✴ Minnie Driver moved to tears ....by a photograph Who Do You Think You Are ? BBC / Mirror write up
Often the most moving and interesting episodes of this series of who do you think you are? are the ones that don’t go back very far at all. That’s because it’s much easier to care about someone you actually knew than some great-great ancestor from way back in the distant 1800s – even if they did live in a ditch. And in the case of actress and singer Minnie Driver, just finding out about her own father is more than mystery enough because he never talked about his past to her or even to her mother. Why that should be the case is enough to spark Minnie’s curiosity. Quite by chance, a friend found mention of him in a book about the Second World War. In her search, Minnie learns that Ronnie Driver had been in the RAF and took part in the battle of Heligoland Bight – the first great air battle of the war and one that ended in a shocking defeat for Britain. The extraordinary tale that Minnie gradually uncovers reads, she says, like a movie script. And for once she’s not exaggerating. Because it’s not her father’s heroism in battle that makes his story so poignant, but what happened afterwards. But there are plenty more surprises tucked away in Ronnie’s family tree, including an uncle who found local fame as “the man with the funny laugh”. Seeing a photograph of her father in the local paper with his mother – a woman Minnie has never met or even seen a picture of – is another revelation that moves her to tears.
