W. Bruce Monroe

November 22, 1937 - March 28, 2018 W. Bruce Monroe of Denton, Texas, passed away on March 28, 2018, after a brief illness, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife Lee (West) Monroe of Denton, daughter Marlee Wilson and her husband Zane of Dallas, son Bruce M. Monroe and his wife Kathleen of Argyle, sister Davieann Witt and her husband Jim of Sequim, Washington, grandsons Hunter, Jett and Slade Monroe of Argyle and nephews Wayne Witt of Corpus Christi, Texas and Ryan Witt of Bremerton, Washington, plus several grandnieces and grandnephews. There will be a celebration of his life in Denton on May 19. Bruce was born in Hobbs, New Mexico, on November 22, 1937, to Bruce C. and Alta M. Monroe. At the age of 13 his family returned to Midland, Texas, where his father was employed in the oil business. Upon graduation from Midland High School, he attended Texas Christian University where he met his future wife Lee Myra West of Geneseo, Illinois. Following graduation, Bruce attended the University of Texas School of Law. After receiving his law degree in 1963, he and Lee with their young daughter moved to Juneau where they lived for the next eighteen years along with their son who was born the following year. Bruce’s love of the outdoors was a deciding factor in their choice to move to the new state with its abundant hunting and fishing opportunities. Bruce’s career included serving as Deputy Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Labor. In 1967 he was appointed to serve as the Presiding District Court Judge for the First Judicial District. He served in that position for 8 years. During that time he was also active in local community projects such as the Fish and Game Advisory Board and serving as president of the Juneau Hospital Board. In 1975 Bruce left the bench to become a partner of the law firm of Birch, Horton, Bittner and Monroe. As the managing partner in the Juneau office, he practiced law for the next 6 years before he and Lee decided it was time to return to Texas in 1981. Upon their return, they began cattle ranching in Blanket, Texas. It was a life they both thoroughly enjoyed. In addition to ranching, Bruce was involved with a family business in Mississippi for which he managed timber and mineral interests in Mississippi and Louisiana for the next thirty years. In 2016 Bruce and Lee moved to Denton to be near their children and grandchildren.

Darbie

Darbie is a dapper fellow with a strong handsome face. His rugged good looks and dark striped tabby coloring could land him a spot in Hollywood, or maybe even on a Broadway stage. Luckily for the rest of us, Darbie is more of a friendly family man. He enjoys domestic life and likes sitting on your lap or maybe playing with some toys. He occasionally will give a gentle bite to let you know if you’ve been petting him for too long – too much of a good thing, and all that. But mostly he enjoys human attention and affection. If you don’t have time for him, that’s o.k. as he is cool just hanging out and looking good.

Fraggle

What do you get when you combine a snaggle tooth with a friendly but shy guy? Fraggle! This bashful young kitty has lovely long black and white fur, but he’s a bit embarrassed by his one snaggle tooth that is a result of a slightly crooked jaw. He likes people and will snuggle on your lap while you gently pet him. However, his favorite place at the moment is an out of the way spot where he can safely sit and hide. He would prefer a quiet home where he feels secure and protected. Fraggle is young enough that he can grow and develop enough confidence to venture further out into the world. There’s nothing wrong with him that a little tender, loving care in a forever home won’t cure.

Opal

Opal comes in a neat little package of velvety gray and white. Her bobbed tail completes the overall effect of adorability. She is sweet and trusting and doesn’t hesitate to approach you for petting. She will rub against you in the most endearing manner. Don’t be surprised if she uses your shoulder for a springboard to jump up on a shelf! Cute, young and playful, Opal is a true gem of a kitty.

Lottie

Lottie is a sweet little black cat who happens to be very shy. She is slowly coming out of her shell and enjoys being gently held and petted. You can hear her gently start to purr as she relaxes when you cuddle her. Sudden movement and loud noises will spook her, so she may seek out a secure perch where she can settle in and figure out what’s going on around her. Her bright gold eyes don’t miss a thing. Lottie is such a tender little girl that she will quickly develop into a more confident young kitty if she is lucky enough to find a secure and loving home.

Nicole Quinto, Classified Sales Representative This is a monthly segment highlighting the staff of the Juneau Empire. Between a litter of corgi’s, a full-time job coordinating the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly’s classifieds, and raising two young children, Classified Sales Rep Nicole Quinto hardly has a moment to herself. If she did have that illusory afternoon off the do whatever she likes, this self-described “introvert” — an Empire employee of two years — might actually find herself in a sea of people. For Quinto, an ideal day off would involve a trip to the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle. She’s not big on crowds but Quinto feels most herself shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow comic book fans. “Going there, being around those people, a lot of people call them nerds, geeks, dorks, whathaveyou, but that’s a crowd that — mind you, being an introvert I don’t like crowds — but I can be around 5,000 people in a comic con and I feel completely comfortable,” Quinto said. The 28-year-old Juneau-born-and-bred retail veteran loves her kids, reading and the occasional bike ride. She grew up on Douglas Island and still lives in the Juneau area with her two young children and husband. When she’s not at work, housework and playing with her kids takes up most of her time. At work, she’s a nexus for Juneau’s small, myriad needs. She deals with everything from legal ads, freebies, job notices, home sales and help wanted ads — all which end up in the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly’s classified pages. She takes a professional, customer-oriented approach to her work. It’s about making people happy with the product they’re paying for, she said. She does everything she can to make the classifieds section work for the individual’s needs. “I am trying to make sure that the customer is satisfied with what they’re getting,” she said. One of Quinto’s duties is dealing with obituaries. It’s not easy for family and friends of the recently-deceased to write an obituary. Quinto takes pride in being a helpful, professional face for the newspaper in a difficult time. “Each obituary is important. Each person’s life is important,” Quinto said. “I try to keep a professional face so they have someone who has more stability. Usually, they won’t know what they want to do or how they want to do it, so I try to take a step-by-step approach with them.” Her advice for those calling in with obituaries? “Go ahead and breathe, there’s no rush on this end. Breathe, I am in no hurry,” Quinto said. “I am here to make sure their need is fulfilled as much as I can make it, whether it takes five minutes to tell me what they want or 30 seconds.” Want to place a classified ad? Email Classified@juneauempire.com or call 523-2229.

You can read the 2018 TBMP Guidelines at any CBJ library or online at www. juneau.org/tourism or at www.tbmp.info after May 1st. TBMP has become fully integrated into the culture of tourism business operations in Juneau, involving over 100 companies and nearly 2,500 employees. Concerns? Contact the Tourism Hotline by sending an email to: hotline@ traveljuneau.com or by calling 586-6774 after May 1st. Because we are committed to maintaining the highest standard possible for responsible tourism, we appreciate your continued feedback and assistance.
