Letter from the Editor I remembered watching 'Dope' for the first time and seeing Namjoon appeared on the screen, smiling with his cute dimples out. The part that struck me the most about this music video is what Namjoon said in Korean. "Welcome, first time to BTS?" At that moment, I just knew that I had to become a fan. BTS has broken language barriers and bought fans all over the world together through their powerful messages and music. BTSÂ has shown us reasons to love ourselves and has changed the lives of many ARMYs. If this is your first time with BTS, this magazine will be a helpful guide to introduce you to the members (on page 5). For those of you have been fans for a long time, this magazine will serve as a beautiful reminder of how far BTS has come and how much they love us and how much we love them. This magazine is dedicated to BTS for all their hard work and love, and for ARMYs, who support and love BTS. Together, we are a powerful family.

What are the critics saying? Wings (2016) "Issued in late 2016, Wings pushed the creative maturation for the K-pop septet while maintaining the unique spirit that had so endeared them to fans looking for more than the typical K-pop industry product. In addition to a handful of requisite hits that deftly captured the contemporary pop zeitgeist, Wings allowed BTS to delve deeper into more serious topics (such as mental health, non-conformity, and female empowerment) and artistic expressions." - AllMusic, Neil Z. Yeung

Love Yourself: Tear (2018) Rating: 8/10 - Spin "On “Singularity,” the album’s introduction, singer V slinks in with a quiet confidence that sets the tone for the rest of the record. His rich, expressive voice blooms and lingers, like the smoke rising from a candle after it goes out." - Blanca Mendez, Spin

Love Yourself: Answer (2018) Rating: 9/10- Clash Magazine "In an uplifting finale to the series comes the title-flipping 'Answer: Love Myself', which closes out the series with a positive message of self-love. Impactful, and with poetic lyrics, the track is the perfect end - and fittingly the perfect answer - to the exploratory nature of the Love Yourself series." Malvika Padin, Clash Magazine

What are the Critics saying?

Map of the Soul: Persona (2019) Rating: 9.5/10- The Line of Best Fit "Throughout the mini-album are references to BTS’ past and reflections on their growth as artists and individuals. “Intro: Persona” begins with a parallel to 2014’s “Intro: Skool Love Affair” – a much beloved but critiqued era in BTS’ history for their own thoughtful ARMYs." "This theme, too, runs throughout Map of the Soul: Persona – songs like “Mikrokosmos” and “HOME” focus on the mutual love and support between BTS and their ARMY." - Sophia SimonBashall, The Line of Best Fit

BTS's achievements throughout the years

From an unknown K-Pop group from a small company to international superstars: BTS are the definition of the ultimate success story. 38

"Teamwork makes the dream work." | BTS's achievements throughout the years.

BTS had a humble beginning as they started from a small company. Throughout their careers, BTS and ARMYs faced hardships, but together they got through it all and came out stronger. This feature is dedicated to the achievements (excluding nominations) BTS received throughout their careers and to the ARMYs who supported them on their journey. With the support and love of ARMYs and BTS's hard-work and passion for music, BTS has won approximately 195 and been nominated for 297 awards. At their debut, BTS had won few awards, but as years passed their bags started to get "hella thick." On November 19, 2016, BTS won their first major award, which was a Daesang at the Melon Music Awards. Their album The Most Beautiful Moment: Young Forever won 'Best Album of the Year.' After the success of their album series The Most Beautiful Moment in Life and Love Yourself, BTS's popularity skyrocketed and the group started to make a name for themselves internationally. On May 21, 2017, BTS attended the Billboard Music Award Show after being nominated for 'Top Social Artist.' Not only did they win the award, but they would soon return next year (2018) as performers and to win 'Top Social Artist' again. Soon afterwards, BTS was nominated by the Grammys for 'best recording package,' but did not win. However, BTS made history by becoming the first K-Pop group to present an award at the Grammys award show. On April 13, 2019, BTS makes their comeback and breaks history when they performed on SNL (Saturday Night Live) . They were the first K-Pop musical group to perform at SNL. Another notable achievement of BTS is that they have sold out stadium shows. Even though, BTS are widely known around the globe and has become a household name, they never forget where they started and continue to love and thank their fans as they scream, "ARMY" every time they win an award.

39

BTS's magic shop Our bond Since their debut, BTS and ARMYs had a special bond. Whenever the boys win an award, the first thing they say during their acceptance speech is ARMY or "Thank you, ARMY". Most ARMYs found BTS during their hardest times in life. Some claim that BTS saved them or change their outlook on life for the best. BTS also credits ARMY for giving them the best moments in life. And through their music, it is evident that BTS truly love and appreciate their fans. Examples of songs dedicated to ARMYs are: "Magic Shop" and "2! 3! (Hoping for Better days!)" Because of our strong bond, I dedicate this feature to BTS and ARMYs. During BTS's 3rd muster (yearly fan meet), Taehyung (V) made up a new phrase for ARMY, "I purple you," which means I love and trust you until the end. In 2015, Yoongi (Suga) handwritten personal letters to ARMY for his birthday. He took the time to look for nice envelopes to send to ARMY, and along with his personal messages Yoongi sent fans polaroids. On the fancafe (a forum that K-Pop idols use frequently to communicate with their fanbase), Namjoon posted a list of five reasons why BTS loves ARMY. Whenever BTS's albums release, Namjoon always gets on V-live (live stream K-Pop idols use) to talk about the album and to interact with ARMY. During tour, Jin would do heart events for ARMY. Jin would hide paper hearts in his clothing or in a mic to show to ARMY, this soon became a fan favorite. Jin always remembers ARMY and is one of the first members to scream our fandom name whenever BTS accepts their awards or when he's greeting them. He also once bought boxes of fried chicken and soda for ARMY who were attending their recording. Hoseok (J-hope) likes to tell ARMY, "I'm your hope, I'm your angel!" whenever he introduces himself. During the Love Yourself tour, Hoseok gave his little bag to a fan after seeing her cry. Hoseok likes to post Hope on the street to show ARMY his dance moves. Jimin owns a necklace that says ARMY and likes to interact and take care of his fans. During a concert, Jimin noticed that a fan was dehydrated so he gave them his water bottle and he would tells fans not to cry whenever they're at concerts. Jungkook used to make chatrooms and talk with ARMY on Fridays and is always thinking about ARMY. After being inactive on Twitter, Jungkook posted multiple selfies and tried to be more active after realizing ARMY missed him. Since 2013, BTS has shown their love and support towards ARMY and never once forget about us on their journey to international fame and success.

ARMY'S Magic Shop Our Bond There is diversity in the ARMY fandom, there are fans since debut and fans that became ARMY yesterday. ARMY come in all genders, race, and age, but they have one thing in common—BTS changed their life—some changes are major and some minor, but they left a mark in our lives. Some ARMY have commented that BTS came into their life during their hardest times and helped them through it with their music. This page is dedicated to BTS and how they left an imprint on our lives. To ARMYS, BTS are....

Inspirational

"[BTS] produce their own music, making it genuine and using beautiful lyrics to make a difference in this world. They are incredibly charismatic, putting all their effort into what they love. This is in turn motivates me to strive to be as hardworking as them." M.N.

Comfort

"They mean a lot to me. Even though. I can’t understand Korean, every time I listen to their music or watch their funny videos, I feel at peace. For those minutes, I forget about my problems, and feel protected and ready to get through them." - Twitter ARMY

Hope

"They give me hope that maybe one day this world will be full of people like them." Twitter ARMY

Motivation

"I found BTS when I was at rock bottom. I was a college dropout still living at home with no job, no money, almost no friends, and honestly no life. At first watching their videos was just a distraction from my depression, especially since translating certain things took extra time, but the most songs I listened to, the more I realized how much I could relate to the lyrics. And the more I got to know all 7 of them through videos and their twitter, the more inspired I felt. Their message was exactly what I needed. Don't give up, love yourself, you have to be perfect to be a good person, try a little more, you can still be happy in the process of reaching your goals. So I went back to therapy, and to college. I'm on the honor roll. I"m happier than I've ever been in my life...I'm studying to be a therapist now and I got "Love Yourself" tattooed on me so I never forget. They're one of the best parts of my day, every day... They saved my life and have done nothing but improve it since I found them." - Sarah

We love you, BTS ARMY around the globe show their love and support towards BTS through their actions. If a member's birthday happens during tour, ARMY who are attending the concert on the same day as the member's birthday usually sing happy birthday to them. ARMY makes birthday projects for each member and donate in their name. We send loving messages to BTS whenever they tweet or when they're on V-live. During comebacks, ARMYs set up goals for streaming and preorder albums to show their support. K-ARMYs (Korean ARMYs, also known as "K-Diamonds") show their support towards BTS by attending their recordings for their performances on music shows. Since the beginning, ARMYs have been showering BTS with love and support, and we will continue to be BTS's wings.
