ART DECO ELEGANCE
ARCHITECT FOR A GLAMOROUS ERA
Inside the theatre, the silver-and-black décor, stylish angular sconces, backlit stained glass and elegantly carved Art Deco motifs are complemented by coral draperies and seat upholstery. As the curtain parts, the theatre works its magic, immersing the audience in an ambience of luxury and wonder.
S. Charles Lee (1899–1990) was the leading West Coast motion picture theatre architect of the 1930s and 1940s. He was posthumously honored with the Synergy Award, the highest recognition of the Society of American Registered Architects. The Department of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA established an endowed chair in his name.
ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET Memorable film premieres and exclusive local engagements include: The Marx Brothers’ Animal Crackers (1930), John Ford’s Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) with Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall, the first Donald Duck cartoon in Cinemascope (Grand Canyonscope, 1954), Walt Disney’s 70mm version of The Sleeping Beauty (1959), Exodus (1960), The Sound of Music (1965), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Man of La Mancha (1972), and most recently Academy Award Best Picture 12 Years a Slave (2013) and box office blockbuster Power Rangers (2017).
Lee introduced Art Deco and Streamline style to Los Angeles movie theatre design. BHPAC is proud to be working with the Los Angeles Conservancy in a shared pursuit of historic theatre preservation.
A TREASURED HERITAGE The theatre’s history is honored with an active membership in the League of Historic American Theatres, a nonprofit association promoting the rescue, rehabilitation and sustainable operation of historic theatres throughout North America.
