Can we be informal? Let’s be informal…Growing up as the niece of Mary Metra, the publisher of this magazine, means I come from a world where if you’re gay it is a simple fact of life, part of who you are. I would say it is accepted but really there is nothing to accept. Like I said it is a simple fact. I file it in the fact section of my brain under your name and move on. As a kid, I didn’t know there was a world so unaccepting of people who vary from the sexual orientation of Adam and Eve. So, when I started caring about the world outside of my little bubble, I’m not going to lie, it was a bit of a culture shock to realize that not everyone saw a simple fact as simply as I did. It is grossly unfortunate. When you get to know me, you’ll know that honesty and the family trait of over sharing are two of, for better or worse, my greatest qualities. So in the interest of honesty, I came to my Aunt Mary a few weeks ago and asked her if I could write some articles for Metra in an effort to gain some exposure in the world of writing. We bounced back and forth trying to figure out what I could write and landed on something along the lines of a fact page. Aunt Mary then suggested, due to the timing of this next issue, I should look 16 Metra Magazine, Issue # 846

into Coming Out Day. Now call it living under a rock if you would like or just another level of culture shock but I had no idea what she was talking about. You see in my simple world, no such day is needed. I had once again forgotten that the greater world and its lack of acceptability for the gay life style. Gay’s need such a special day to spotlight a simple fact of life. That’s okay, whatever it takes to get those over complicated thinkers down to the level of reality! This October will mark the 26th anniversary of National Coming Out Day. For those of you out there who are like me and don’t do math, the year was 1988. A psychologist hailing from New Mexico by the name of Robert Eichberg and California based political leader (and an openly gay woman) Jean O’Leary founded what would be coined National Coming Out Day or NCOD for short. The date, the eleventh of October, was chosen as a nod to the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which occurred the previous year on, you guessed it, October 11th. Here is yet another fun fact for you, Aunt Mary or Mary Metra as you all know her by, actually took part in the march! And just when you thought she couldn’t get any cooler... Anyways back to business, during its first year, NCOD, was observed nationally by 17 states. The movement grew in its second year when NCOD picked up a few more states bringing the new total to 21 that recognized the day. By its third year of observance all 50 states were on board with NCOD. So this October 11th, if you’re planning on coming out, congratulations! Thank you for being who you are! One final word to the wise, if you’re worried or nervous about it, don’t be! There is no reason to fret. In the famous words of Dr. Seuss “Those that mind don’t matter and those that matter don’t mind.” So get out there and just simply, and unapologetically, be you.
