Julie Herndon At That Time
At That Time a chamber opera in one act by Julie Herndon with text by Gertrude Stein for Decoder Ensemble and Jessica Aszodi soprano, clarinet, percussion, zither, keys, cello, light and electronics LIBRETTO 1. Who I Was (6’) Gertrude, Alice, Keys I was born in San Francisco, California. I have in consequence always preferred living in a temperate climate but it is difficult to find a temperate climate and live in it. My mother’s father was a pioneer. He came to California in ‘49, he married my grandmother who was very fond of music. She was a pupil of Clara Schumann’s father. My mother was a quiet charming woman named Emilie. I myself have had no liking for violence and have always enjoyed the pleasures of needlework and gardening, vegetables and fruit trees. I like a view but I like to sit with my back turned to it. I led in my childhood the gently bred existence of my kind. At nineteen I had a letter, but did not feel justified to keep it, at any rate it no longer exists. Up to my twentieth year I was seriously interested… My mother had died and while there was no unconquerable sadness, there was no real interest that led me on. In the story is given a very good description of me as I was at that time. 2. No Writing (3’30”) All players All this time I did no writing. I had written and was writing nothing. Nothing inside me needed to be written. Nothing needed any word and there was no word inside me that could not be spoken and so there was no word inside me. And I was not writing. I began to worry about identity. I had always been I because I had words that had to be written inside me and now any word I had inside could be spoken it did not need to be written. I am I because my little dog knows me. But was I I when I had no written word inside me. I sometimes thought I would try but to try is to die and so I did not really try. I was not doing any writing. Inside and outside and identity is a great bother. I am a pretty good housekeeper and a pretty good gardener and a pretty good needlewoman and a pretty good secretary and a pretty good editor and a pretty good vet for dogs and I have to do them all at one and I found it difficult to add being a pretty good author. It was a strange year that year and it is a strange year this year.
3. It Went So (5’30”) All players It was tomorrow which was yesterday and it was exciting, it was the first time I had ever been present when anything of mine had been played for the first time and I was not nervous but it was exciting. It went so very well. Gradually it was ending and we went out and on to the stage and there where I never had been with everything in front all dark and we bowing and all of them coming and going and bowing, and then again not only bowing but coming again and then as if it was everything, it was all over and we went back to sit down. 4. Reflections (1’) Cello 5. We Went Back (1’30”) Gertrude, Keys, Zither, Cello We went back again to Paris and going back I saw the only thing I have ever seen from an airplane that was frightening, a wide layer of fog close to the water, but the large part near the shore was clear […] the earth is nice to look down on in the spring, we are tied to this earth but after all that is not such a bad thing. 6 Airplanes (4’) Gertrude, Alice (clarinet), Keys I love airplanes I like them even better than automobiles I like the peaceful hum and the unequal rocking and the way everything looks from them after all if you like and I do like miniature anything and things streets or houses or trees or foliage made of wood or metal for children you naturally do like airplaning, it is completely that thing, it is that itself and what you see when you are looking.
