Institute for People and Technology
Message from the Director This year has been one of great vision for the Institute for People and Technology. We nearly doubled our research revenue, surpassing $18 million last year, and we substantially increased the number of Georgia Tech faculty working with our partners, research facilities and student programs. Much of our revenue growth came from our health systems portfolio of research as we continue to work with a growing set of state, federal, non-profit and corporate partners. We responded to this growth with the creation of a new and unique research infrastructure for health systems data analysis and the creation of our new Health IT Showcase. We also demonstrated our leadership in Health IT at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference — IPaT was the only academic institution invited to the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase. Another area of growth is our partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, announced in 2012, that has already inspired solutions that will improve the lives of children and their families. For example, one of our award-winning papers provided clinical evidence for the use of mobile health approaches to improve pediatric asthma care. We launched two new community laboratories this past year. Our campus community is flourishing with the development of GT Journey, helping Georgia Tech students design applications, access data, and create web services to improve the GT campus and surrounding community. In partnership with GTRNOC, we’ve already released some of the top entries as services for the GT campus. Going further, our newly announced partnership with Midtown Alliance will allow us to support the larger Midtown Atlanta community with innovative approaches for improving the “live, work, play” experiences of our neighbors. These brief comments are just a snapshot of our many noteworthy achievements over the past year, and at the center of it all is people. IPaT’s mission is to build a future with more human-centered technology, and we hope you will continue to explore with us the convergence of people and technology.

2014 Projects and Events Looking Back: 2013 People and Technology Forum Recap
The 2013 Georgia Tech People and Technology Forum, held November 5-6, drew over 300 attendees and featured keynote speeches and panel discussions on “The Future of Being Human.” Visitors included representatives from partners such as Panasonic, Turner Broadcasting, Google, AT&T Mobility, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Deloitte, Cisco, Emory University, Hitachi, and Cox Communications.
Interoperability and Integration Innovation Lab Wins Phoenix Award
Georgia Tech recently became the first university to receive the Phoenix Award from the Health IT Leadership Summit. The Award was given for support of innovative health IT based education, research and commercialization at its Interoperability and Integration Innovation Lab, one of the living labs of the Institute for People and Technology. Stephen Fleming, Vice President and Executive Director of the Enterprise Innovation Institute, which manages the lab, accepted the award November 12 at the 4th Annual Health IT Leadership Summit in Atlanta. The I3L is the realization of a fiveyear vision for driving healthcare transformation through advanced technologies. The lab provides a vendor-neutral test bed for exchanging health information among disparate electronic health records systems and other platforms, including patient-facing mobile tools.
Health IT Leader Excited About New Role
Georgia Tech has welcomed a new associate vice president for Health IT. Margaret Wagner Dahl started her new position earlier this month, which includes working closely with IPaT. Her goal is to develop and expand Georgia Tech’s efforts within the health information technology industry. Dahl will also oversee educational, consulting and other services to bolster economic development.
Reinventing the Rules of Storytelling
This past summer, as he worked to put together a talk on human creativity, IPaT expert and computer scientist Mark Riedl realized he had run full tilt into one of the oldest obstacles to said creativity—writer’s block. Riedl, head of Georgia Tech’s Entertainment Intelligence Lab, had been invited by organizers of the 2013 Atlanta TEDx Peachtree Conference to discuss his work and its implications at the event. Though he was accustomed to explaining his research to academic audiences, he realized he was having difficulty creating a presentation for the event. “As an academic, one is interested in giving talks—but TEDx is a very different kind of talk,” Riedl states. “Inspiring people to do things and take action. I find that kind of presentation very challenging.” This difficulty held particular irony for Riedl, given that his group has spent much of the past few years exploring the intersection between storytelling and artificial intelligence. In the process, the EIL has gained significant insight into narrative and affective states, and developed systems that have demonstrated the ability to design tales and games. But in the end, it took old-fashioned human persistence and elbow grease to assemble a presentation which, he ruefully notes, “took me several months to put together.”
IPaT Hosts Local Designers and Developers for Google Glass Design Sprint on Urban Storytelling On February 6th, the Institute for People and Technology joined with the Google Glass Developer Relations team to hold the first ever Google Glass Design Sprint at Georgia Tech. The event brought together over 100 local designers, developers, students, and faculty members in the IPaT offices to explore how Glass could be used to tell the story of Midtown Atlanta. The event was hosted in partnership with Midtown Alliance as part of the ongoing Midtown Buzz project, an experiment in mobile innovation focused on engaging urban communities. Midtown Buzz includes mobile platform and app development, open-source data curation, contextually aware environments, social navigation (via authentic tastemaker personas to ‘feel like a local’), developer workshops, hackathons, trials, needs assessments and the creation of a Live-WorkPlay “Laboratory” for exploring the potential of media technologies in creating a climate for continual innovation.
Spring 2014 CIC: Keeping Us Connected Through Technology A Google Glass application designed to caption for the deaf or hard of hearing won both the Connected Home and People’s Choice awards at the 10th edition of the Convergence Innovation Competition. “We’re totally surprised, especially by the People’s Choice Award,” said Rob Solomon, one of the creators of Captioning on Glass. “Everyone was doing such amazing projects at this competition, so to receive an award from your peers is the most meaningful, but of course we’re happy to win Connected Home as well. We hope that this has an impact on people’s lives in the future.” Captioning on Glass is for people who have speech capabilities, but have difficulty hearing every word in a conversation. The app is expected to be available in the Google Glassware store in a couple of months. CIC winners were selected in additional categories during a live demonstration and judging event at the Institute for People and Technology.
IPaT Represents Georgia Tech at World’s Largest Health IT Conference Last month, IPaT represented Georgia Tech research in health systems at the 2014 Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida. This year’s keynote speakers included former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini. The conference attracted more than 37,000 healthcare IT professionals, clinicians, executives and vendors from around the world.
Showing and Sharing at the Educator Showcase Georgia educators shared how they’re integrating technology into their classrooms at the 2014 Educator Showcase. The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and IPaT hosted the event which attracted more than 60 educators (SEE: photos from the showcase). They presented posters outlining their technology initiatives in the classroom. A panel discussion of school technology leaders focused on contemporary education and learning.
Georgia Tech at the Forefront of the Internet of Things For more than 10 years, tech experts have predicted the Internet of Things (IoT) - small, usually hidden computers attached to objects. The devices sense and transmit data about the environment or offer new ways of controlling it. IoT has always been constrained by two things: range and longevity. Technology such as wi-fi doesn’t work under appliances like dishwashers, refrigerators or washing machines because the signal has to transmit through the air back to a hub. Recently though, with new enabling technologies, the IoT and connected home industries have exploded. Universities are also on board, including Georgia Tech. Tech is at the forefront of the IoT trend with the development of WallyHome. The technology was first researched at Georgia Tech’s Aware Home by College of Computing Professor Dr. Gregory Abowd, and his PhD students Shwetak Patel and Erich Stuntebeck.
Tennenbaum Institute at Georgia Tech Hosts Workshop on Healthcare Transformation On March 5th, the Tennenbaum Institute hosted Georgia Tech’s first ever workshop on Healthcare Transformation Through Analytics at the Global Learning Center. The event brought together key thought leaders from nationally recognized leading edge health organizations, who brought deep knowledge and experience in healthcare big data and analytics. This was the first time that health informatics faculty from all of the major medical schools in the region, including Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Georgia Regents University, have convened.
IPaT Hosts Mobile Storytelling Workshop, Hackathon More than 40 people from Atlanta’s technology and creative communities attended the Midtown Mobile Storytelling Workshop, which highlighted four case studies to broaden our idea of “what’s a story” and “what’s mobile.” There were also brainstorming sessions on: history/cultural heritage, arts, health/fitness, games, civic engagement, community building and commercial. Midtown Buzz is an experiment traditional and emerging mobile media.
