MATCH OF THE MONTH
Meet James and Diego who have been matched for a year and a half. They like to go swimming, watch movies and cook together and recently attended a monthly match activity to tour a Black Hawk helicopter. Diego relates that, “I saw James and I knew immediately he was my Big Brother. He feels like a real big brother to me!” Diego’s favorite thing about having a Big Brother is having someone to hang out with and do activities. “I like being James’ best friend,” he remarked. James reports he was an only child and, “having a young person look up to you is really special to me because I never got that since I didn’t have siblings.” James finds Diego creative and hilarious with a vivid imagination. “I can tell he will do great things!” he predicts. When they get together for activities, James finds that, “Diego complements me well because I’m an introvert and he definitely is not! It makes it easy to be around him.” Diego’s mother, Christy, reflects, “Those two just fit together. They have similar interests and their personalities harmonize. Diego lights up at the prospect of hanging out with James-everything about James is so cool to him. It’s not just that James is a great role model-though he absolutely is-but their friendship itself role models a kind, silly, healthy relationship. I’m grateful to watch it unfold.” James would like others to know that this mentorship program isn’t just for the kid, “if you’re like me and don’t have siblings or hope to have kids someday and want a taste of what that could be like, Big Brothers Big Sisters is an important thing to be a part of. Being that guiding light in a little kid’s life is such a wonderful thing to be a part of. Others should do it!” he encourages.

SCHEDULES When I was an intern I got into the habit of using a daily planner. This served me well while I was trying to juggle my classes, seeing patients, conferring with supervising doctors and of course all the responsibilities of raising kids. I learned that if you want to make sure it happens write it down! I think most of us are probably pretty good about writing on the calendar if we have a dentist appointment next week or maybe a lunch date we don’t want to forget. We are good at making sure we keep our commitments to others. Just as important I think are our commitments to our-selves. If walking at lunch time or hitting the gym three days a week is important to you try writing it on your calendar before the week starts and treat it like any other appointment.

Gary Bell
September 26, 1964 - April 7, 2018 He was born on the 26th of September 1964 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Juneau, AK, and walked into the woods in Ketchikan, on the 7th of April, 2018. Gary Bell a loved, and loving Father, Son, Brother, Uncle, Nephew and Cousin. Gary was a teacher who loved kids a fisherman, A.N.G. Vet, a merchant seaman, charter boat skipper, and more. He is preceded in death by his son, Douglas; sister Cheryl; uncle John; grandparents Tex & Dottie White, Bill Bell & Vera Porter; and way too many friends. Gary is survived by his son Jonas; his folks Barb & Dennis; sister Donna; brother Kevin and his wife, Angela; life partner Samantha Coronell; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, niece, nephews, and friends. A Memorial at Douglas Island Methodist Church will be held at 1PM, May 6th. A potluck style Celebration of Life will be at Shelter #2, Sandy Beach, at 2:30pm May 6th. If you knew Gary, come on by.
