PORTFOLIO Juliette KARABETIAN ARCHITECT
1
2
This portfolio shows the work I have done for the past six years in the field of architecture. It includes projects designed at the university and during professional experiences in France and abroad. The latter is enriched by a work of artistic expression with the presentation of drawings, models and photographs. The goal is to show my interest in international projects, my curiosity for various cultures as well as artistic interdisciplinarity. 3
4
ABOUT Curious and passionate, I have traveled across continents throughout my studies, which has allowed me to open my horizons on an international level and therefore enrich my creativity and improve my adaptability to culture, population, heritage and urban planning of the countries I visited. My project experiences abroad have been intensive over a short period of time. As a result, my ability to design and produce effectively in a given time have strengthens. My exposure to the many artistic domains of drawing, photography and music, which I also practiced during my travels around the world, has greatly improved my architectural culture. All these areas are related to human contact which allows me today to be able to practice fluently three languages (French, English, Spanish).

CASTALLA REHABILITATION

Urban and architectural graduation project Castalla, Spain This is a project that I worked on and developed throughout my Erasmus year in Valencia. That year, I did various projects in the city of Castalla. After visiting the site several times, I noticed that it was an integral part of an industrial zone producing toys and office furniture. There are 15 provinces in Spain producing toys from international and local firms.
CASTALLA, A NEGLECTED CITY Over the years with urban sprawl it has lost its dynamism. Indeed, people are gradually leaving the heart of the city to live in the suburbs. The labor force travels to work outside of the city on a daily basis, leading to a lack of activity in the area.
CASTALLA CHALLENGES The industrial zone: How to make these people want to settle there again ? Inhabitants: Travel only in the city center to school shops or equipment. Two types of populations: retirees and families with young children. Travel out of Castalla to get to the workplace. How to reconnect to the rest of the city? Landscaping factor: Castalla benefits from sports tourism. Tourists are attracted by its cycle and pedestrian routes along the mountain as well as its castle at the top, and the panorama of the surrounding landscape. This path to the castle is also part of the cultural link connecting the historic center to the mountain. Tourists end their journey at the castle. These areas are abandoned on the other side of the valley. How to increase the areas of interest so that tourists are also interested in the northern side of the city ?

Community project with the inhabitants of Pleyel district, Saint-Denis Imagine Pleyel was imagined by our team when we worked on the Carrefour Pleyel area in Saint-Denis. The ultimate goal was to design a user-friendly space in relation to the residents of the district. The project program emerged from the needs of the users themselves. We created several events to meet with them and learn more about the type of space they imagined, and the different uses needed. Project proposal: PLEY-MOBILE • Building of a “mobile toolbox” that can contain and support various activities around the Pleyel neighborhood to strengthen ties between residents and neighborhood users. • Activities divided into three groups (gardening, creative, mental sport). • Activities conducted at different locations in Pleyel according to a schedule that each association could check to see the boxes availability. • Structure stored safely thanks to the partnership with the Lili Boulanger school.

GREEN CLOUD 42
International Workshop with students from Nagoya (Japan) and from China Temporary Belvedere This is a temporary belvedere project supporting the transformation of the “Paris Bruneseau” site. This comes as an extension of a public space that takes the form of an element crossing the street. The project takes the opposite stance of a context developed around the automobile and suggests a way to cross the road like a promenade.
A modular Algeco structure Structure used on construction sites, this modular system allows different types of layout with a simple structure, facilitating the assembly of the blocks.
Goals • Visible from far and attractive • Information about events around the neighborhood • Integration in the environment • Link between spaces, accessible in different places • Mix industrial vocabulary with nature in order to give a more relaxing atmosphere • Recycle containers, easy to assemble and disassemble • Link the suburbs (Ivry) to Paris • Simultaneous development of the site => modularity of the structure • Different uses (garden, cafeteria, exhibition spaces, urban landscape observation area) • Pedestrian walk in the opposite direction of traffic

WINDOW DISPLAY AND FANTASY

“Window display: Imagination in the service of luxury” Drawings from the Master dissertation – Scenography seminar For a year and a half, I analyzed the scenography of store windows and their relationship to the imagination. The drawings below are part of my case study inspired by the 57 Hermès store windows by scenographers Leila Menchari and Antoine Platteau.

Store window “Under the orange trees”, Fall 2003
Annual theme «The Mediterranean»
L’artisanat ici est mis en avant avec des arcades sculptées à la main par des artisans tunisiens. In reference to her Mediterranean origins, Leïla Menchari declines in this theme many memories of her childhood’s vestiges and landscapes, including those of Tunisia. Craftsmanship here is highlighted with hand carved arches by Tunisian artisans.

Patience and length of time, Fall 2015
Between a play on scales and humor, Antoine Platteau develops a monochrome, unadorned staging, where structure and shop are apparent. He will use the theme of “store windows in full renovation” to stage objects in a painting site, with brushes and knives with leather sleeves, while keeping the poetry of the story. SET DESIGN
Les Bonnes, Jean Genet Set design adaptation of the play Les Bonnes by Jean Genet at the Théâtre de la Colline, Scène Nationale Work model - Stage Design Seminar
After reading the play, with my team we put together a set of words that made us think of the personality of the characters, the story’s atmosphere and the colors or smells that we could imagine. From these words, we staged the three characters in different costume using different fabrics showing their different social status. Sober and contemporary graphic design, the emphasis is on the fabric’s scenography.

Symbols: Anguish and guilt with the water leaking through the vases, suspended above the actors and spectators. Feminine omnipresence, sensuality and desire with red and silk. Set of hanging curtains to show the space of the bedroom. Overloaded world, like the egocentric and megalomaniac main character.

COMPETITION
Nuit Blanche de Paris 2016 (Art/Design Exhibition by night) Installation Sliding puzzle France-Korea – Crossing Theme Collaboration with former students of Ecole Boulle, Marine Pozzo Di Borgo, Naomi Dessouliers and Korean photographer Hyeoncheol Hwang
Concept
The crossing
The concept takes another look at the «sliding puzzle» game: the puzzle consist of small square boxes that can move orthogonally through one or more empty boxes, in order to rebuild the original image. The spectator should interact with the work while crossing the puzzle.
The pallet block is like a dividing line in that it is an obstacle that would hinder a continuous walk. The puzzle perched on this platform, materializes the act of crossing.
The idea was to create a fun installation where people could interact with it and allow group participation.
This crossing can be thought of as a single or repetitive module along the way with different sizes or not. With the accumulation of pallets, the creation is infinite; The same module can be used for various stages.
The players must first cross part of the pedestal to access the puzzle. Once there, they will have to overcome the enigma imposed to continue their course.
Installation Each module is made of a photo representing the traditional portrait of a Korean. These images are provided with a grid, representing the different pieces of the puzzle. There will be several empty spaces to facilitate the participation of several players at the same time. By sliding the boxes, the pieces of the image are mixed, creating a new face. This image is therefore flexible and gives everyone the possibility of creating their own.

Walk in Paris Since my training at École Boulle, I have always been attracted by the world of design and more specifically, that of the object. Each free moment is an opportunity for me to express my vision of these everyday objects in various situations. The living model and the study of the human skeleton is a way for me to better understand the human body functions and proportions. Thus, this vision of the body allows me to design projects more adapted to the human movements in different spaces.
