Location
Berzaunes Street, Unijas Street, Brivibas Street and Ieriku Street, Riga Riga Technical University faculty of Architecture and Urban planning Diploma project
The territory between Berzaunes Street, Unijas Street, Brivibas Street and Ieriku Street in Riga, Latvia (henceforth “VEF territory”) where the former State Electro-Technical Factory was located during the Soviet is located nearly in the center of Riga, is near several major traffic circuits and has the potential to become a center of business and culture. Today VEF territory is one of the most vivid examples of 19th/20th century industrial architecture in Latvia, because little changes have been made to the original facades over the years. Meanwhile, many of the old factory buildings businesses are starting up and office spaces in the premises are being created and rented out. Roughly one fifth of the territory is also occupied by Domina supermarket since 2004, while no distinct business area prevails in the residual area. Meanwhile the old factory now lives in preserved stories and legends. This project aim is to create an Art and Communication center “VEF” as a public place that provides a wide range of transformable studio-based installations and conference spaces - both indoors and outdoors - where artists, visitors and art promoters can network and solve exceptional design challenges together. It is located at the central part of a former factory territory, previously was called 19.case The vision of this project is to create a multi-functional organism operating as the heart connecting all the parts of VEF district already developed, becoming unique laboratory to experiment with and construct new formulas cutting across disciplines Creation of an ideological and spatial center for this former industrial territory could help to unify all 52 owners of this place in process of developing and transforming it to unique city site.

TRANSFORMATION OF FORMER INDUSTRIAL COMPLEXES INTO CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL ENVIRONMENTS 02 Year
2013 Riga Technical University faculty of Architecture and Urban planning Master of Engineering Sciences in Architecture Master thesis
Masterwork is a systematically compiled research about the ecological, social and economical aspects of the transformation of historical industrial complexes in the contemporary cultural context. In the circumstances where the degradation processes of the historical industrial territories continue to take place in the cities, the question about their effective and sustainable use becomes of a special importance. It is concerned with the evaluation possibilities of the effective use of the city space, which would improve its quality and would make it more attractive for its inhabitants and visitors. The transformational aspects of the historical industrial complexes examined in the masterwork and their interaction with the contemporary cultural processes gives a possibility to make prognosis about their future development as well as to analyze possibly more successful development tendencies which include the adjustment of these complexes to the present cultural activities and considering the social interests. In the scope of this masterwork the research of historical development of the topic, the analysis of the present problematics as well as the evaluation of the social interest in frames of the public inquiry, which lets to predict the demand of the regenerated industrial complexes and its viability in contemporary context were applied. The aim of the competition was to design a Cēsis Space Exploration Center which would provide entertainment possibility for 100 000 people annually. The task was to divide the project in three separate phases. The project abstract and philosophical metaphor is creating a building as “Space Sailor” that landed on planet Earth offering cultural and science development for its visitors. Building volumes are embedded in 5 meter linear network. The module is suitable for a variety of functional zoning, it determines the rhythm of the facades and make possible changes and expansions in the future. The design scheme is chosen to be easily implemented, the technologies and materials used are available. The use of recycled, standardized (properly certified) materials provides a high level of construction quality, convenient and quick construction. Such a construction approach has no obvious drawbacks in the short term, in the long run, on the contrary - it involves ethical attitudes towards the construction process and is responsible. Center must demonstrate world-wide latest, economically feasible energy-efficient technologies in both the building's shell and engineering systems. The goal of the project is to achieve the highest passive buildings with zero carbon dioxide emissions meanwhile providing for visitors presentation of energy efficient processes and systems, as well as Project solutions are based on the principles of the energy pyramid "MEAN-LEAN-GREEN" - to optimize the energy consumption of the building.
