Nicole Quinto, Classified Sales Representative This is a monthly segment highlighting the staff of the Juneau Empire. Between a litter of corgis, a full-time job coordinating the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly’s classifieds, and raising two young children, Classified Sales Representative Nicole Quinto hardly has a moment to herself. If she did have that illusory afternoon off to do whatever she likes, this selfdescribed “introvert” — an Empire employee of two years — might actually find herself in a sea of people. For Quinto, an ideal day off would involve a trip to the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle. She’s not big on crowds but Quinto feels most herself shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow comic book fans. “Going there, being around those people, a lot of people call them nerds, geeks, dorks, whathaveyou, but that’s a crowd that — mind you, being an introvert I don’t like crowds — but I can be around 5,000 people in a comic con and I feel completely comfortable,” Quinto said. The 28-year-old Juneau-born-and-bred retail veteran loves her kids, reading and the occasional bike ride. She grew up on Douglas Island and still lives in the Juneau area with her two young children and husband. When she’s not at work, housework and playing with her kids takes up most of her time. At work, she’s a nexus for Juneau’s small, myriad needs. She deals with everything from legal ads, freebies, job notices, home sales and help wanted ads — all which end up in the Juneau Empire and Capital City Weekly’s classified pages. She takes a professional, customer-oriented approach to her work. It’s about making people happy with the product they’re paying for, she said. She does everything she can to make the classifieds section work for the individual’s needs. “I am trying to make sure that the customer is satisfied with what they’re getting,” she said. One of Quinto’s duties is handling obituaries. It’s not easy for family and friends of the recently-deceased to write an obituary. Quinto takes pride in being a helpful, professional face for the newspaper in a difficult time. “Each obituary is important. Each person’s life is important,” Quinto said. “I try to keep a professional face so they have someone who has more stability. Usually, they won’t know what they want to do or how they want to do it, so I try to take a step-by-step approach with them.” Her advice for those calling in with obituaries? “Go ahead and breathe, there’s no rush on this end. Breathe, I am in no hurry,” Quinto said. “I am here to make sure their need is fulfilled as much as I can make it, whether it takes five minutes to tell me what they want or 30 seconds.”

Eric James Zentner May 3, 1979 - November 11, 2017 Eric James Zentner arrived into this world on May 3rd 1979 and departed November 11th 2017 to the spiritual realm where we will undoubtedly find him one day—happy, content, and most likely having just returned from a great adventure across the galaxies. Eric was lost while hiking in the Sierra Mountains, yet without a doubt we know his spirit now soars. Eric was a beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a pilot, a diver, a world traveler, a business owner, a philanthropist and a lover of cats. One would be hard pressed to hear Eric say a bad word about anyone. He was an astute observer, but always withheld judgment. Everyone who knew him speaks first of his good heart. Eric loved everything about being in the great outdoors, whether riding his fat bike during the frozen Fairbanks winter or hiking the misty Southeast forests in the summer. He was always game to jump in the ocean, climb a mountain, ski the slopes, or swim to the glacier. But without a doubt, his greatest joy and accomplishment was acquiring his private pilot’s license. He found a joy in flying that seemed to set his very soul free! After receiving his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Washington, Eric treated himself to a long-desired trip, jumping on a train in London and traveling across the continent to Beijing, where he would live and work for a good part of the following year. He had a wicked knack for absorbing languages, and, after studying Japanese and Russian for several years, learned to read, write and speak Chinese. We are certain Eric was enthusiastically welcomed into the next world by his loving grandparents George and Lolly Grady, Nora and Bill Zentner, Betty Quist, and his wonderfully theatrical Uncle Tom. For the time being he leaves behind his dad Bill Zentner, mom JoAnn Grady and stepdad Dan De Roux, his beloved sister Katie and his cherished nephew, Austin. He now watches over his grandfather Bob, his uncles and aunts; John, Paul, Janice, Irvin, Liz, Cathy, Sybil and Ken, and many special cousins. He will be dearly missed by his lifelong pals Dave Shepro, Brady Frickey and Reu Yerkes. A foundation has been established in Eric’s honor, the funds of which will be overseen by impartial administrators and distributed to single mothers to assist with tuition and educational materials for young children. Donations can be made to the Rocinante Memorial Fund c/o Wells Fargo. A celebration of Eric’s life will take place in November, with details to be announced at a later date. In the meantime, we ask that all who knew Eric dedicate an act of kindness in his memory for those less fortunate. He would really like that. A full obituary and photos can be viewed at: www.ericjzentner.com
To all our wonderful friends, family, businesses, and outlying communities, Steve and I want to thank everyone for all the loving support, prayers, comforting hugs, and beautiful cards. Because of your generous donations, we were able to pay off all our medical expenses. The relief of not having this burden over us has given me a chance to concentrate on fighting this terrible disease. The number of donations was so overwhelming, there are too many to list and our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of you. We would like to say a special thank you to the Moose Lodge for hosting the event and all the volunteers who made it all happen. We truly love each and every one of you, and look forward to seeing you for years to come.
God bless, Steve and Cindy Bowhay
Lola Margaret (Kidd) Vogel March 30, 1923 - April 18th, 2018 Lola Margaret (Kidd) Vogel, age 95, passed away from natural causes on April 18th, 2018 in Houston, Texas. She had resided in assisted living near her younger daughter for the past few years. Lola was born to James W. and Lulu M. (Zabel) Kidd, in Havre, Montana on March 30, 1923. She lived her school years on a homestead farm near Gildford, MT, where she graduated from high school. In 1947 she married a WWII Veteran from Kremlin, MT, Edmund A. Vogel. They honeymooned to Juneau, Alaska, which became their home, and where their four children were born. A dozen years later, she and her family moved to Haines, AK; she lived there until she moved to Houston, TX. Lola was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes and other fabric goods for family and friends. In Haines, she joined the Homemakers Club and two quilt groups, and was involved with the formation of the SE Alaska State Fair. In Juneau, she joined the Resurrection Lutheran Church, and attended the Presbyterian Church while in Haines. Her continued interest in new developments near home would result in never saying “no” to a drive to the country, even Canada. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, brother Allan Kidd, husband Edmund, and son Rex. She is survived by her sister Jean Knapp of Columbus, NE; daughters Judy (Rich) Bryan of Irving, TX and Susan (Brian) Cudnik of Houston, TX; son David (Jeanie) Vogel of Skagway, AK; four grandchildren and three great-grandsons; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorials in Lola’s name may be given to Hospice of Haines, PO Box 1034 Haines, AK 99827. Family may be contacted at: Dave Vogel, PO Box 351, Skagway, AK 99840. Funeral service was held 28 April, 2018, at Haines Presbyterian Church, Haines, Alaska. Burial was at Jones Point Cemetery, Haines, Alaska.
