to fitness, returning to fitness from injury, or fancy a challenge and want to try something a little different then Nordic walking could be just for you.
