Even though this feels a little like admitting to a serious hoarding tendency, the china pantry, a.k.a. the party pantry, is quite possibly my favorite spot in the entire house. It’s honestly my dream come true: an unfussy, utilitarian space in which all that I could ever need for entertaining is stored. It’s onestop access for all my candles, crystal, china, linens, vases, baskets, trays, napkins, glassware, flatware, you name it. Most of the stuff is organized by set or color on open shelving or hanging racks, while flatware, place mats, and napkins are organized by sets in drawers, so I can see it all in one fell swoop and build a table just by walking in the room, picking and choosing elements as I go.

My thinking is that if you see it, you use it—we all know how things tucked away behind doors or in closets just end up collecting dust. Everything should have a place, and if it goes back in the same place, you always know where it is and when you need to repair it, replace it, or stock up. Running a house is pretty much about mastering supply-chain management. I’m fairly certain I was a great military logistician in a past life, because I’m very systemsoriented.

Quite simply, that kind of organization makes having people over for a party or dinner feel effortless. It’s also the secret to setting really inventive tables. You’re able to mix and match with abandon because you’re working with a full painter’s palette, so to speak. You’re also more likely to use finer objects, such as the wedding china you normally reserve for special occasions—a practice I’m not a big fan of. Why shouldn’t you drink your morning coffee or eat your oatmeal out of bone china? Don’t you deserve it? And honestly, when else are you going to use it? On the once-every-leap-year time you decide to host a formal breakfast? Who are we kidding? Using so-called special accessories in a regular way does two things: it honors precious items by employing them the way they were intended and elevates an experience that might otherwise feel banal— just try it with tomorrow’s coffee and see. It also makes for enchanting and surprising juxtapositions: I’ll readily mix something plainspoken like stoneware or charming majolica with painted porcelain. The highlow combination can be magical.

Just outside the pantry is a butler’s prep area connecting the kitchen on one side to the dining room on the other. It’s equipped with an ice maker, wine and drink fridges, and a deep sink. When I’m entertaining formally, I’ll block off the view to the hallway from the dining room with a folding screen. But whenever it’s a really large group, like at the holidays, it becomes the buffet area where I set out serving dishes so people can come and go at their own pace. The walls are covered in a blue-andwhite wallpaper that matches the portieres I can draw shut to close off the china pantry—who wants to fuss with doors when you’re walking in and out with glassware and china? The color palette helps to bridge the dining room and kitchen and feels cohesive with the china pantry.

When the kids are all home and we’re having dinner, setting the table is one of their chosen tasks. I always tell them there are no rules to it, and it’s brilliant because I can hear them in the china pantry going “Hmm,” as they mull over different combinations, matching their choices to whatever we’re eating, the time of year, or the way they feel. Suddenly a simple, normally throwaway act— setting the table for supper— becomes something more. A cabbage-leaf bowl or a transferware plate transforms into a vehicle for creativity, for being present, for being together, for joy. And bingo! That’s what good design can do.

Touted as South Florida’s most luxurious boat show, last year’s show had over 55,000 visitors and generated over $1B for the state of Florida through boat sales, and travel/ entertainment expenditures from attendees. “The Palm Beach International Boat Show has shown time and time again what makes West Palm Beach a special and unique destination for the global boating and yachting community,” according to West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James.

A Show with Heart and Soul.

Passionate about our ecosystem, the show is committed to sustainability by pursuing their goal of becoming carbon neutral through a partnership with Yacht Carbon Offset as well as sustainable catering. The food served is fresh farm to plate fruits and vegetables, sustainable seafood, and natural organic meats.

A focus is placed on partnering with purveyors to use locally-sourced, organic, and sustainable products. Their “No Styrofoam” Policy prohibits the use of Styrofoam packaging or service ware, which they replaced with fully compostable alternatives, and they have donated 3,125 pounds worth of food and ingredients (equivalent to $15,635) to the homeless shelters in partnership with Faith Farms.

Last year, the show helped Loggerhead Marine Life Center with a major challenge. Due to renovations, the center needed somewhere to put the tanks with the turtles. So, the show’s tech and transport teams volunteered to move the two truckloads of tents and build them at Loggerhead. Show producers share, “Our US boat shows have been supporting local communities in various ways for years, this project felt particularly close to our hearts because we all love the ocean and its ecosystem – it’s one of the reasons we’re in the business we’re in.”

This is Mike’s favorite show for several reasons. He shares, “They have over a 1,000 boats and everything is in one place. She is the second largest show in the world - second only to the Ft Lauderdale show. Parking and tickets cost less and we have some of the best restaurants within walking distance or a short drive across the bridge. All the manufacturers from around the world will be there and you can see everything form a 20ft center console to a 200ft mega yacht. The bigger ones will be available just up the road at Rybovich South.”

Leaving a Legacy

For the past 30 years, Regina Bedoya has been focused on providing her clients financial peace of mind. As the oldest of nine children, I got the call first. My father, who recently celebrated his 97th birthday, needed help creating a list assigning his personal belongings to each of his children. He knew that his real estate and financial assets would be distributed in equal shares, but there were other things, many charged with sentimental value, that would need to be passed on to one of his children - but to which one?

My father’s request began a process of listing items – the furniture, the China set, the crystal, jewelry, even his extensive library of medical and scientific books he had collected over a 70-year career in medicine. He decided to ask each one of us what we wanted from that list. And while this process ended up taking longer than he would have liked – the nine of us live in three different continents – it finally got done. I could sense a profound relief in my father after this process was over. He had a strong desire that, after his death, his children would remain close and conflict free: a lofty but attainable goal.

Because of this personal experience, I began raising with my clients even more often the importance of having a Legacy Plan in place. While it’s not an enjoyable task to prepare for our inevitable passing, it helps to know that this process allows us to be the decision makers.

So, how do we get started? For some of us, the work might already be done. We have completed our estate plan, we are constantly reducing clutter and keeping our belongings in good order, we have prepared a list of bequests, and we may even have planned our funeral. For others, it may be part of a to-do list, along with other important but not urgent items. Deciding how you want to put together your Legacy Plan is the first step. Some of these decisions are easier than others, but they must all be addressed sooner or later. A meeting with your trusted advisor can help you navigate the many decisions that must be made. Once you are clear on what you want, meeting with your legal professional is next. They can then translate your intentions into legal documents.

Going through this arduous but very important process allows us to ensure that our wishes will be carried out and our assets will be properly distributed after our passing. In many states, without the proper documents in place, an unintended distribution of assets can be ordered by a probate court. Not having a financial power of attorney prevents us from assigning the right person to act on our behalf when we cannot do so ourselves. Unless we periodically review our beneficiary designations, especially for those investments that bypass the will, we might end up leaving assets to the wrong parties.

Having served clients for almost 30 years, I understand the challenges of creating a Legacy Plan that not only covers the necessary legal documents but that also honors the core values and family traditions we seek to pass on to our loved ones. Over the years, I have heard countless stories from clients who reminisce and reflect on what their parents meant to them. In most cases, there is a deep appreciation for the monetary and emotional legacy they received from them.

As my dad approaches the evening of his life, I, too, feel an immense gratitude for all the ways he showed us his love, including his decision to plan for the inevitable in a mature and compassionate way.

Approximately $225,000 of that has been donated by the North Palm Beach Chapter, which is only five years young. After putting together an amazing group of philanthropic women whose mission was to give back to their community, Melody Spano, the Founder of 100+Women Who Care -South Florida and her committee, launched the first Florida Chapter meeting in November 2012, with just 30 women!

In five years, 100+Women Who Care-South FL increased membership to approximately 500 women and five chapters: Miami Beach, Broward, South Palm Beach County, North Palm Beach County and Jupiter/Tequesta There were fewer than 50 chapters nationally when South FL launched and today, there are now over 700 chapters worldwide!

The premise is simple: Each 100+Women Who Care chapter meets quarterly and its members vote on a sponsored charity of choice who then becomes the recipient of a grant (typically $10,000-$15,000) of which 100% goes to that selected charity. Collectively, the South Florida 100+WomenWhoCare Chapters currently raise about $200,000 per year for local, mostly underfunded, non-profits. Melody Spano is the Director of the North Palm Beach Chapter, and each chapter is now run by its own Chapter Director with wonderful supporting volunteer committees.

The South Florida markets we cover continue to experience rising prices as listing inventory remains in short supply. Sales levels are below levels seen in the 2021 housing boom from limited supply and higher mortgage rates. Year over year comparisons have been temporarily distorted by the extreme conditions of the pandemic housing boom in late 2020 and 2021. Temporarily, comparisons against pre-pandemic conditions have been relied on to provide a more accurate context.

Result highlights include:

• Price trends continued to rise despite higher mortgage rates, mainly from chronic listing inventory shortages, resulting in prices that remain sharply higher than pre-pandemic conditions.

• Sales are down from the year-ago sales boom and are generally below pre-pandemic levels.

• Listing inventory has been expanding slowly but remains significantly less than pre-pandemic levels.

• The pace of the market has cooled from the year-ago frenzy, but it is still moving faster than pre-pandemic levels.
