Residential Care
History Established in 1910, Colwyn Foulkes and Partners has extensive experience in the resdiential sector, including the Beaumaris Housing project in 1947. The elegant simplicity, and sound economy of the scheme was responsible for a change in construction byelaws that has affected every house built in Britain since. It saved on capital and running costs which helped build more public housing. The nature of public housing and residential care have evolved dramatically since 1947, but our approach and focus on the client, context and community are as applicable now as they ever were. Each project is a unique response to the ambitions of the client and the needs of the community, delivered on time, and to budget. The following document contains a few brief examples from almost a century of work in the sector. If any of our work interests you, and would like to see more of our projects, or if you would like a more detailed exposition of our work and approach, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Care Communities Care strategy is changing. With a growing elderly population living longer than before, there is a demand for more tailored and integrated experiences across the care sector. As a direct reponse to this demand, there are now an increasing number of sophisticated care communities that include within one system, respite care, independent living, residential care, nursing, dementia and palliative care. We have worked on some of the first graduated residential care communities in the country, with the understanding that regardless of the reason, be it old age, infirmity, mental health, disability or physical recovery, the best facilities take you through the whole range of care requirements in one, continuous environment. We have worked closely with the NHS, Cygnet Healthcare, The Pennaf Group, John Grooms and various other private healthcare and housing companies to masterplan complex care systems, where all the stages in care and recovery occur within one graduated environment.
Shipton Under Wychwood This R.I.B.A award winning project involved transforming a grade II listed building from a private home into what was the country’s first comprehensive, graduated residential care community. Our design included a purpose built nursing wing for 24 hour care, 16 self contained flats, 12 cottages, a library, dining rooms, community facilities and a communal courtyard facility in the middle of the beautiful gardens and grounds. Whilst keeping the original buildings intact, we re- configured the internal layout, and installed new light sources and bespoke timber joinery. This includes a 16th century tithe barn, now used as a community hall, and theatre for group activities. The extensive new building and modification blends seamlessly with the original buildings, using appropriate materials and features. Understanding the specialist needs for this project, we included a myriad of design solutions tailored to the comfort of the eldery residents.

Dolphin Court Dolphin Court was one of many projects we have undertaken for the John Grooms assosciation, now Livability. They are a charity that specialises in the provision of tailored care for those with disabilities. Livability understands the desire for independence and a frustration at homogenous approach to care within the disabled community. Dolphin Court was designed as an intermediary residential facility to impart skills for both living and working to those looking to increase their independence. The project is a building of 17 flats, each of which has its own kitchen, with the majority overlooking the sea. Tailored for wheelchair users, and facilties are modified. The counters and utilities for the kitchen and bathroom have adjustable heights, the rooms are endowed with spacious dimensions, the building uses double-width corridors and has a central lift shaft in immediate proximity to the entrance.

South Street Care Centre Another project for the John Grooms retirement complex of 40 residential units for independent living, the development includes on-site care facilities, accessible at all times, but never imposing. The site is in immeditate proximity, and at level access, to the public transport network and the town centre. The steep site had to be addressed in the design to allow total mobility and the residential units are equipped with adaptable fixtures in the bedrooms and kitchens.

High House Mews A specially built community of independent living units for those 50+. The project consists of two storey ‘future-proofed’ appartments. This consists of modular layouts, the ground floor converting to a bedroom as mobility requires, and the facilities adjsutable as the residents’ needs change with age. The development was built out of Yorkshire stone, and subtly integrates the new build into the surroundings with due attention to traditional detail and local styles. The mews is situated within the grounds of a Grade II listed manor house, which contains a variety of complimentary services to the residents. The project proved extremely successful, as the area is beautiful, the facilities flexible, and the experience tailored to the specific needs of the residents.
Godden Green This project involved the refurbishment and extension of an exisiting building complex to form a 53 bed psychiatric clinic and support facilities, including graduated mental healthcare and respite care. Carried out under a Design and Build Contract, including extensive landscaping, the development focused on creating a tranquil atmosphere, and organising space in a way that allows for the diverse range of needs in the patients. Used primarily as a mental health facility for the young, the facility incorporates meeting spaces, communal activity locations, and carefully managed private environments. We organised these spaces to correctly address a delicate balance, the equal value, but different ratios of seclusion and social exchange in the recovery process.

Harbour Care Centre Currently in development, our care complex design for the Pennaf Group in Abersoch, North Wales, is a socially integrated project whose limits extend far into the surrounding community. Functioning on a daily basis as a drop in centre and community hub for the local elderly population, it also provides respite for local care givers, has sophisticated nursing facilities, and contains residential units for independent living. It also contains two floors of close quarters care for those with Alzheimers or Dementia. Another example of a fully graduated care community, there are many design solutions we have integrated into the layout and detailing that deal with the particular needs of the residents. For more detailed examples of these design solutions see the layout plans overleaf.

Lounge/Communal Space Staff Areas Ancillary Acommodation Staircore Circulation Depending on whether the residents move in as a couple or on their own, there are different sized apartments. Each group of apartments or single rooms (based on level of care) has its own dedicated lounge area, as well as access to larger commual spaces such as the central courtyard and the gardens. There is a hairdressing and grooming facility, allotments in the communal garden for those interested in gardening, and a cafe/canteen on the ground floor, as well as other flexible spaces used for music, crafts and other activities. Always present in case of need, but never imposing, there are nursing stations positioned at key convergence points, and a responsive request system built into the residential units. The room proportions, lighting, furnishing and the layout of communal spaces all take into consideration the recomendations for care home design, ensuring that those with Dementia or Alzheimers feel as comfortable and familiar as possible with their surroundings.
Merton Place Care Home A specialist residential project for the elderly and infirm. Merton care home echoes the gabling and timber beams of the traditional architecture of the town, whilst upholding the standards of a modern care home. On a practical level this meant the considered use of warm colours, and a fusion of traditional design and contemporary facilities. The building is rated “excellent under the BREEAM guidlines, conserving both heat and energy effectively. Merton Care Home was designed with one primary focus, the comfort of the residents. Focusing on quality care and serene atmospheric effects, we organised the layout and composition of the building to be as intuitive and easy to navigate as possible, for both patients and staff. As well as this we engaged local landscape designers to blend the ground level garden area, accesible to the residents, with the elevated view of the listed garden beyond.

Sussex Beacon The Sussex Beacon was the first purpose build AIDS Hospice in Britain, it provides drop-in care, respite care for primary care givers, residential care for those with progressive infirmity and palliative care for those in the terminal stage of the illness. The entire building is designed to cater for full mobility standards whilst avoiding any impression of an institution. Costs were kept down by using a timber frame construction system. The design allows for easy extension at a later date, if required. The project included the design of a pleasant garden for the residents to relax and socialise in, and open communal spaces, much needed by the residents, as illness has a tendency to cause isolation. The atrium of the building was designed to bring light into the building on every floor, as well as creating an entrance to the care centre that felt neither too enclosed or exposed, a response to our understanding of the delicate balance between public awareness and private illness.
