Lieutenant-Colonel James “Pat” Hamon Carothers June 18, 1926 - April 16, 2018 One of the last Great Generation U.S. Marines passed away. Lieutenant-Colonel James “Pat” Carothers. 91, died peacefully in Juneau, Alaska, on April 16, 2018. A Veteran of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam (2 tours), and other skirmishes; He was the most decorated US Marine up until the day he retired from the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded 5 Purple Hearts over a 36-year Career and was discharged honorably. Pat Carothers joined the military at the age of 17, and served his country during a period of our history when the need was great. He loved the U.S. Marine Corps., it was his life during and after his retirement. He was active in the VFW, supported USMC Force Recon members, and honoring Military Veterans who gave their lives and all. He was a good Marine. Lieutenant-Colonel Pat Carothers would want to be remembered for love of Country, Semper Fidelis to the U.S. Marines Corps, and his love for his wife, Elsie. He is survived by his wife Elsie Carothers in Juneau; and his sons Colonel Jim Carothers (USMC) in Louisiana, Superintendent Dan Carothers in Juneau, Paul Carothers in Virginia, Brian Carothers in Juneau, and Patrick Carothers, Deputy U.S. Marshal (Deceased). Lt. Colonel Carothers requested no ceremony, and his ashes will be spread on the ocean at a specific location. A marker will be located at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Sitka, Alaska. Any donations should be sent to a VFW or Charity of your choice.

CBJ Boards/Committees Current or Upcoming Vacancies The following is a list of vacancies on CBJ boards, commissions, committees and/or councils. Applications may be picked up outside the Clerk’s Office and are available on Juneau’s website at https://beta.juneau.org/clerk/ boards-committees Submit the applications to the Municipal Clerk’s Office, Room 202 of the Municipal Building (155 S. Seward Street, Juneau, AK 99801), or by fax at 586-4552, or via email at City.Clerk@juneau.org. For further information, call 586-5278. Except as otherwise noted below, the seats are considered “Public Seats” open to anyone interested and willing to commit the time to serve, although there may be some membership criteria specified in a particular board’s governing legislation. Applications may be submitted at any time and the clerk’s office holds all applications for a one year period; if an application due date is not specified one may be announced in the near future. All vacancies are considered Open Until Filled. The Assembly Human Resources Committee (HRC) makes appointment recommendations to the Assembly. The application process for the empowered boards (Airport, Aquatics, Eaglecrest, Docks & Harbors, and Bartlett Regional Hospital boards) plus the Planning Commission go through a more involved application/interview process than the other boards.

Elizabeth “S’eis Tann” Shorty December 15, 1937 - April 27, 2018 Elizabeth Shorty, whose Tlingit name was “S’eis Tann” of the Tinaa Hit (Copper Shield House) of the Kiks”adi Clan of Sitka, has fallen asleep in death on April 27, 2018 in Juneau, Alaska while residing at Wildflower Court. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 2 O’clock pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 2517 Teslin Street. Elizabeth Williams Shorty was born at St. Ann’s hospital in Juneau, Alaska on December 15, 1937. Elizabeth met her future husband, John Shortly Sr., in Hood Bay, Alaska, and later marred on March 10, 1956. She attended the Juneau-Douglas schools, and received her GED from Southeast Regional Resources Center, and she was very proud of that. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Amy Williams Ebona Nelson; her husband of 57 years, John Shorty Sr.; daughter, Darlene Shorty; her sister, Maxine Robinson; and her brother, George Finley Williams. Elizabeth is survived by her sister Andrea Ebona-Michel of Juneau; her brother Andrew (Andy) Ebona of Juneau; daughters Sally Ann Stephens (Loren) of Juneau, Linda Mauch of Oregon; her sons John Shorty Jr. (Hazel), Bill Shorty, David Shorty, Frank Shorty, Samuel Shorty, and George Shorty of Juneau. She leaves numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Growing up, she spent a lot of time in the canneries babysitting for friends and relatives in Tennekee Springs, Hawk Inlet, and Hood Bay. She worked for State of Alaska, Department of Safety, Bureau of Indian Affairs; she especially enjoyed working as a night aide at the girl’s dormitory at Mt. Edgecombe, and retired as a housekeeper for the Baronof Hotel. Elizabeth enjoyed fishing and spending time with her husband, family and friends, berry picking, photography, and long walks with she was able. Liz will be remembered as a kind, soft spoken-gentle soul, loved and missed by all.
