Chan Scott Valentine October 15, 1985 - February 21, 2018
Juneau resident Chan Scott Valentine, 32, passed away February 21, 2018, during his brief battle with brain cancer. Chan was born October 15, 1985 in Corvallis, Oregon. He graduated from Crescent Valley High School in 2004, and moved to Juneau to attend college at the University of Alaska, Juneau, where he graduated with a degree in Biology in 2009. Chan fell in love with Alaska, and stayed there after college, working as a naturalist with the Juneau Raptor Center, at the Travelodge, and finally at Byte Computing as an IT specialist and administration support. During his years in Juneau, Chan befriended everyone he met. His humor and generosity of service were easily given, with no expectation of anything in return. Even after surviving a deadly plane crash in May of 2017, he continued to inspire and help those around him. When he wasn’t dreaming about tug boats or being in the water, Chan enjoyed rooting for the Washington Huskies with his family, camping, picking banjo, playing Madden Football on line, swapping stories with
friends, and devouring books. Chan seemed larger than life, and will be greatly missed by all. Chan is survived by his loving wife Amy, parents Scott and Theresa Valentine, brother Lewis and his wife Shweta, Aunts Candice Brown, Mary Taschner, Ann Melchior, Joan Huling; Uncles Thomas, John (Kim), Mike (Jayne), Pete (Cathy), and Paul (Robin) Melchior, many cousins and other relatives. He was preceeded in death by his grandparents, Lewis and Carolyn Valentine and Don and Lucy Melchior, his Uncle Frank Melchior, Uncle David Brown, and Cousins Robin and Steven Taschner. A memorial service will be held March 4th, at the Juneau Yacht Club from 3-6pm. A memorial will be planned for Corvallis, Oregon at a later date. People are encouraged to wear flannel, Xtratuf shoes, and/or Washington Husky gear. In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Amy Ruth Valentine, care of Alaska USA Bank, Juneau or the Brain and Behavior Research Fund at www.bbrfoundation.org

Laura Louise Fawcett August 26, 1955- March 7, 2018
Laura Louise Fawcett, (Ee-tu-see-yi), 62, Wooshkeetaan, of the Tóos’ Déx’i Hít (SHARK BACKBONE HOUSE), born at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital on August 26, 1955, walked into the forest ; March 7, 2018 in Haines. Cause of death is currently unknown. Laura is survived by her son; Leo “Rascal” Fawcett, whom she adored, (Marion), grandchildren, Graysen, Arianna Fawcett, sister; Kathleen “Kat” Willard, niece Natasha Phillips her daughter, Jaylynn Martin, nephew Jeremy Willard, (Helen), Barry “Bear-Bear” Willard, of Juneau, and twins Mallory & Jayvin Willard-Flanery of Ketchikan. She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Howard and Jessie Gray, paternal grandparents Lily “Tootsie” and John Fawcett Sr. of Hoonah, parents Lila and John Fawcett Jr. of Hoonah, brother John Fawcett III of Juneau, infant sister; Sheila Estelle Fawcett, and infant niece Laura Lila Willard. Auntie’s Harriet Roberts, Agnes Lindoff, Irene Austin, and Uncles, Eugene Fawcett, Gerald Gray, Howard Gray also went before her. She was a member of the Northern Light United Church in Juneau and shareholder in Sealaska, Goldbelt, and Huna Totem Corporations. She attended schools and was raised in Juneau. In 1975; she and Leo Jacobs had their son Leo “Rascal” Fawcett and they relocated to Haines in 1982. Until her health disallowed, she worked for Captains Choice Motel in Haines as a Housekeeper. Our sweet Laura loved her family, each one of them very much, especially her son whom she stayed with when she visited Juneau. Laura’s sister Kathleen refers to her as her
protector/ hero, in the 60’s. When in State foster care, before being reunited with they’re mama, many times Laura would take the abuse for Kathy, even shielding her from the unspeakable. The sisters would talk for hours together and on the phone over the years about the experience, trying with all their might to heal from it. Kathy lovingly credits her sister Laura for her opportunity (by lessening Historical Trauma) to grow up to be a successful, sober, honest, and sane person. Laura will also be remembered for loving cats. She had many over the years, lovingly naming them and giving them the best of care. She had her own sense of style, from the 70’s. She loved popsicles, frozen raspberries and potato chips. Music was very important to her and the first time she bought a record player, the ‘45’ she played was “It’s Now or Never” by Elvis Presley. She was named by her dad after a song called “Laura” by Frank Sinatra and she loved listening to Heart, Sly and the Family Stone, The Pointer Sisters, Santana, and Led Zeppelin, (at full volume if you don’t mind). A Memorial Service for our beloved Laura is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 3:00 pm at Juneau Glacier Valley Church of God 8497 Thunder Mountain Road Juneau, Alaska and will be laid to rest near our Mama here in Juneau in the spring. Laura’s family extends a huge Gul-NashCheesh for donations, food, visits, phone calls, and condolences we have, and continue to receive. Main contacts are sister Kathleen C. Willard, and niece Natasha Phillips. Cards may be mailed to PO Box 34202 Juneau, Alaska 99803.
