DANCE in TRANSLATION Appearances and Essences Andy Stoane & Ana Bonet Miro
Juliette Sung s1215121
UNIT BRIEF Through the development of a range of architectural-scale propositions in an urban-scale territory we will re-think the dialogue between Appearance and Essence, questioning the complex relationship between tectonics, architectural form and their combined place in the public realm. The propositions will be programmatically diverse but will cohere around the idea of public ‘theatricality’, taking a position in a Landscape of Public Theatre which we will collectively orchestrate. The propositions might range from radical performance art to the social performance of individuals in diverse forms of public space, from the pub to the city square to the debating chamber. The landscape will acknowledge and mediate the programmatic flux and broad temporal spectrums which exist in the public city.

KINGS STABLE ROAD
Edinburgh The main public space and buildings are surrounded along the main road, stretching from Princes street towards the Grassmarket. However, King’s stable road and King’s stable lane locating in between the Princes Gardens and Grassmarket are generally quiet and unnoticed. The King’s stable lane is only 5 metres wide, while leaving a short cut directing from Grassmarket towards the Princes Street.

Attractors and Repellers Public realm is always generated by having attracting features, like green space, entertainments or having historical value. Despite there are lots of attractors along the main road in Edinburgh, the king’s stable road is unexpectedly quiet and most of the buildings are shutted down.
King’s stable road Different street use is found on this road. There are commercial, residential and entertainment land use, Also, different architectural styles are seen on those buildings along the road.
The road and the lane The relationship between the King’s stable land and the King’s stable road is really interesting. The contrast between these two public realm is obvious that the scale, the environment, as well as the landscape is different.
The Big Warehouse This existing warehouse was there for industrial use and the columns with trusses are remained. The neighbourhood of this warehouse is interesting as there is an existing courtyard which is being shared by the residential, workshops and office.
The Trusses As to remain some of the historical value of the warehouse, I decided to maintain the trusses for my proposal. They can serve in both aesthetic and structural ways.
Extending the tectonic limit Edinburgh is a city with a rich historical values. Conservation towards the existing architecture is always carelly considered in Edinburgh. But as the time goes by, the technology is getting more advanced nowadays. I think introducing new kind of architecture can enrich and enlighten the public realm in an old beautiful city.
OBSERVATION
Pedestrain road and Main road They give you a different atmosphere and environment. You may find that pedestrain road is more appealling to public due to its quieter and bigger space for public, while the main road is usually busier and narrower, but more efficient.

Choreography of Public Realm Public realm can be varied in Pedestrian and Main road, so why can’t public realm be compared in scales? Scales can be considered as the comparison between the scale of street to the scale of a small architectural component, a table. By marking out their movement in time and scales, an interesting study is araised, can public realm be compared with its different movement, different choreography?
PROPOSAL
The Tectonics of WINDOW Windows are not just normal frame that bring light into the interior space, but they are also the connecting devices between the private and public realm. People from private space can visually interact with the people in the public realm, they are static but always functioning.

MEDIATED WINDOW
The translation from choreography to architecture
New Window WIndows are no longer can just be seen as realtime visual connection, but also a mediated form of visual connection. With the advanced development of the technology, architectural component, i.e. window, can also be performative, while still maintining the visual connection.
Choreographical facade The movement of the dancers can be detected and translated the movement into the open and close of the aperture, while the movement is sensed with a infra-red sensor. Therefore, the choreography of the dancers can be directly shown on the facade, remaining the feature of the window.

USES OF EXISTING TRUSSES 1. space ABOVE 2. space BELOW 3. space WITHIN To maintain the columns and trusses of the existing warehouse, I decided to extend the length of it and introduce new kinds of space to the users.
URBAN IMPACT Facing towards the King’s Stable Road and the Edinburgh Castle, the new window has its best position towards the public realm. Since the existing location, King’s Stable Lane is unnoticed and quiet, while it is actually a great space to sight see the Edinburgh Castle. These new windows can effectively attract public attention and lighten up the public realm.
DESIGN STRATEGY With the compartively high- rising buildings behind the site, as well as locating in between the Land and Road, the new design should be able to connect the back and the front, as well as keeping the maximum surface area towards to the road, with the maximum number of apertures.

NEIGHBOURHOOD With the shared site with neighbours, new opportunities of interrelationships can be introduced, while maintaining the function of the new window. DANCING STUDIO Studios for dancers need to be spatious and mirrorprovided. Dance is influenced by dual senses, both architectural material and mutrual individuals. Their choreography is therefore then main component of the whole building, despite inspiring the others, as well as to the public realm.

THE PIANO SHOWROOM A showroom of piano is being introduced to the dancing studio, which is a connection between my dancing studio to the piano workshop next door. Piano is a musical instrument, which provides a great opportunity to dancing, apart from the architecture itself that inspire dancers, the music does too.
