PLEASURE Advertisers spend billions of dollars every year to convince us that we should be enjoying pleasure with every bite we put in our mouths, beverage we consume, or minute we spend in our cars. What they don’t urge us towards is happiness. There are a lot of things that bring us temporary pleasure that don’t increase our happiness and, in may cases, often decrease it. A second helping of dessert is a good example. Recognizing the difference between pleasure and happiness can often help us to avoid making choices that aren’t in our own best interests. It can also help us not to feel deprived when we choose to forgo a tempting item if we see ourselves as pursuing happiness rather than denying ourselves pleasure.
