GILL SANS JULIO SANCHEZ
Created it in 1928
Inspired by the corporate font of London Underground, created by Edward Johnston
With the purpose of competing with German geometric sans-serif fonts like Futura.
Gill’s idea was to create a sans-serif font inspired in the roman fonts, so that it looked modern and classic at the same time.
The main purpose of this font was to be used as a display font for posters and advertisements.
The font was very successful in England, and it remains very successful, such is it’s fame that it is now known as the “English Helvetica”.
The font’s upper case letters are inspired by the Roman tradition, while the lower case are inspired by traditional Sans-serif fonts
Gill Sans has several versions that go from Light to Ultra Bold, passing through some obliques.
