Healthcare Experience Established in 1910, Colwyn Foulkes and Partners has extensive experience in the medical sector, starting with the Colwyn Bay Hospital built in 1927, and continuing till the present day. Medical science and standards have improved dramatically since this first project, but our core principles of context, client and community are as applicable now as they were then. We have worked with many clients on a wide variety of schemes in the healthcare sector, and each was a unique response to the ambitions of the client and the needs of the community. The following document contains a few brief examples from almost a century of work in the sector. If any of our work interests you, you would like to see more of our projects, or you would like a more detailed exposition of our work and approach, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Hospitals As the population increases, the centralised approach to hospital design is becoming less efficient. Increasingly prevalent in Healthcare development are local, smaller scale hospitals, designed to fit the community they are part of. Our team has designed, re-purposed, and improved existing designs for a variety of different hospitals. Whether we are problem-solving existing facilities, designing extensions, or installing new facilities, our approach is always on-time, to budget and takes the social realm into account. Our healthcare team is led by Hugh Jamieson, whose expertise and extensive knowledge of the sector adds to the practice’s wealth of experience.

New Victoria Hospital The relationship we have to our health is growing more intimate, and the space in which we nurture health, although clinical, does not have to be cold and detatched. Our design combines the high levels of pragmatism essential to good medical design with intimacy and accessibility. A stress free environment of simple routes and beautiful interiors. Our approach was formed following extensive consultation with the medical staff. We focused on simplyfying the internal planning to promote intuitive wayfinding for visitors and staff. It consists of 4 new state of the art operating theatres, assosciated clinical accomodation, a new 14 bed Day Surgery Unit, new Outpatients Department, with minor procedure suites, as well as staff facilities and extended Imaging Department. Construction started on site in late July 2014 and the phased building contract will last two and a half years.

NVH- Layout

A key component of our design was the simplification of the internal layout to provide a single, intuitive route through the hospital. Although other internal navigations are available to staff, the design makes patient access straightforward, with no need to pass through any departments not related to the patient’s treatment. A simple solution to confused wayfinding was to operate one public entrance. For a small scale hospital, this immediately improves the control that staff has over the flow of patients and visitors, as well as ensuring that the most used facilities, are immediately accessible without any unnecesary travelling through the hospital.

Selected Projects

An Acute Hospital with 700 bedrooms costing ÂŁ311m for Mid-Yorkshire NHS Trust. Our senior architect for the Healthcare sector, Hugh Jamieson, was Team Leader on this project for Building Design Partenrship Architects. His experience in the sector is extensive, and his approach is both methodical and highly innovative. For this project he was responsible for Technical Design, Production Information, coordination, specification and fabric design.

Pinderfields Hospital - Wakefield

A community hospital comprising 60 Beds, rehabilitation services, maternity and Outpatients department. Working with Murphy Phillips, Hugh led the project and was responsible for design, clinical space planning adjacencies, all room plans, elevations, and production information. Hugh personally ran clinical user meetings, masterminding the space planning and development of the entire hospital, and between departments.

Care Communities Care strategy is changing. With a growing elderly population living longer than before, there is a demand for more tailored and integrated experiences across the care sector. As a direct reponse to this demand, there are now an increasing number of sophisticated care communities that include within one system, respite care, independent living, residential care, nursing, dementia and palliative care. We have worked on some of the first graduated residential care communities in the country, with the understanding that regardless of the reason, be it old age, infirmity, mental health or physical recovery, the best facilities take you through the whole range of care requirements in one, continuous environment. We have worked closely with the NHS, Cygnet Healthcare, The Pennaf Group and various other private healthcare and housing companies to masterplan complex care systems, where all the stages in care and recovery occur within one graduated environment.

Shipton Under Wychwood This award winning project involved transforming a grade II listed building from a private home into what was the country’s first comprehensive, graduated residential care community. Our design included a purpose built nursing wing for 24 hour care, 16 self contained flats, 12 cottages, a library, dining rooms, community facilities and a communal courtyard facility in the middle of the beautiful gardens and grounds. Whilst keeping the original buildings intact, we re- configured the internal layout, and installed new light sources and bespoke timber joinery. This includes a 16th century tithe barn, now used as a community hall, and theatre for group activities. The extensive new building and modification blends seamlessly with the original buildings, using appropriate materials and features. Understanding the specialist needs for this project, we included a myriad of design solutions tailored to the comfort of the eldery residents.

Care Communities

The restoration and conversion of a Grade 1 Listed House and Stable Block to form nursing and residential care complex. Consent granted following detailed exploration of planning and environmental issues, including close liason with the English Heritage over restoration of the building. Its furniture and decorations, and the unobtrusive integration of new accommodation and services seamlessly invest new purpose into the historic building.

Tabley House

The refurbishment and extension of exisiting buildings to form a 53 bed psychiatric clinic and support facilities, including graduated care. Carried out under a Design and Build Contract, including extensive landscaping. Used primarily as a mental health facility for the young, the facility incorporates meeting spaces, and carefully managed environments balancing privacy and social exchange.

Harbour Care Centre Currently in development, our care complex design for the Pennaf Group in Abersoch, North Wales, is an socially integrated project whose limits extend far into the surrounding community. Functioning on a daily basis as a drop in centre and community hub for the local elderly population, it also provides respite for local care givers, has sophisticated nursing facilities, and contains residential units for independent living. It also contains two floors of close quarters care for those with Alzheimers or Dementia. Another example of a fully graduated care community, there are many design solutions we have integrated into the layout and detailing that deal with the particular needs of the residents. For more detailed examples of these design solutions see the layout plans overleaf.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

Lounge/Communal Space Staff Areas Ancillary Acommodation Staircore Circulation Depending on whether the residents move in as a couple or on their own, there are different sized apartments. Each group of apartments or single rooms (based on level of care) has its own dedicated lounge area, as well as access to larger commual spaces such as the central courtyard and the gardens. There is a hairdressing and grooming facility, allotments in the communal garden for those interested in gardening, and a cafe/canteen on the ground floor, as well as other flexible spaces used for music, crafts and other activities. Always present in case of need, but never imposing, there are nursing stations positioned at key convergence points, and a responsive request system built into the residential units. The room proportions, lighting, furnishing and the layout of communal spaces all take into consideration the recomendations for care home design, ensuring that those with Dementia or Alzheimers feel as comfortable and familiar as possible with their surroundings.

Healthcare

Specialist Healthcare Centres We have a wealth of experience in the design and improvement of specialised healthcare centres, drop-ins and day clinics. Care, whichever sector it supports, has core principles that will always apply. The ease of movement, comfort of surroundings, quality of support and an intuitive layout are always essential. There are however, more precise requirements from particular fields, and we maintain the core principles of care whilst focusing on these specifics. We have created specialist care facilities for ASD, AIDS, HIV, the elderly, head traumas and psychiatric care, amongst others. Each area has its own particular needs and facilities, from hydro therapy to brain-imaging, visual therapy or counselling suites. We make sure that once we have identified and designed these specialist facilities, they are seamlessly integrated into the layout, according to the movements of patients and staff, so that the transition between different areas of the care process is calm, easy and stress free.

NEW VICTORIA HOSPITAL | PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT 1

Care Facilities We have designed many spaces for particular facilities during our work in the care sector. Whether these be visual therapy, hydro therapy, physiotherapy or psyhciatric treatment, we are aware that the space in which we receive treatment affects our relationship with it. As such we always strive to make our spaces pleasing, tranquil and effective.

Flexible Gym Space that allows for privacy and natural light to penetrate through the screens.

Our physiotherapy designs aim to make exercise a calming task, not a mechanical, pressured one. The competititve atmosphere of the gym is not appropriate to the process of healing, and the exercise taking place is often slow and structured, lending itself to the atmosphere of Japanese design aesthetics. The screens allow the room to be partitioned as necessary, but allow natural light into the space, balancing privacy and atmosphere effectively. Depending on the nature of the facility, the design of the therapy rooms reflect the needs of the patient. In our facilities for the Leonard Cheshire specialist Head Injuries Unit, the surroundings are pleasing and incorporated playfully into the nature of the therapy. The visual therapy facility was built to facilitate the simulation exposure used in rehabilitation treatment.

Specialist Care Centres

The careful extension and modification of two listed buildings, one Victorian, the other postwar, to provide a day clinic healthcare centre. It has served in this capacity for a variety of different purposes, Including HIV, AIDS and Learning Disabilities. The new extension linking the two buildings was designed with a smooth contour, mirroring the curvature of the existing external walls and balconies, and joining the two buildings both visually and structurally.

The Landmark - Tulse Hill

Conversion of a derelict Mile End Municipal Swimming baths to provide a day care centre of persons living with AIDS and HIV. An exceptionally complex refurbishment and conversion of a delapidated, asbestos laden early 20th Century building on a congested inner city site. We maximised use of space, comfort of surroundings, and ease of access. Providing much needed, sophisticaed care in a deprived area.

The Globe - Mile End

It required dealing with the added complications of the building being immediately above a London Underground Station.

Sussex Beacon The Sussex Beacon was the first purpose build AIDS Hospice in Britain. The Hospice provides care for the infirm and the terminally ill. The entire building is designed to cater for full mobility standards whilst avoiding any impression of an institution. Costs were kept down by using a timber frame construction system. The design allows for easy extension at a later date, if required. The atrium of the building was designed to bring light into the building on every floor, as well as creating an entrance to the care centre that felt neither too enclosed nor exposed, a response to our understanding of the delicate balance between public awareness and private illness.

Merton Place Care Home A specialist residential project for the elderly and infirm. Merton care home echoes the gabling and timber beams of the traditional architecture of the town, whilst upholding the standards of a modern care home. On a practical level this meant the considered use of warm colours, and a fusion of traditional design and contemporary facilities. The building is rated “excellent under the BREEAM guidlines, conserving both heat and energy effectively. Merton Care Home was designed with one primary focus, the comfort of the residents. Focusing on quality care and serene atmospheric effects, we organised the layout and composition of the building to be as intuitive and easy to navigate as possible, for both patients and staff. As well as this we engaged local landscape designers to blend the ground level garden area, accesible to the residents, with the elevated view of the listed garden beyond.
