 March 9, 2013 • 28 Adar 5773 Fair Lawn Jewish Center Fair Lawn, NJ

Dear Honored Guests,

O

n behalf of the entire leadership of our school, I would like to welcome you to Ma’ayanot’s sixteenth annual dinner.

Our dinner campaign is dedicated to ensuring that every student at Ma’ayanot receives the best education possible. Our scholarship needs have increased substantially over the past several years to more than $1 million, about 20% of our annual operating budget. The goal of our dinner is to raise as much of these funds as possible, thereby ensuring that the educational and social needs of our students are met while keeping tuition costs as low as possible. B”H, I am pleased to report that we have raised $400,000 this year. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to each and every individual and family who have helped make this possible. As we approach the holiday of Pesach, the Z’man Hageulah, we recognize and appreciate that the underlying purpose of our salvation was our acceptance of the Torah on Har Sinai. The perpetuation of Torah is the key to the continuity of the Jewish people, and the Ma’ayanot family takes seriously its role in this process. Ma’ayanot students are well prepared for advanced Jewish and general studies at the finest Yeshivot in Israel and Universities in the US. Importantly, our graduates are recognized in the broader community as model citizens and wonderful representatives of our Torah community. Personally, and on behalf of the Board, I would like to wish mazal tov and offer appreciation and gratitude to our honorees: Benyamin and Esti Kaminetzky; Sara and Ira Olshin; Mrs. Gila Stein, and Coach Art Carpenter. These wonderful individuals devote their time and energy to making Ma’ayanot an institution that provides our daughters with the excellent education they deserve. Yashar Kochachem and thanks to all of you. I would like to thank the members of our journal committee, chaired again this year by Saul Kaszovitz, who worked tirelessly to generate another successful dinner campaign. In addition, this evening would not have been possible without the expertise of our Dinner Committee, chaired by Deena Kaszovitz. Thank you to the entire Committee for all your efforts in arranging a wonderful evening for all. In addition, a special thank you to Mrs. Rachel Feldman and to Mrs. Pam Ennis for all of their hard work. Lastly, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank our Principal, Mrs. Rivka Kahan, along with her entire administrative and educational staff for their dedication and efforts on behalf of our greatest treasures, our daughters. Kind regards, Menachem Schnaidman President

Esti & Benyamin Kaminetzky Keter Shem Tov Awardees

I

t is a distinct pleasure to present this year’s Keter Shem Tov Award to Esti and Benyamin Kaminetzky. Esti’s and Benyamin’s commitment and dedication to Maayanot’s mission, and to its continued growth and success, help ensure that our school remains as a center for academic excellence in both secular and Torah education. Benyamin has been a member of the Executive Board of Directors since 2007. His sage advice and counsel is frequently sought throughout a given school year. Esti has served as a member of the Education Committee, and has worked extensively in our recruitment efforts. Their oldest daughter, Rivka, a member of the Class of 2011, recently completed her shana bet studies at Migdal Oz and started her studies at Stern College. Their son Shai is a senior at MTA and their son Zvi is in the 10th grade at TABC. Their daughter Malka (Ma’ayanot Class of 2018) is in the 7th grade at SAR, and sons Ari and Yis are in 5th and 3rd grades at RYNJ. We are excited to recognize Esti and Benyamin for their loyalty and dedication to Ma’ayanot.

Sara & Ira Olshin Parents of the Year

T

he Ma’ayanot Parents of the Year Award is presented this evening to Sara and Ira Olshin. Sara’s and Ira’s devotion to Ma’ayanot over the past four years has greatly contributed to its success. Sara has worked tirelessly with the Adult Education Committee in establishing many series of shiurim given by our Ma’ayanot faculty for the community, and she also served on the Education Committee for two years. Their daughter Rachel is a member of the Class of 2013 and their son Meir is a 9th grader in the Sinai program at TABC. We are proud to honor Sara and Ira for their service to Ma’ayanot.

Gila Stein Teacher of the Year

T

his year’s Teacher of the Year Award is presented to Mrs. Gila Stein, our esteemed Science Chair. Mrs. Stein came to Ma’ayanot in 2004 and, since then, has vastly enriched our students’ science education by her scholarship, as well as her skill and clarity in the classroom. Mrs. Stein is a vital member of the Ma’ayanot faculty, teaching Chemistry, Physics, and AP Chemistry. She also strives to provide every student with a broad and deep knowledge of fundamental scientific principles through active, hands-on learning. At the same time, despite her busy schedule, she is still able to provide additional science help by conducting workshops for individuals or small groups during free periods. Her caring and concern for her students is what makes Mrs. Stein the perfect choice for Teacher of the Year.

Art Carpenter Ma’ayanot Service Awardee

I

t is a special privilege this year to present Mr. Art Carpenter with the Ma’ayanot Service Award. It is not often that a hockey coach can have such a significant impact on a school, especially when it is a girls’ yeshiva high school. Art has been defying all odds, though, ever since he arrived at Ma’ayanot in 2002. During his tenure as coach, he led the Ma’ayanot hockey team to nine championships, without suffering a defeat in the team’s last eight seasons. What really set Art apart, however, was the way he went about winning. He was unrivaled in his exemplary character and in the demeanor in which he led his players. They would play for him the way he led them — respectfully, and with great sportsmanship and grace. We are pleased to have this opportunity to express our deepest thanks for all his years of service in shaping and molding our girls both on and off the court.

Dear Friends,

T

he Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School annual dinner provides us with the opportunity to reflect upon and celebrate the achievements of our school, and to thank and acknowledge the dedicated lay leaders and educators who have made them possible.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, zekher tzaddik liverakha, shared a thought about Parshat Vayikra in his maamar Basi Legani, which may deepen our appreciation of the efforts and talents that tonight’s honorees have contributed to Ma’ayanot. Vayikra 1:2 introduces the halakhot of korbanot with the phrase “adam ki yakriv mikem korban laShem” (when a man offers from you a sacrifice to God). The Lubavitcher Rebbe pointed out an anomaly in the phrasing of this pasuk; it would seem more natural for the pasuk to read “adam mikem ki yakriv korban laShem” (when a man among you offers a sacrifice to God). He suggests that the unusual phrasing of this pasuk indicates a basic principle of avodat Hashem, which is that a gift to God must be brought “mikem” — from within you, from the heart of the individual. In other words, the pasuk does not simply introduce a series of halakhot, but describe the nature of gifts from man to God. The Lubavitcher Rebbe points out that while it seems impossible for man to develop a relationship to an infinite God, the pasuk indicates that “mikem uvakhem taluy hadavar” — the matter is dependent on the individual and upon the sincerity with which he approaches God. This concept relates not only to avodat Hashem in the realm of bein adam laMakom, but also to the multiple ways that people offer gifts to God. The sincere commitment and devotion of many people lie at the heart of any mekom Torah, including the mekom Torah that flourishes at Ma’ayanot. All of tonight’s honorees have contributed to Ma’ayanot in ways that reflect their own commitment to the concept of “mikem uvakhem taluy hadavar”— their understanding that the growth of our school is dependent on the sincere contributions of many individuals. As a school, we owe a great debt of gratitude to Esti and Benyamin Kaminetzky, Sara and Ira Olshin, Gila Stein, and Art Carpenter for their service and devotion to Ma’ayanot. It is our privilege to count such outstanding individuals among the leaders of our school, and to express our hakarat hatov to them tonight. Sincerely, Rivka Kahan Principal

Congratulations to Gila Stein on being honored as a devoted teacher and a skilled and supportive department chair. Your scholarship and pedagogy deeply enrich our students’ knowledge and appreciation of science. We have been gratified by the way that the science department has blossomed into an outstanding group of educators under your guidance. With gratitude and affection, Rivka Kahan, Tamar Appel and Elana Flaumenhaft

 Dear Gila, Mazel tov on this well-deserved honor! We feel privileged to have you as our Department Chair. You are a constant source of support and guidance to each one of us, both professionally and personally. You amaze us with your ability to teach with a mixture of patience and enthusiasm, exuding knowledge about each and every one of your five different classes. You have truly earned the respect and admiration of both your students and your colleagues. Thank you for being the backbone of our department and for consistently encouraging us to be the best teachers we can be. Esther, Ariella, Noam and Elise

 Mazel tov, Gila, on this well-deserved honor! As a faculty we have learned much by watching you interact with your students; you are demanding of high expectations yet you are patient, thoughtful, and kind. We are thrilled to participate in honoring you this evening! The Faculty

For Art, For all the practices and games For all the training and tips on how to improve For all the encouragement and guidance For all of these things and so much more.

Y

ou brought us all together, as hockey players, as teammates, as Rapids. Throughout the entire season, year after year, you were there to teach us, to help us improve, so that when we got out on the court, we reached our potential. You pushed us to play our best, to strive for more, to keep the energy up through all three periods. Even more than the skills we learned on the court, are the lessons you taught that we can take off the court. How to be a team player, the importance an assist is to the goal, good sportsmanship and so many other lessons are lessons we learnt from our hockey coach. Thank you for your years of dedication to the game, to the team and to all of us. The Ma’ayanot Rapids
