The beginning of the project was the research about Islamic court yard geometry and their complex zoning patterns on its applied topology. Situating the opera house and the court yard in the enclosing thin layer of the existing buildings, the courtyard becomes the bridge of both existing residence complex and new program: opera house.
Islamic patterns are complex, repeating but not in the same way. Lines expand from one point and flow toward the other point and it seems continuously altering.
The Square next to the opera house incorporates the existing transportation context and people’s movement. Using the Islamic pattern as a weaving texture to provide multiple layers of program and the topology of landscape, the square becomes the transition of urban fabric to provide several scale of cultural performances.

The project uses parametric tools to explore variations of basic cell unit to figure the opera house topology. A series of different basic unit of cell structure starts to changing value of the basic cell and constructs different types of aggregations, which later varies to many. Basic unit contains the genesis of structural value, therefore, the variations of the unit cell structure maintains its structural property in its nature. In this unit aggregation, neighbouring two pots provides the initiative condition of theater spaces, and each of theater space has different axis keeping their connections.

This project serves as a reminder of the historical existence of the sea at the site and aims to converge and mingle the differing contexts.

The project site faces Dique 3 which obstructed the original urban axis of Buenos Aires. In contrast, the newly developed Puente de la Mujer created an extension of the Old City along the axis. To bring back the original character of the site, the roof paving pattern is designed as a rain water harvesting system and leads into a grey water reservoir. The reservoir located at the top of the atrium creates a dramatic skylight which serves as a reminder of the historical existence of the sea.

As a metaphor to Tango, pedestrian flow from Old City toward ‘Puente de la Mujer’ and ‘ARA Presidente Sarmiento’ is infused with characteristic male Tango movementes to become the base massing.

INTERIOR RENDER
This project site is located at the outer -most defensive layer of the old city from the sea. It is an ideal location to welcome people from the New City. In relation to the two different urban characters of the New and Old City, the project site has pedestrian flows with different natures. Buenos Aires is the origin of tango, an expression of the intimate relationship between a man and a woman. As a metaphor to tango, the exterior massing of the proposed new contemporary art museum mimics male tango movements while the interior atrium space resembles the female tango movement.

BOAT + BIKE CENTER

The site of this project is an abandoned dry dock in the Boston harbor. The decision to use the dry dock as an operable one provides a series of pathways for the users of the site. Shortcuts are revealed at low tide and at high tide the user is required to use paths under and around the building itself, which straddles over the dry dock.

Throughout history man has used technology not only to enhance his practical abilities but also to express his deeply rooted ideas, both material and immaterial, of the world he inhabits. These manifestations have evolved to provide for a rich repertoire of features and styles. Within them one can find examples of particular intensities with an artistic intent to heighten design effects through a seemingly excessive articulation of form, structure and pattern.

Design Finesse is used as both an investigative as well as an operative term. The first part of the research investigates historic precedents and seeks criteria to identify features and characteristics of finesse. The second part of the research is dedicated to the fabrication of a series of physical prototypes that test and apply the research by using contemporary design techniques.

Form-Active Systems offer an intuitive means of gaining direct and tangible knowledge for addressing architectural design problems with degrees of complexity typically beyond our capacity or desire to engage as designers. With these systems as a mechanism for research, this project establishes a rich territory in which Form, Force, and Matter are inherently imbricated in their conceptual domain while collectively asserting their agency within the design process. Approaching this conceptual terrain with an understanding that the elements of our systems of inquiry exist along an active continuum between the real and the virtual and investigating it through parallel methods of analog machines and physics-based simulation, we may effectively analyse the performative characteristics of Form-Active Systems, synthesize operative design strategies from this research, and redeploy these strategies through architectural prototypes capable of negotiating intrinsic and extrinsic forces across varying scales of application.
