Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture

UNIT BRIEF Any Place will be oriented towards the production of architecture that simultaneously engages with both the individual experience and the milieu of society at large. Therefore, Architectural Design will initially be approached as an instrument of mediation between the scale of the individual and the scale of collective culture. It is therefore expected that the architectural qualities developed throughout the initial processes of design exploration will directly inform the student responses to the specific conditions of the Madrid site. Moreover, it is also expected that they will simultaneously articulate an intellectual dialogue that engages with pressing questions within the contemporary architectural discipline.

THE INTERVIEW

BEYOND BOOKS

NICE AND QUIET

MEDIUM CLASS FAMILY

“Combining library and cafeteria can help. We are building more and more new residential housing in this area so maybe a funky or modern place with a Wi-Fi could work. Also, as we are near the train station, the high traffic flow to and from the area can be beneficial to the project.”

“We are in the centre of Madrid, this area is being refurbished, nice and quiet. During the night, we don’t hear anything. There are a few bars and a pub nearby here but even the bars close early.”

“The 80s and 90s were more to working class but right now its medium class area and again because it is near to the city center. This area is mainly residential but there must be some private schools here.”

“ On sunday morning, I walked straight to the reception and returned my books. Afterwards, I went to get a latte from the cafe which is just sitting next to the reception. The sunshine was warm and bright, so I brought my favorite magazine with me to the courtyard. I sat under the tree and spent an hour to relax myself there. After the coffee, I felt like reading a book and I went up to the first floor for the book search. While finding my book, I looked up and saw my old friend sitting down on the second floor! I felt so excited and I went upstair through the outdoor linking platform. It was so surprising to meet her there and we ended up having a lunch in the rooftop restaurant.

- BEYOND THE SILENCE

Sitting in the central of Madrid and enjoying the nice Mediterranean climate, this library is also a great communal space for socializing, cultural exchange and relaxing.

THE VERTICAL PULL The books well and the restaurant are located on the top of the library. They are offering different destinations for the user, while allowing them to explore throughout the library.

IN vs OUT The facade will be made of plain white concrete panels, which will be able to capture the shadows of the life. For example, the movement of the people and acting as a background for the market stalls. In contrast, the inside is full of different gradients and openings, acting like a mountain. The contrast of the exterior will also enhance the excitement of the experience.

THE GALLERY The double height gallery maintain its spatial quality while eye- contacting towards the entrance and the ourdoor platform. The openings ligtened up the interior space and refreshed people’ mind.

THE PLAYGROUND Children area is always full of laughters and joy. The airy atmosphere with the large openings offer them much freedom to learn and play. They have their own entrance with own courtyard.
