INVISIBLE CITIES

Eutropia, a city selected in Invisible City, a novel by Italo Calvino, is also called the city of Mercury. She and her citizens are always changing. She moves on her own chessboard. This city is made of gypsum in 1m x 1m that you can pick up any pieces like playing chess. Every piece is different from one another in different scale.

+ The making process of the gypsum models. We used several types of moulds and tested a lot in order to get models done as fast as possible. The workshop was in a mess that our class were warned by the school. Comparing to our classmates, we have very few reuseable moulds for every piece of our“chess” is in different form – some are interlocked while others are hidden in another piece, some are made with patterns while others are flat... This made our work outstanding as well. You may watch a video about how Gambit made here: https://youtu.be/Hze-d0Z7Vcs

EPHEMERA

A DESIGN METHOD FOR EPHEMERALITY

My project discusses the ephemerality of the materials, space and experience. As it is said that “Beauty doesn’t last”, it usually takes a lot to protect an artificial space from being destoryed by time, even if they would be destoryed eventually. After researching on the decaying of construction materials and fully understanding the materials I have chosen – ice, I am proposing a method of designing ephemerality by controlling the phenomena. In my project, I also designed several situations to trigger ephemeral features. I hope in the future designers can take this + The shadow cast differently as time pass by. kind of ephemerality of materials and expe++ The refraction of ice just like rainbow. rience into consideration, the design would be not only more sensitive and beautiful, +++ The dew on the glass indicates the change of temperature. but also more reponsible. They could refer to my project since I have developed a method of designing ephemerality.

+ The phenomena: Time, temperature, humidity, sounds, light and shadow, movement of drops, trace of the event, etc...

++ The making process of models. I have experimented many moulds to make ice in any shape I need. I finally find a method to make ice in which iron was needed. It was a “double mould”, the outer mould controlling the leaking due to the expansion of ice while the inner mould controlling the shape of ice. My classmate was helping me iron the expansion part away.

+ A collage to indicate the scale and spatial arrangement of the phenomena.

+ This is how I took photos and made videos. You may watch video of all the phenomena here: https://youtu.be/GmmNnhSTt-0

+ I made all the space dissolving happen when I gave my presentation. The audience could touch and see all of the spatial phenomena by their eyes and hands.

SOLO SMOKERS AREA 3

This project studies the ‘social’ and ‘anti-social’ behaviors of smoking and seeks to adapt an existing footbridge in Wanchai to create a pocket park where smoking is welcomed. Smoking is not only related to nicotine and in/exhaling but also a social behaviour. It is a trend that many international companies enlarge their common space for employees to get inspiration from other departments. Nevertheless, they rarely look into some existing social area such as smoking spots.

Smokers around the area I studied, however, were isolated and lonely. There is no doubt that passive smoking is harmful, but can the boundaries between smokers and non-smokers be diminished? Is it possible to introduce a smoking space to the public without any experience dislikeable?

+ Activities: Compared this map and the left one, smokers won’t stay close to the restaurants with outdoor seats. Many of them prefer quiet places with less pedestrian.

+ The people flow: The traffic mainly happen between Sun Hung Kei Building – Gloucester Road and Sun Hung Kei Building – Wan Chai Pier. Pedestrian preferred walking under cover.

+ The proposed pocket smoking park adapts to the existing footbridge where there is a node smokers usually smoke before they entre the building. Smokers from different buildings in the area could meet here. Considered smoke goes up in the air, the smoking area is introduced by several elevated islands. The park is divided into 3 main areas which are themselves inter-connected: the bypass, the basin and the highland. The highland is designed particularly with smokers in mind, whilst the basin is designed for all. The method adopted to LAYERING OF SMOKERS AND NON-SMOKERS attract smokers to the highland is actually by locating all ashtrays there. 1:100

BLACK MILK

A RESTURANT

Black Milk is inspired by A Clockwork Orange, a film talking about violation and human dignity. The restaurant is a spatial interpretation of the film. There is inversion of the space such as carving a sharp outdoor garden on 1/f, shaft inside building with a well protected facade. It would be a sense of nervous when meeting the sharp garden which cannot be touched. The restaurant is located in PMQ, a designer hub, neighbouring many galleries, bars and historic blocks with many greening in. The milk is a clash of orgainic feeling and underground culture around the site. It is a place to enjoy different fun.

SAUNA HOTEL ROOM

+ Lighting test

This hotel room is designed for the businessmen who are tired for whole day social activities and desire for relax. The room is designed in different zone with different combination of temperature and humidity to bring people utter relaxation. There is no standing furniture in the room but waving floor to create a sense of void and bring back one’s ego. The material is mainly timber and stone to make a natural feeling.

TEA FOR TWO

INSTALLATION

The intallation is consist of two plastic chairs, a mannequin made of concrete waste, a cable reel as table, a tea set and audience. Facing the skyline of Hong Kong, the installation is a mirror of those beautiful skyscrapers, but showing their rough inners. The tea set build an emotional bridge of tasting between concrete man and the audience. The man-shaped is inviting audience to slow down their busy life in this good Sunday on the grassland, to have a small talk about this prosperous concrete forest in front where we live in and to share their stories as a part of the concrete landscape.

July Her 2013 – 2017

+ Our site was at West Kowloon Promenade. Facing the classic Skyline of Hong Kong, I would like to invite people to have conversation to something behind the good view in front. The things I would like to reveal in such a Sunday afternoon is the construction waste that produced under the beauti-

ful skin of the cities. I used the waste in PolyU to regenerate a mannequin in a gesture of “He wanna talk to you“. Our installation must be related to five sense, mine was “taste”. I, therefore, involved “Tea“, a common Chinese way of communication to implicate my concept.
