CONCEPTUAL AND THEORETICAL PROJECT [2015]

Name — Junho choi Role of Collborative working[2persons] — Making the shape of butterfly-wing and frame, cutting drawing, arranging exhibition Supervisor — Yoon kyoo Jang Location — Exhibition Project date — 2 weeks - from 16. Dec. 2015 to 28. Dec. 2015 Junho Choi Portfolio

Currently, most designs based on biomimicry are limited to creating superficial appearances. This work expresses the fact that although a shape is created by the internal system, there is the limiting aspect that it cannot access the system hidden inside. In order to avoid being focused solely on the shape and to conduct research regarding the background and the system responsible for creating the shape, I chose the butterfly wing and examined the structural aspects as well as on the reasons why it is waterproof. Based on my findings, tracing paper was used as a waterproof material for the expression. The project involved implementing the architecture and the interior with the structure found by examining the waterproof properties of the butterfly wing with a microscope, and by incorporating the material characteristics and the system concept on planar drawing. In order to express the dynamics that mimic the flapping in the project outcome, the structure of the butterfly wing was expressed on drawings, 3–4 sheets of which were layered, and each direction was expressed according to the butterfly wing’s line of movement.

This project is proposed to transform the fundamental paradigm held by existing countries, cities, and surrounding environments. The primary production sectors provided by existing cities, roads, and farms are linked with simple linear elements, causing substantial costs and a number of inefficient aspects. To resolve this issue, I took a scenario approach for an architect to provide alternatives.

The place where people make farms can be determined by the needs from people for staying alive , especially foods.

_ Self organization of politics and boundaries _ Just one facility function all system _ Traffic line, walking line and moving pattern derive from building

Vertical and horizontal farms can produce food for people who live in the vertical farm building or live near the farm building.

With these three scenarios, I narrowed the scope of the project to create a building that acts as a link between urban and rural areas. Accordingly, I took into consideration elements such as farm building, connecting system, module, environment, and expanding effect and tried to compress them into a single architectural structure.

CONCEPTUAL AND THEORETICAL PROJECT [2015]

Architecture is an applied science that involves a number of comprehensive academic fields. I am inclined to ask if buildings are being built in restrictive manners due to the techniques, technologies, and materials used in conventional architectural structures.

Portfolio Detail image

Conceptual drawing work Facade of this model resembles a grid pattern in the city and the saw- toothed wheel is in a grid. This wheel represents the mechanic or biotic system. This system can make new paradigm in the area of architecture

Resistant to change Centralized Mono-cultural Fossil-fuel dependant Linear wasteful Simple Disconnected Mono-functional

Adopted to constant change Distributed Diverse Run on current solar income Close loop Zero waste Complex, Interconnected Symbiotic

I would like to claim that architecture is a system. As individual systems collaborate like sawtoothed wheels to make a larger entity work, every form of architecture has these systems. The intention of this work is to express my desire to find such systems for application in not only architecture but also other academic fields. Every shape is created by adapting to the environment and is a result of the law of survival of the fittest designed to maximize one’s functionality. Biomimicry is imitating one system and applying it to another. I intend to integrate biomimicry into architecture. I looked for a biomimicry material that can be best utilized in architecture and found the spider web system. I performed research on various experimental results to implement the spider web system as an architectural element. I decided to conduct this project to propose a novel method for replacing buildings primarily consisting of conventional RC structures.

Spider silks are composite materials with often complex micro structures. The surprising sophistication of spider silks and spinning technologies makes it imperative for us to understand both material and manufacturing in nature before embarking on the commercialization of biotechnologically modified silk dope. Especially for architecture, it can easily make different structures compared to an ordinary building. Left side is a model constructed in threads. This work involved gathering ideas from individuals regarding the statement "The initial convulsion of love is necessarily founded on ignorance." Among them, seven most popular words were selected and the abstract words were converted into shapes and figures using big data. I performed Google image searches to compile images associated with each word and overlapped the images to specify average shapes and colors. The outcome was once again overlapped inside each frame so that the overall image could be exposed through overlapping. The naturally extracted outcome was presented in diverse colors and shapes, expressing my intention of demonstrating that a wide range of results can be obtained from a combination of multiple academic fields.

DUCT + WALL BUILDING EXPERIMENTAL ARCHITECTURE PROJECT [2013]

Name — Junho choi Kookmin university of Seoul — B.Arch 3rd year academic Project Supervisor — Ki hyun Ahn Function — Museum or Hospital Period — 3 months - from Mar. 2013 to May. 2013

Junho Choi Portfolio

This is an important project that must precede the integration of fusion academics and architecture. A substantial amount of research was required on building systems. After conducting multiple surveys on the elements that constitute an architectural structure as well as on unnecessary functions, I decided to conduct the project by completing a building with only two elements. Because the project had to be completed with the two elements of the building, the premises were a structure that required strength and an element specialized for functionality. I chose the duct and the wall for the project. Taking into consideration that the two elements are associated with two different academic fields under architecture, a completely new outcome was elicited in choosing two elements that are experimental and non-converging in regards to proposing the first fusion building, allowing me to propose an architectural structure capable of performing innovative and special functions.

Among aforementioned integrations between fusion academics and architecture, this work is currently in progress and involves digitizing and visualizing the statement “Every form of nature is a result of cause and effect” amid the integration between digital and architecture. A typical fan is used to express the characteristics of natural wind and sand is used to represent the process of scattering and flying away. The installation reminds us that all of the shapes in Grand Canyon caused by weathering are not outcome of chance but formed by the direction and the intensity of the wind. Furthermore, all of the things in nature and their shapes are created by the system of cause and effect.

EXTENSION AND NEW CONSTRUCT DORMITORY PROJECT [2013]

Name — Junho choi Kookmin university of Seoul — B.Arch 3rd year academic Project Supervisor — Yoon gyoo Jang Location — Dormitory in Kookmin university Period — 3 months - from Sep. 2013 to Nov. 2013

Junho Choi Portfolio

This project involved building a dormitory for foreigners against the diverse cultural backdrop of foreign students. The cultural differences stem from different environmental aspects. The objective of the project was to integrate and harmonize cultural differences. Due to the site’s substantial differences in elevation, positional aspects between horizontal and vertical planes were taken into consideration, and I decided to expand the existing dormitory and also build a new one. Furthermore, I created a new space in the center for various cultures to intermingle. The work goes beyond the simple notion of culture and presents an architectural expression of cultural exchanges, similar to several medium-scale subcultures converging together to create a new subculture. The project takes the initiative of integrating cultures by creating a space of opportunities, where multiple cultures can harmonize and communicate.
