COMPARATHONS Ellen and I attended a couples yoga retreat at the Shambhala Mountain Center in Colorado a few years ago. It was a wonderful weekend full of insight and one thing our instructor said particularly stands out for me. “More flexibility doesn’t equal more spirituality.” Whether it’s a yoga practice, strength training, running or even a vocation, the intrinsic value is in the doing, not in how well we do it compared to anyone else. For many of us, the comparison is often between how we feel we are doing something and a preconceived notion of how well we should be doing it. To whatever degree we can give up our “comparathons,” the more we can appreciate ourselves and our experiences..
Frances (Fran) Martin May 8, 1958 - February 13, 2018
Fran passed away in Juneau on February 13, 2018 after dealing with various medical issues. She was born in New York and brought to Juneau at a very young age. She called Juneau home for her entire life. Fran graduated from JuneauDouglas High School in 1976 and began working for the US. Forest Service in the business department. For 40 years Fran was fixture in the daily operations of the Juneau Ranger District. She started working in the Federal Building, moving to the valley office on Old Dairy Road and then to the Back Loop Road. In her later years she was involved with overseeing the use and billing of tourism activities at Mendenhall Glacier. Fran evolved into the district “Den Mom” before retiring in 2016. Fran’s fondest love was always her pets. She was most at ease with people talking about animals and connected best with those
whose pets were part of the family. Fran’s pets came in the way of horses at a younger age and her dogs Ginger and Sally-Jo later in life. Everyone that knew Fran will remember her kind, quiet smile, her attention to detail and proud spirit. Fran was preceded in death by her mother, Betty and father, Lloyd. Surviving relatives include Uncles Michael Martin and Leonard Martin, cousins Merry Fischer (Bill) and Pamela Martin, all from Washington State. Condolences to the Family can be sent to Merry Fischer 499 Salal St., Oak Harbor, WA 98277. In lieu of flowers, donations “In Memory of Fran Martin” can be sent to the Gastineau Humane Society 7705 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801; or on line at www.ghspets.org/donate. A graveside service in Juneau is planned for the spring.
