Amen.

The Bible says…
“Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your father’s, and do not go to a rela=ve’s house when disaster strikes you. A neighbor nearby is be,er than a rela=ve far away.” Proverbs 27:10
Where will you be? Who will you be with?
1. We are not here to scare you. The Big One is bound to happen. We just don’t know when. 2. Earthquakes don’t kill. Falling objects are the ones that kill and hurt people. 3. We cannot stop earthquakes but we can minimize losses.
M.M.E.I.R.S. • Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (2004) • Funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) • Estimates: 33,500 deaths (0.3% of 9.9M). 113,600 injured (1.1% of population). 168,000 structures heavily damaged.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR HOUSE?

HOW SAFE IS YOUR HOUSE?
HOW TO CREATE A PLAN 1.  Imagine what may happen. Audit your risks. Assess your vulnerabilities. Fix what you can already fix. 2. Imagine what you will do. Where will you duck, cover and hold? How will you get out to a safer place? How will you contact your loved ones? How will you go to them?
HOW TO CREATE A PLAN 3. Imagine what you will need. Have a checklist of important items you will need to survive for at least 72 hours. 4. Plan with others in mind. Network with people who may be closest to you when disaster happens. Include them in your plans. Know how they can help you and how you can help them.
BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE
1. IDENTIFY SAFE SPOTS in the house or building. 2. CHECK your LPG. Fix leaks. 3. SECURE SHELVES and CABINETS. 4. CLEAR EXITS of heavy items. 5. LIST Emergency Numbers. 6. CREATE a Family Preparedness Plan. 7. KEEP CONTACT NUMBERS of family members, friends and parents. 8. PREPARE your Go Bag.
DURING THE EARTHQUAKE
1. DROP, COVER and HOLD. 2. STAY INSIDE un=l shaking stops. 3. FACE AWAY from windows and mirrors. 4. KEEP AWAY from things that may topple over. 5. WATCH OUT for falling objects. 6. DO NOT USE elevator.
AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
1. STAY CALM. Be prepared for aYershocks. 2. CHECK FOR INJURIES. Administer First Aid if able. Look for help if unable to provide First Aid. 1. CHECK FOR OBVIOUS DAMAGES. 2. BE CAREFUL in using electronic devices or LPG stove. 3. LISTEN to radio. 4. USE emergency supplies wisely.

ASSIGNMENTS
1. Come up with a Family Disaster Preparedness Plan. 2. Assess and fix vulnerable portions of the house. 3. Set up a Go Bag for every member of the family. © Junep Ocampo Oplan Ha=d Volunteers

1. Practice the Disaster Preparedness Plan within the house. 2. Practice the plan outside the house. 3. Practice the plan at night time. © Junep Ocampo Oplan Ha=d Volunteers
1. Come up with a School Disaster Preparedness Plan. 2. Assess and fix vulnerable portions of the school. 3. Ask all teachers and students to set up a Go Bag in the school. © Junep Ocampo Oplan Ha=d Volunteers
PUT IN THE PLAN 1. Names and contact details of teachers and students and their families. 2. Names and contact details of Team Leaders. 3. Evacuation procedure. 4. Evacuation site (and alternative), including map and directions on how to get to the site. 4. Reminder to stay calm.
1.  Practice the Disaster Preparedness Plan. 2. Prepare a School Continuity Plan and practice it. 3. Hold an Earthquake Drill and evaluate your plans.
1.  Integrate Disaster Consciousness into the subjects of all levels. 2. Involve Parents and Community Leaders in Disaster Preparedness. 3. Hold an EQ Drill with Parents and Community participation.
BEFORE THE DRILL 1. Post basic EQ and WVF facts on bulletin boards. Stress why it is important to be prepared. 2. Teach and practice the Drop, Cover and Hold. 3. Instruct students to prepare Go Bags in the school and their homes. 4. Come up with an EQ Evacuation Plan and inform students about it. Use Buddy System.
DURING THE DRILL 1. Students must already bring their Go Bags to the school. 2. Sound the buzzer. Announce the Drop, Cover and Hold. Continue sounding the buzzer for 1 minute. 3. When the buzzer stops, start evacuation procedure. 4. The sound of the buzzer will mean aftershocks. Drop, Cover and Hold again.

AFTER THE DRILL 1. Debrief everyone per level. Ask for feedback and reactions. Ask how they felt. 2. Review your EQ Preparedness Plan and schedule the next drill. At least 2 EQ Drills must be done every year, separate from fire drills. 3. Brainstorm ideas on how LJLC may deal with real issues if a real earthquake happens.
© Junep Ocampo Oplan Ha=d Volunteers
REAL ISSUES 1.  What if someone gets hurt? Designate a Medical Emergency Personnel and provide training and tools. Train senior students on first aid. 2. What if someone is left behind? Designate a Rescue Personnel and provide training and tools. 3. What if a structure collapses? Designate an Evacuation Leader who will continue evacuation while Rescue and Medical Personnels / Teams address the problem.
REAL ISSUES 4. What if the home of a student gets damaged and family members are in danger? 6. What if the earthquake happens at night? Who will check on the condition of the teachers and students and their families?
