Henry W. Benton February 18, 1930 - April 7, 2018 Henry (Hank) W. Benton, age 88, passed peacefully on Saturday, April 7, 2018 in Chicago. He was born February 18, 1930 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was the youngest son of Van Hook Craig “Van” Benton and Ethel (Elliott) Benton. He was a graduate of Shattuck-St. Mary’s High School in Faribault, Minnesota and attended University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Hank was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean War. After the Korean War he lived in Juneau, Alaska and worked for many years in the fishing industry. For over 35 years, Hank was active in the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus serving in various leadership capacities, earning the distinctions of Fourth Degree and Honorary Life Member. In retirement, Hank was an active volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul Society in Juneau. It was in Juneau that he helped to raise his family of four children. Hank enjoyed family gatherings, making his special food dishes (Jalapeño Poppers, pizza and “hot” pasta!), and westerns. He will be fondly remembered for his easy going, gentle and loving way with his family and other loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers (Elliott and Van). Hank is survived by his sister, Patricia Benton, his daughters Sarah (Allen) Arnett and Jennifer (Brandon) Bell, his identical twin sons Craig (Phebby) Benton and Matthew (Kimberly) Benton, six grandsons and three granddaughters. A memorial service will be held at Brookdale Senior Living in Oak Park, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may be made in Hank’s name to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 8617 Teal St., Juneau, AK 99801.
Hazel Joan Nowlin February 1933 - April 2018 Hazel Joan Nowlin passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on April 2, 2018, having recently celebrated her 85th birthday at the Juneau Pioneer Home. Hazel was born in El Paso, Texas, in February 1933, to Joseph and Susie Gordon. She graduated from high school in Montana; she soon left Montana for a job in Seattle. She and her cousin roomed at the YWCA. Hazel met her future husband in January 1953, Charles Nowlin (“Chuck”), when he offered to carry her heavy trunk up a steep Seattle hill. Chuck was in the Navy and before he shipped out to Korea in July of 1953, they were married. When Chuck’s naval tour was over in 1954, he and Hazel moved to Alaska and raised their family. They moved into an old mining house that was located at the end of Basin Road. The house had no insulation and the family hugged the stove when the Taku winds blew. For many years, the family had no modern conveniences and Hazel told stories of doing laundry in the bathtub with a scrub board and hanging the clothes to dry before the stove. Hazel worked for the State of Alaska while raising her children. She and Chuck enjoyed fishing and hunting and after retirement, traveling the country visiting family and friends. After Chuck’s death in 1993, Hazel continued to enjoy Alaska, saying there was no place she’d rather be. She kept busy with her church activities and loved crocheting, knitting and yard work. She worked for many years with the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, raising money to build the new thrift store and to send children to kid’s camp in the summer, among other worthy causes. She was a member of the Pioneers of Alaska, Women’s Auxiliary, as well. She also enjoyed keeping in contact with friends through greeting cards and always had a spare room available for visiting guests. Hazel is survived by her children, Peggy Boman (Walt) and Don Nowlin, and her sister, Marguerite Durham. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Paul Nowlin (Rebekah), Andrew Boman (Meridith), Danielle Mayfield (Lee), Jeffrey Boman (Lisa), Brian Nowlin (Leslie), and Elizabeth Nowlin, and her great-grandchildren, Andrew Mayfield, Joshua Mayfield, Madelyn Boman, David Boman, Adelaine Bezotte, Luke Mayfield, Nora Mayfield, Parker Boman, Lydia Boman, and Kennedy Nowlin. Her adopted daughter, Donna Trompeter, predeceased her in 2009, and her son, Tom Nowlin, predeceased her in February 2018, after a long illness. A memorial service will be held at the Juneau Travelodge on April 28, at 5:00 p.m. Donations can be made to The Hub, an after-school program for middle schoolers, PO Box 32000, Juneau, AK 99803.

Lenore “Lee” Sandor December 24, 1925 - April 4, 2018 Lenore J. Sandor (nee Barbat) was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 24, 1925 and passed away on April 4, 2018 in Sitka, Alaska. Lenore was the youngest daughter of John and Tillie Barbat, who raised both her and her older sister Mildred (Pysarchuk) in Cleveland. After two years of college at Baldwin Wallace in Ohio, Lenore’s spirit of adventure took her to Juneau in 1951, when Alaska was still a territory. Lenore had fond memories of working for Don Burris assisting him in his business of trading in Alaska Native arts and crafts. She married her husband, John Sandor, in 1956, and due to his job as a Forest Service ranger, they moved several times before finally settling back in Juneau in 1976. During their lifetime, John and Lenore had two children, Mary Helen (Juneau) and Janet (Danville, CA). Most notably, Lenore was awarded the 1988 Juneau Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. This distinction was bestowed on Lenore for her tireless work as one of the founding members of REACH, Inc., an Alaskan organization dedicated to the well-being of those with developmental delays and needs, and bridging the gap between them and the community at large. In private life, Lee was an avid fan of travel, gardening, baking and reading. Lenore was quite active in the community and was often seen attending P.E.O., garden club and church meetings and events. After residing in Juneau for 40 years, Lenore most recently was living at the Sitka Pioneer Home. Lee was preceded in death by her parents, and older sister, Mildred. She is survived by her husband, John Sandor; her oldest daughter, Mary Helen of Juneau, Alaska; and youngest daughter, Janet Freiman of Danville, California; her son-in- law, Harold Freiman; and the two grandsons she adored, Ben and Jacob Freiman. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and other relatives, most specifically in Washington State and Ohio. A memorial service was held in Sitka, Alaska on April 6, 2018. A celebration of Lee’s life is being planned in California, date and time to be determined. The family would welcome donations in Lee’s memory to REACH, Inc. As mentioned above, Lee was one of the original 5 founding members of REACH, an organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for developmentally disabled children and adults in Alaska and the organization is now celebrating its 40th anniversary. Checks can be mailed to: REACH, Inc., 213 3rd Street, Juneau, Alaska 99801. Please designate your gift in the memo section: “In memory of Lee Sandor”
Claire Adele Wipperman October 3, 1930- December 20, 2017 Claire Adele Wipperman, 87, a second generation pioneer Alaskan, died in Newport, Oregon on December 20, 2017. A long-time Juneau, Anchorage, and Halibut Cove resident, she was the daughter of the late Federal District Court Judge George and Ruth Folta. A celebration of her life will be held in Juneau May 5, 2018. Contact son Richard at 907.242.3235 for details. She was born October 3, 1930 in Juneau and graduated from Juneau High School in 1948. Married to Lou Rainery in 1951, she had two sons, Richard (1952) and Mark (1957). Singing was her lifelong passion; she sang in local churches and studied voice at University of Oregon. Moving to Anchorage in 1960, Claire toiled in the legal industry, and as a court reporter, wrapping up her career as an in-court clerk
for the Alaska Court System. She continued singing, starring in a long list of local musicals and operas (from which she learned how to live like a diva). She also acted in dramatic roles, including the one woman show “The Belle of Amherst.” Remarrying in 1970 to Ray Wipperman, the two built a cabin in Halibut Cove on Kachemak Bay, spending springs and summers there for over 30 years. Claire loved spending time on the waters of Kachemak Bay, fishing and sightseeing. She and Ray travelled extensively in the lower 48 and abroad. After a short residence in the Anchorage Pioneer Home, Claire moved to Newport Oregon in 2015 to be with son Richard and family. She appreciated a good meal (and glass of wine). A lifelong progressive, Claire bemoaned the country’s recent turn of politics. To the end she retained her acerbic wit and sense of humor. Predeceased by first husband Lou Rainery; second husband Ray Wipperman; and son Mark Rainery. Claire is survived by son Richard Rainery and wife Kay Klose of Newport, OR; brother Richard Folta (Julie) of Haines AK; and step-son Tim Wipperman (Jean) of Durham, NC. She also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
