Ricky Deising Retired-Alaska Marine Highway Volunteer DJ-KRNN 102.7 FM Every time I have gone to Bartlett, I’ve been treated with respect, dignity and kindness. I see providers out in the community and we always say hello to each other. They want to know how I am doing. That’s what I like about Bartlett Hospital, they’re downhome. They are good people. I stay in Juneau because as a 65year old male with heart problems I want to be taken care of. If I go into the Emergency Department and they say we gotta medevac you out, I know there is a jet I will be put on and flown out of here. They don’t mess around. They get you the help you need. Everybody at Bartlett really steps up. I’ve never been treated poorly. I recommend Bartlett Regional Hospital. Bartlett Regional Hospital is actively seeking more Southeast Alaskan stories about our local hospital. If you are interested in being a #PatientofBRH, please contact Katie Bausler, Community Relations Director at 796-8567 or kbausler3@bartletthospital.org.
Friends of Dee Longenbaugh are invited to join her family at a memorial service on Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 325 Gold St., in downtown Juneau. A reception will follow.

Emily May (Nelson) Piceno 1954-2018
Emily May (Nelson) Piceno (Eagle-Shark- Wooshkeetaan) passed from this world on February 25, 2018 surrounded by family. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and true friend to many had a short bout with a Neuroendocrine Tumor during which time an outpouring of love from family and friends helped her keep smiling.
Emily was born June 4, 1954 to Maurice (Puggy) and Dorothy (Clausen) Nelson in Juneau, and has always lived in Juneau. She liked to travel and especially enjoyed short Seattle getaways. She had so much love for her native culture and always looked forward to Celebration. She was able to watch her youngest grandson dance with “The Children of All Nations” dance group in the 2008 Celebration. Something she was so proud of. In 1972 Emily married the love of her life Ray Piceno. As a young bride she was eager to start a life with her new husband. They traveled to California, where much of Ray’s family lives, and she got a crash course in Mexican cooking – a skill she enhanced and demonstrated for family and many friends over the years. Emily was a devoted mother to her three children, was always there to help others with their children, and helped nurture her grandchildren. To family and friends alike, she was referred to as “Mom” “Grandma” and “Auntie Em”. The major part of Emily’s working life was spent in the catering industry. For 22 years she worked as a bartender and cook at the Juneau Elks Lodge. She moved to the Juneau Moose Lodge as a cook for a number of years and then back to the Elks Lodge as a bartender when the new facility opened. She started the Friday night potlucks at the Elks which became so big that her daughter
received her TAPS card so she could step in and help. Emily was so much more than her job title. Both the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge knew they could always count on Emily to step in and help when needed. Many members of both Lodges knew that Emily would always listen and offer her wisdom in a nononsense way.
Emily was a well-grounded and a family oriented woman. She loved her big family and everyone knew that. When there were differences of how to do things, she made her position very clear, and many problems were solved because of that clarity, which was usually common sense. Emily was preceded in passing by her parents Dorothy and Maurice (Puggy) Nelson; sister Sandy Revis, and her oldest child Joseph “Big Joe” Piceno. She is survived by her husband Ray Piceno; son John Piceno; daughter Katie Erickson (Neil); brother Mike Nelson (Patti Lewis) of Elfin Cove, AK; sisters Cheryl Christensen (Al) of Junction City, OR, Rachel Kasnick (Rick) of Juneau, Kelly Crosby (Mitch) of Alturas, CA, and Juanita Waterman (Sterling) of Maine; grandsons Alex Piceno (Alisha Goodno), Joe Piceno II, and Brandon Garrison; granddaughter Savanah Guanzon; and many nieces and nephews. Emily requested there be no service. A private family burial will precede her celebration of life. The Celebration will be at the Juneau Moose Lodge Saturday June 9th at 4pm. This will be open to all her friends and family, with a potluck in her memory, so please bring your favorite dish to share. Potlucks are something Emily always enjoyed. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation (in memory of Emily) to Hospice and Homecare of Juneau locate at 419 6th St., Juneau, AK 99801.
