I am now in a position to create time to return back to my original roots of art and creativity. Through my training in creative therapies I discovered a way to reconnect back to my art through unconscious and therapeutic processes.

‌.Creativity is therapy

THE ART OF PSYCHOLOGY

 I am not an Art therapist but have trained to incorporates creative tools into the therapy room.  I use creativity with clients and for myelf as a way to connect with the unconscious that lies beneath the ‘word’ in order to bring into awareness and reach catharsis of unconscious emotion.  I use Creativity and Psychology with my clients and myself to balance the rigid left brain cognition and the chaotic right brain expression in order to feel a sense of safety, flow and fluidity. Both Art and Therapy…...  Encourages the acceptance of pain, angst, anger, guilt and fear as well as joy, excitement, happiness, calm, and peace as part of the ‘self’ as a whole.  facilitates a place of vulnerability in order to become stronger.  Is an unknown journey, constantly changing and readjusting to facilitate change.  Concerns relating with another.

How do you know which therapy is the best for you? Your GP will initially refer you to CBT, not because it is necessarily the right thing for you but because it is easy to prove as the most cost-effective due to it’s focused nature. Many people have never had to reflect on their mental health until a particular issue appears and so the act of doing so can be sufficient for creating change.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY Maladaptive thought patters and core beliefs It can be used for less complex issues such as anxiety, depression, phobias, addictions and other targeted issues. However if you have already done a lot of self-help, believe you have good reflective capacity, and are aware your issues are more deep rooted or complex, then CBT may not be sufficient for long term change. All talking therapy starts from a place of confidentiality, safety, and boundary setting in order to create effective change with your issues. Three fundamental principles created by Carl Rogers enable a therapeutic relationship to be formed.

Empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard and Congruence

PERSON-CENTERED THERAPY In it’s purest form the aim of PCT is empowerment through emotional expression and self-direction in the here and now. It is also helpful for talking through significant life events and also for exploring a lost sense of self or direction, personal growth and emotional detachment. Sessions continue until the client feels confident in coping alone for themselves.

If you are aware of more deeper routed, historical or more complex issues then you may need a psychotherapeutic approach. This may take longer because it needs a much more sensitive and slow paced approach in understanding and breaking down defence mechanisms before being able to affect any therapeutic change.

PSYCHODYNAMIC/PSYCHOTHERAPY This focuses on unconscious processes and defence mechanisms, past experiences and relational experiences through counter/transference's. It can be used for relational and personality issues, past traumas, abuse and neglect, attachment issues, and complex issues.

As a Counselling Psychologist I have an honours degree in Psychology and I am trained in Person-centred Psychodynamic, and CBT theories. I also practice and apply Mindfulness regularly. Whilst I am not a specialist in any particular one it allows me to adapt to the complexity of each individual clients needs. My particular style incorporates elements of each of them. In particular...  To engage with the Here and Now to enable a catharsis of emotions in order for them to lose their power over you.  Reflecting back on past experiences to understand how you have come to this point now.  To challenge old, and possibly other peoples narratives and reconstruct new narratives that come from and work better for you.  Reflecting on the dynamics of our relationship in order to help understand relational issues. In order to create effective change expect clients to attend regular weekly sessions of 50 minutes until they feel empowered to go it alone.

Therapy can be a terrifying prospect for many clients and rightly so.

It is not an easy journey and the sunshine does not always come quickly. It may take you to places that are painful, dark, hopeless, and despairing. It can seem grey and bleak for some of the time and feel as though your are going backwards not forwards. But if you can find the courage to face this darkness then there is hope that from it you will find a spectrum of colourful emotions, of joy, hope, happiness, laughter, sadness, guilt, love, excitement, jealousy........

a rainbow of emotions where the sun and the clouds can exist together in a place where life seems more prosperous and fulfilling.

ART Painting in acrylics is my favoured form of creative expression; the feel of the brush on canvas and subtle mixing of colours and intensities. I experiment with other mediums but from a base of acrylics. My art has been reignited in recent years through my work as a Psychologist, working a balance between left and right brain processing. It has also been a direct expression of my own experiences and processing of internal self through therapy.

WRITING Creative writing is an antidote for me from the cognitive processing demands of formal writing regulations. It comes from unconscious dreams, meditations and from rhythms felt within rather than semantic sense making.

PHOTOGRAPHY I am traditionally trained in film cameras and development. Having a difficult relationship with words, photography is now a quick means to capture the world in the visual ways that I understand it from. I rely on sense, shape and colour over words and like to capture these forms that present themselves to me through mindful observation of the world around me
