擁有都市規劃及平面設計的雙重背景,讓我在

思考上理性與感性兼具。大學時主修都市計劃 學習到的規劃分析、策略思考及問題解決等邏

輯的訓練,皆成為工作後提案的基礎,然而長 期以來對於平面設計的熱愛,我在大學時積極

累積相關設計經驗(擔任系會美宣、工讀等)並 於畢業後從事視覺設計工作,接著前往英國就

讀平面設計碩士,在這一年當中我投入在資訊

圖像、字體和體驗設計的學習,同時也藉著到 Me × Learning

處旅行吸收每個城市獨特的美學,開啟我對平

面設計的更多期待,它可以是實驗的、功能性 的、商業的面貌,重點是背後的設計思考、研究 過程以及如何運用創意賦予作品相等的價值 並完整呈現給大眾。

Learning

To call myself a multi-disciplinary designer, I have both urban planning and visual communication background. During the four years training of being an urban planner, I have learned the skills such as critical analysis and research method, which helped gain the ability to think critically and plan logically. Most important of all, to view the issue comprehensively from trivial to massive scale. However, I have always been interested in the visual communication field, which can deliver the simple idea or information in more influential and aesthetic way. After few years of self-learning and relevant work experience, I applied the master degree of graphic design in Kingston University, known for its practical and research-based educating system. I dedicated myself to some specific area such as data visualization, typography, and visitor experience‌etc. After having been trained in this year, what influenced me the most is a thought on implementing design thinking to your own design process. To me it is more systematic to conceptualize your work by developing your way of thinking(Discover, Define, Design and Deliver). I believe that the conscious effort is necessary to impose a meaningful order on my design. Last but not least, having an experimental heart and open mind is the must have.

Working

When working as a visual designer for museum exhibition, I found there are many potential in the form of graphic design. Besides visualizing the exhibition content materials into graphics precisely, the connection between graphics and environment is required. I think what we created was not only unique atmosphere to catch viewers’ eyes, but an appealing narrative to interactive with them. Being through the several projects I have realized that the persistence in detail and negotiation both play crucial parts to accomplish a perfect work. For my further career, I hope I can be more than just a graphic designer. What I aim for is to use my design skill and knowledge as a tool to raise public awareness or even to give a better solution to those urban issues that I have been concerned about, for instance, place making, community service, sustainable development and social design. It might be worked as series of events, a temporary exhibition, or a workshop. I look forward to collaborating with people from different disciplinary, aspiring to create more possibilities to connect design to the people and our environment.

The persistence in detail and negotiation both play crucial parts to accomplish a perfect work.

HEAR HERE “Hear Here� was made by series of animated posters that turned the dynamic urban soundscape into graphics and gave way to re-experience the city through hearing. This project praise hearing as an everyday practice and wish to reform a relationship with people and place.

Explore Portfolio 2016

To explore the dynamic of urban soundscape, I choose to focus on the public open spaces, which is like a micro society contains various kinds of activities. Then I used different approach to record the sound in London, one was taking the soundwalk and another was to record at the randomly picked place.

I create the graphic symbols represent each character of the soundscape, enabling vistors to record our aural environment. The line represent the Nature and Transportation. The geometric shape symbolize the sound mark that might have the distincct quality, such as human, animal, machanic...The intensity of sound varies from the size of the shape.

The sonorous picture of the street was a dynamic mixture of manmade, machine, music sound blending all together. The hubbub of the rumbling cars, speedy crosswalk signals and hustling from the indoor were masked by the melodic line from the street performer. Few chatters of the pedestrians and their hasty steps.

17: 27pm Overwhelming, intensive, endless The underground is a space of such hyperbolic sounding. The journey began from the symbolic announcement. (00’3) The doors shut rapidly with the hasty, continuous signaling. Then the massive echo thread through the tunnel along with a series of shrill frictions. I could feel the speed of movement by the propagating vibration, the sound moved into the space and replace it with its own compounded and repeating energy. Few conversations were continuing. Trivial sound of flipping paper came after another.

South bank 09 : 20am

Unexpected, calm, secure Every sound can be perceived clearly here. The continuous flow of streams steadily spread out as a background sound. The cawing of a raven suddenly broke the silence, then came after the chorus of three different species of birds. A weak piercing sound of friction came from far away. The moderate speed of padding. A bird sang again.

Bar at night 21: 30 pm

The sound mainly came from the bar, countless of conversations, laughters with loud voice went on at the same time. The tinkle of glass on glass. A woman was chatting with her friends. A fainted sirens whizzing from distance.

Re- Experience

Hear Here | explore the city soundscape

The animated posters will be installed at where it was originally recorded. They are hidden in the city intended to raise people’s curiosity and start to explore the city. In order to give the information about the Hear Here to the public, I designed a leaflet with the map and the introduction of the project. With the assistance of it, the audience explore the installation more easily and form a relationships with people and places.

FORM OF O This is an experiment of using different materials to create circular shape. The form starts from point to surface. These works are classified into eight categories each focusing on different aspects of exploration, including texture,accumulation,concentric, swirl, radiation, burning, sphere and time. Each category has series of experiments that testify from 2dimension to 3dimesion.

The circulation of the plants can be seen as a micro city, which is fundamentally composed by people, land, transportation. This can be analogy of cells, roots, stems and leaves. The main concept is to combine the geographical data with the form of plants. Choosing what data to present and correspond them in the right form is the challenge of this project.

Concept

Biagrams | organic information design

Circles is the most common shape in either regular or organic form. I was obsessed with those organic circular shape espcially the plant stem. The vascular bundle plays an crucial part to transmit the nutrient that plants need for surviving. This complex system is dynamic and full of potential. These investigation inspire me to visualize the data with natural form rather than the conventional pie chart.

Annual rings have the meaning of time, and the size of rings is increasing gradually by every year.

Branch diagram can be categorized in a part of dendropgram. It can reveal the hierarchy of the data.

I list the numeber of population and the number in each age group in Taiwan every five- year period from 1905 to 2015. I choose nearly a hundred year time spand in order show the change from broader perspective.

Lively Branch I choose to give more general geographic information such as our land use category. It gives an objective knowledge of how we use our land and have more connection to other theme I want to address, simply focusing on the relationship between people and land.

BOUNDLESS CITY In this project I want to focus on the connectivity of Taipei and present it in different aspects. One is the public transportation and the other is the free wifi. Both of them are making Taipei be more boundless.

Concept

I choose Taipei as my subject. Then I start to think about what will be come to mind when we talk about Taipei. The mood board on the right side shows the things that are unique and symbolic. To me, Taipei is a city of connection and convenience. By the well-constructed infrastructure. You can travel the city simply by the public transportation and there are hundreds of free wifi hotspots for you to surf the internet.


Concept I checkout the map of metro station (MRT) and city bkie station (Youbike) in Taipei. There are 220 bike station and 91 metro stations at the present. They are distributed all the metropolitan area. I want to identify the right location of every station and layer them to show not only the high density of the public transoport, but the connectivities of them.

Concept

Taipei is one of the most connected city in the world. The free wifi networks is applicable to all and is not limited to Taipei citizens. Whether a citizen or a tourist can take adventage of this public facility. The wireless network enable Taipei become more bounless. I am inspired by the composing line of the complex network, expressing the connection and tension, so I decide to use lines as my main visual element. To make a typography centered poster.

THE MAGIC OF PLANTS The exhibition “The Magic of Plants” provides a better understanding of plant-life and plant behavior. To through a magical illustrations in plant morphology, showing the plant in order to survive and multiply like “magic” as amazing shape and behaviour evolution.

Brochure design The cover of the leaflet is a clarendon-shaped die-cut to reveal Rafflesia, the spotlight of this exhibition.The content page is designed as a riddle game to test the visitor how much they learn from the exhibition. The interactive part is on the back of the leaflet, you can scratch it and get a piece of blessing.

Exhibition Identity The exhibition has two episode, the first part is about plants’ surviving and the second part is about breending. The grass-green is the main color in the first episode representing a new life and energy.

Exhibition Identity The rose color is used in second episode to symbolize romantic of flowers. To correspond the main visual style, We use the hand illustration and the low saturation color to emphasize the vintage and mysteric feeling.

AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE The major 921 Earthquake that occurred at the end of the 20th Century in 1999 not only caused dramatic changes in Taiwan’s environment, it also brought about complex contemplations about aspects of society, culture, and the economy. To reflect the power that the earthquake brings, I use the extra bold typography as well as the big crack in the main visual design. Added with some geometrys to symbolize the fragments by the earthquake.

Section graphic This section is mainly about the calm before the earthquake with the biography counting down from 1990’s to the day that the disaster happened. We uses the shocking wave-like timeline to show the information and thesome daily objects to reproduce the scene at the time.

Section graphic This section record the reconstruction on multiple levels in the 15 years after the earthquake. Various issues triggered by the earthquake have also forced Taiwanese society to think about the interrelationships between humans, land, and culture.To emphasis some important issues and values , the enlarge photo and quotes are frequently being used.

Visitor experience The exhibition has four sections. They are “Texture lab”, “Slow bite”, Fa(s)t food“ and “Feeling map”. Each section encourages visitors to use their different senses to engage in the whole exhibition. I hope to provide a deep insight of the most common food we eat almost everyday, in a easy way.

This part shows how much resources had been used to make classic meal. It provides visitors with the knowing of where the ingredients come from and what kind of environmental issues it might bring.

The information about the calories and nutrients of fast food is shown in this area. By standing on a weighing scale, people could see how much weight will gain after eating the classic meal combo like Big mac, chips and a large size of coke continuosly for a month. It is a sweet reminder to those who order too much unconsciously.

Through the research of fast food, some researches indicated that fast food might effect pepole mind unconsciously, such as feeling time-stressed, anxious, impatient...So I put this interaction wall as a llittle survey by asking visitors how they feel when they have a mood for fast food and after they enjuy the meal. Link the emtion that you have before and after, in the end it might form a interesting map of people’s mind.

Product design I also design a multi-function backpack for this brand. The concept of the bag is to let the pets carry their stuff such as poop bag and snacks. It is customized so it could be one of their label too.

This project is a visual research of our urban streetscape. How people treat the blank facade or places with their desire or creativity become the main part of this book. After taking series of photos at different places, I retouched these photos to a totally clean and white. By making the sets of comparison, it encourages readers to feel the difference between the two. It is also interesting to see how people create their ideal urban spaces.
