Catherine Dyni Kollin 1938-2018 Longtime Juneau resident Catherine Dyni Kollin passed away on June 5, 2018. The youngest of four daughters, she was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1938. Her parents, Ida Laamanen and Daniel Dyni, were Finnish immigrants who first settled in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and later moved to the Detroit area. Catherine earned a nursing degree from the University of Michigan in 1960. She moved from Ann Arbor to Juneau with her family in 1971 where she worked at Bartlett Memorial Hospital until her retirement as Director of Nursing in 1997. Cathy enjoyed the outdoors and loved travelling with her family. In the early 1960s, she lived for four years in Germany where her husband was stationed and her two oldest children were born. She loved the water and sailed the Inside Passage from Seattle to Juneau in a 26-foot boat named Sisu. In her 70th year, she rode a camel in Egypt and sailed the Nile River. She also loved road trips and traveled extensively in the western U.S. Cathy had an unmatched sense of humor, was a gifted fiber artist, and was a dedicated member of her church. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, her two grandchildren, her oldest sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, July 8, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 4212 Mendenhall Loop Road. The service will immediately follow the 9:30 a.m. worship service (at approximately 10:30 a.m.). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 34859, Juneau, AK 99803.
Collier B. Flory August 31st, 1951- May 17th, 2018 Collier B. Flory, aptly named after P.F. Collier’s encyclopedia, died on Thursday, May 17th, 2018, at the age of 66. He possessed a kind, helpful, intelligence that surely made the encyclopedia proud; nevertheless, the family fondly called him Collie, and that’s what stuck. His likeness to his namesake was evident at a young age, as Collie could often be coerced by his younger siblings into using his way with words to spin magnificent bedtime tales. The kids would pile onto the bottom of the bunk beds, and his story would unfold. The main character would be a rabbit, dog, bear, or some other animal, vividly described with all the appropriate characteristic, habits and behaviors. Without fail, the character would be an upstanding hero, always named, “Little Blackie”. Little Blackie would proceed to accomplish some great deed, win an epic battle, or perform a daring rescue. Every time, the story would be followed by, “The End”, and no amount of begging ever resulted in any encore. Collie was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, on August 31st, 1951. The Flory family moved a couple months before Collie’s 6th birthday to Southeast Alaska. They lived in two different logging camps, spent a few years in Sitka, and eventually moved to Juneau, where he would spend most of his life. Although one leg was ever shorter than the other, following a complicated break while playing Little League, Collie set a record running track at JDHS; a record he proudly held unbroken for many years. He excelled at academics, enjoyed chess, and spent many hours preparing for college. After high school graduation, a disability prevented from pursuing the career in physics he had desired, and although he tried several times to attend college, he was unable to attain any degree. Collie enjoyed all people, but especially his parents, his siblings and their mates, and his nieces and nephews. When the Flory crew was still large and centralized, Collie was at
his happiest. His joyful expression was one-of-akind, a cartoonish smile typically followed by a distinct laugh, more of a big “hehehehe” than a “haha”, always delivered with a mischievous twinkle of the eye, and usually accompanied by a literal slap of the knee. Life was never the same after the cocoon of his familial home disappeared with the death of his parents. He had many adventures seeking to recreate that warmth, spending time in the Anchor Point/Homer area, Haines, and Roseburg, OR, but always ending up back in Juneau. Flying by the seat of his pants, he found something exhilarating in all of these sojourns, gaining friendships and “battle scars” along the way. Always, he believed in the goodness of others, and that attitude was returned in kind. He never failed to extend a helping hand to others, no matter how destitute he was, and people often responded in kind. His final journey was a happy romp to visit his brother in Mohave Valley, AZ, where kidney failure abruptly ended his life. He is greatly missed already. Many thanks on his behalf are owed in particular to the Bergman Hotel, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Salvation Army-Juneau Corps, and Southeast Alaska Food Bank, as well as other local food pantries. Much gratitude to Dr. Standerwick and her staff, for the excellent medical care you gave Collie these past several years. Every visit to Southeast Medical Clinic was cause for celebration, as he was left after each appointment with a warm feeling that you genuinely cared about him; he considered you family. Collie is survived by his aunts Charlotte Langsev and Adriana Rivenbark; uncles Henry Vanderveldt and Jimmy Mooney; siblings Frank Flory and Jan Flory (Jerry Owens); sister-in-law Lisa Flory; nephews Zach Owens and Jack Flory; nieces Selina Sinner and Jordan Flory; many cousins; and among other close friends, Lily and Cheryl. There will be no services, and no encore. The End.
