ROMÉO ET JULIETTE February 7 – 15, 2014 Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Music by Sergei Prokofiev Live with Atlanta Ballet Orchestra
All the way from Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, this Southeast premiere of the alluring, ethereal production of Roméo et Juliette redefines the classic love story of the two star-crossed lovers of Verona. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, Roméo et Juliette will take you on an emotional, cinematic journey that will leave you quivering in anticipation and breathless. “Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s shiveringly beautiful score… the dance unfolds as a series of chases, of catches, of rapture as one young body discovers another, and one pair of eyes beholds what it didn’t know it had always looked for.” – The Seattle Times
MODERN CHOREOGRAPHIC VOICES featuring Ohad Naharin, Alexei Ratmansky & Jorma Elo
March 21 – 23, 2014 Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre
Modern Choreographic Voices presents the works of some of today’s most sought-after contemporary choreographers. Ohad Naharin is back this season with the Atlanta Ballet premiere of the incendiary Secus after electrifying audiences last year with Minus 16. From Alexei Ratmansky, the current artist in residence at American Ballet Theatre and former artistic director of the legendary Bolshoi Ballet, Atlanta Ballet presents the hypnotic Seven Sonatas. Jorma Elo’s futuristic 1st Flash returns this season after its Atlanta debut in 2012. As the name suggests, the choreography astonishes with speed and athleticism and clearly demonstrates why The New York Times’ “Year in Review” named Elo a “talent to follow.” *Contains nudity. A
tlanta Ballet remains at the forefront of contemporary dance by commissioning cutting-edge new works that push boundaries. Atlanta Ballet will close its 2013|14 season with an exciting May program featuring two world premieres by two women choreographers.
Helen Pickett is one of the most in-demand contemporary choreographers, creating new works for world-renowned dance companies. In 2007, Dance Magazine marked Helen as one of “25 to Watch,” and Atlanta Ballet named her its new choreographer in residence in 2012. Pickett’s choreography creates connections between the dancers and audience that are palpable. The senses ignite, thus uniting the performers and viewers on a shared physical and emotional journey. “The dance is exotic, full of ephemeral secrets, pulsating. The dynamics through the speed made the movement strong and edgy, and at the same time elegant and filled with breathless, soulful eroticism.” - Die Presse (Vienna, Austria)
T
ara Lee returns with a world premiere after awing audiences with 2012’s Pavo. Lee, also an accomplished dancer entering her eighteenth season with Atlanta Ballet, has proven that she is a multi-dimensional and distinctive emerging choreographer. “Lee allowed each dancer’s personality to color the movement, giving the audience the sense that we were watching real lives through a window. The musicality of this piece and the carefully crafted lifts were noteworthy.” – The Backstage Beat
