Project Architect Junlin Jiang, Chenglong Wang, Lingchen Liu Pingyao, Shanxi Province, China 10,722m2 7,330m2 Design in-progress
Participated in Schematic Design/Design Development Designed refurbishment of old building/interior and facade of added space/building plan This site was once occupied by a sugar factory, but now it is abandoned. In order to show its old glorious production scenes to citizens, we want to refurbish it and add interesting spaces to it. And later it may hold some local exibitions like Pingyao Photography Festival. Currently, most industrial buildings are refurbished in comparation between modern and past, to show their life span from past to now. However, in this project, I'm trying to compare the abandoned old structure against a sense of future. Then it will always show its character of futureness.
SITE& IMAGES
The Sugar Factory located in rural area in Pingyao, Shanxi Province, China, and surrounded by planting fields. I think it mainly because the factory could be both far away from cities and adjacent to raw ingredients. There are two methods in creating dialogue between the old ones and the newly built ones. The one is to CLONE the old buildings with new materials and put them together, the other one is to INVADE the old structure with something from future.
1.CLONE
2.INVADE
INVADE is a word looks no positive. However, to some extent, collision between civilizations always brings changes and development. In this project, the sense of future could active these old industrial stuctures, back to life. Moreover, it will provide citizens with an interesting place to have entertainment. Thus other industrial zones may copy this method and revive instead of being abandoned.
CLONE is a word traditionally used in biology, but here, it is used on architectures. By cloning some buildings, left behind by their former users, into fancy ones, It shows that these old ones could live longer than they supposed to do. Furthermore, not limit to just copying, the newly produced ones will own their unique charactors. It might be a new way to induce the revival of the abandoned industorial zones.

Both office rooms and coffee house are designed adjacent to an old building. While the office rooms are planed the same to the old storage house on their sizes of doors and windows, the coffee house looks more like a landscape architecture which will be fancier than the old weight house. Compared to the old building, the new office room will be built with fair-face concrete and windowed large glasses, and the coffee house with steel structure. Both architectures will show their sense of future in reflecting the comparation between the newer and previous one through specular metal plate.

all columns, floors and voids, but also makes good use of them. Meanwhile, the new addtion parts, the exibition hall in 3rd floor, encloses a court yard, but people can still see through it, making connection between the building and the rest of the factory. This court yard also let the sunlight reach the brick wall, creating an amazing scene when people standing around windows.

STAIRS
There are two stairs in this plan. The one is previously existing stair in old building, the other one is newly added. Both of them are coated with specular metal plates so they look like connections between the future part and the reality part or between the future and the past, and they also remind people that stairs come down from a UFO when they touch the ground.
OFFICE BUILDING | Continious Lanscape Professional Work, Slow Architects, China Conceptual Design, SD, 2014 Role: Project Architect Team Member: Junlin Jiang, Chenglong Wang, Lingchen Liu, Rao Fu Location: Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, China 10,722m2 Site Area: Totel Area: 7,330m2 Status: In progressing Participated in Conceptual Design/ Skamatic Design Designed building plan& elevation/ landscape design The site of this project locates in a pharmacy industrial garden. Despite of its limited space, there is a river passing by, which gives this part of the site a sense of live. In fact, other parts of the garden are filled with concrete buildings, roads and only a few green space. Therefore, if shape the building and ground into a landscape, it would be good to the public. Moreover, this kind of gentle care to citizens is refered as the notion of pharmacy industries, that is the willing to cure diseases. While the beautiful views help maintain mental health, the medicines aim to cure physical diseases.
INTRODUCTION
Aiming to offer both employees and citizens a healthy life experence here, there are several procedures in polishing the shape of the building.
N
1.To make good use of the river band, space along it is opened for public. Then, citizens could get relax there, such as jogging, picnic, sunbathe, swimming, or even just sit and read. It's good for citizens' physical health here. 2.There is a max hight for buildings in this area. so new buildings could not be higher than others. Moreover, most buildings around here are 32m's height cubes as shown in picture. 3.The river changes its direction just ahead of the site, and this shape gives the site two coastal sides. If getting rid of center part of the building, it forms a courtyard, so that offices at the back of the building could also get access to the river view. This definitely could improve the employees' mental health, which is extremely important in China today that many employees in factories commit suicide because of saddness. Besides, courtyards are often used in traditional buildings so people would enjoy this. 4.Some part of the building could be stretched so that it could get close to the river, and some part could open space for its gate in order to provide visitors with a welcoming gesture.
ORIGINAL SITE
5.Since the landscape here is unique, it's interesting that vegetations could continue, not only along the river, on the platform, but also to the roof. All the green space forms a 3-layer landscape. Bringing down one part of the front part could make these layers successive. This shape also gives the building an iconic feature and distinguish itself from other buildings. Besides, its triangle shape allows sun light in courtyard even on the shortest day of the year. 6.To make connections between inside and outside of the courtyard, the bottom of the building should be transparent or void. When getting rid of most obstacles on the platform, this building turns itself a completely sculpture in which employees could work happily.
1.RESHAPE THE COASTAL AREA
2.MAX HIGHT
3.COURTYARD
4.CLOSE TO THE RIVER & OPEN SPACE FOR ENTRANCE
5.BRING DOWN FRONT PART& ICONIC FEATURE
6.CONNECTION
UNLIMITED PEDESTRIAL ROUTE It is the first priority rule in this project that visitors could walk or even bike through the site without any obstacal. At the same time, they could also enjoy various view changes vertically from the base level to the platform to the roof. The three layers make the pedestrial route interesting and attracting. Only at the base level, people could experence these changes.

There is a main route in roof garden, distinguishing itself from other passages with stone pavement, so people would recognize that this path could lead them to almost everywhere of this building. Besides, the shape of this building provides an excellent angle that people could acturally see these passages on the roof. And the directions of this main road correlates with building facade well, which is also embeded with triangle shaped glass curtain wall.

As sections above shown that this building is not only an office building as the client wants, but also combines leisure space, like roof gardens, and fitness space, like a gym center. I hope employees here could do their jobs happily, building their bodies after work and enjoy their lives, rahter than being stressful and sick to their work and projects.
COMMUNITY CLUB | Center of the residential area Professional Work, Zeybekoglu Nayman Associates, China Conceptual Design, SD, DD&CD, 2011 Role: Project Architect in Architecture(not in Interior or Landscape) Team Member: Junlin Jiang, Hui Dong, Luming Ning Location: Chongqing, China Totel Area: 3259m2 Status: completed Participated in Conceptual Design/Schematic Design/Design Development Designed building plans/elevations
This building locates in a heart place of Hongfu Residential Community, Chongqing. Its location reveals the important role of the club, that is a symble of the community and a center where residents could take a rest. I think this building should be modern as well as tranditional features, to give citizens an impression that this club is born with a sense of trandition as well as a feeling of cutting edge. Moreover, when looking from different angles, this architecture presents various features.
DESIGN BASIS
AXIS This area is in the center of Hongfu community, and it mainly use for commercial purpose. It connects two residential parts. There is a central plaza, a commercial block and a club, which serves as a sales center at the beginning.
city green space
The city of Chongqing is in mountainous area of Southwest China. The main mountains are Daba Shan and Wuling Shan. There are also rivers flowing by, such as Yangtze River, Jialing River and Wu River.
residential commercail
All the landscape and structures are regulated with two axes. One is generated from residential buildings, the other comes from the direction when people come into the central plaza, in other words, perpendicuar to the road on south.
There are pitched roofs and outdoor balconies in tranditional buildings. Because of its mountainous site, many buildings as a whole forms a special landscape, as pictures shown. So I abstract the shape of the roof and balcony to form a tranditional feeling.

The notion of Fengshui , meaning "wind& water", lies not only in single buildings but also in site selection of cities and urban design in tranditional cities. That people chose to live near lakes, rivers or occeans may simply because it was convenient for them to use water in ancient time, but this notion has affected residents deeply. They feel better when wittness water. These pictures are three cities lying among mountains and rivers, inculding Chongqing. Since water is so important to cities and people, why not provide people in Hongfu with water landscape and make them happy.

Glass is an interesting material, in that it could be both transparent from inside and reflective from outside at day time. On the upper level, the ceiling is so high, about 10 M on average, that visitors could enjoy big pictures through windows when swimming or yoga. At the same time, on the lower level, people in the glass cube could view a panorama of 270 degrees.

ROOFING
When looking from this side, more elements would show up, such as landscape, a glass cube and a pitched roof. Moreover, it will be much higher than seeing from the other side, so it looks as if the building would stand up. The lower part of the building serves as a resturant with a dancing pool. Almost all residents in Chongqing rely greatly on nice spicy food everyday, and they have an extremly high standard on spicy food and eating environment. This building provides them with both open spaces and private rooms to enjoy their dishes as well as spectacular views. In addition, there is also a large waiting area, where people could watch some singing or dancing show when waiting for their seats.
STRUCTURE
1
There is a special detail design in roof which makes the edge of roof much thinner. Tranditionally, there should be a parapet at the edge of the roof, but it would look too bold after packing with stone plates. To make it thinner, the concrete part of the roof extends out, so when packed with stone plates, it looks fancier.

Solo in this project including 3D modeling/Diagrams/Building plans, elevations, details This project locates in Daxing District, Beijing. It includes two schools, so the masterplan is supposed to be both connecting and seperating. This opinion could be achieved by a structure resembling a traditional LANG and ZHAN. Besides, a library resembled a feeling of TING and GE in ancient China. All together, these structures and buildings form new schools thriving from traditional building environment.
The Humble Administrator's Garden is famous for its masterplan and space among buildings, water and passages: buildings and corridors form spaces so natural that when people plant trees there they feel like in parks. At the same time, Beijing has developed into a city where seldom schools possess large area of vegetation. So in this site, creating a park school would make it attracting to citizens.
DESIGN BASIS & DEVELOPMENT
There are limitations on site. For one thing, there will be a hospital and a commercial center on north and east of the site. They normally are noisy and busy in traffic, so it would be inconvenient for kids to walk in or out school from this area. For another, it should be 2 school in this site that two entrances have to be seperated to ensure that there would not be a crush during moring and evening.

FEATURE 1: LIBRARY
亭当 亭居 1.STOPPED
ROOF
Libraries are so important in schools that they impart knowledge to students, therefore a confortable reading area which could be easily accessed become crucial.
SPACE PEOPLE
TING is quite important in traditional paintings of mountains. It often locates in upper part of a mountain or stands b e s i d e a lake or streams . Wh en people are obsessed with something interesting or beautiful, they would like to stop and watch. That's where TING came out. It provided visitors excellent place to appreaciate great views and take a break at the same time. So TING is not only a structure but also means stopped. Moreover, there are other meanings which came out of the original meaning, like well-balanced and erect.
亭
亭匀 亭决
TING
A TING or kiosk is a type of covered structure without surrounding walls and is a traditional part of Chinese architecture.
亭者,停也。亦人所停 集也。
TING, firstly, it means stopped. Poeple stop and gather, because they are obsessed.
阁斋 阁本 1.LIBRARY
GE,usually several storeys, was built
Now, combining TING and GE, this library shows an impressive feeling to kids and teachers. They could study there and also enjoy perfect views after reading.
亭立 亭秀 3.ERECT
As a result, it would be facinating if the library in this school serves as a function of TING, where students like the most. as libraries often in ancient China. It usually had wood screen but no concrete walls so that air could pass through the building and keep books cool and dry. GE also means people have much experence or knowledge.
2. WELL-BALANCED
BUILDING SCREEN

GE
A GE or pavilion is a type of building, which walls are often wooden screen and surrounded by balcony on each layer.
天禄阁,石渠阁,汉代 文津阁,文汇阁,清代
There are libraries in history, like TIANLU GE and SHIQU GE in Han dynasty(202-220 BC), also WENJIN GE and WENHUI GE in Qing dynasty(1644-1912)
2. CABINET

FEATURE 2: CORRIDOR
OPEN BUILDING PEOPLE
Since there are two schools here, connection and seperation of them become tricky. A passage structure deriving from LANG and ZHAN could sucessfully deal with this problem.
外廊 回廊
廊
1.OUTDOOR CORRIDOR
LANG
A LANG is a type of corridor covered by roof. There are many types of LANG, such as straight, curved and circled.
廊腰缦回,檐牙高啄。
Curved LANG reaches everywhere, and cornices lie high above the ground.
内廊 走廊 2. INDOOR CORRIDOR
LANG traditionally was set out of
buildings or adjacent to them. It is a semi-outdoor space which is popular in gardens and Siheyuan, even in north area where it could be extremly cold in winter. To some extent, close to nature appearently is more essential than keeping warm.
栈道 栈桥
ZHAN was used to connect places where people had difficulties to arrive, like they said, going to Sichuan province was much harder than flying to sky. ZHAN provided people with a narrow way hanging from mountains.
In lower level of the structure, it is a LANG, roofed by middle level structure as ZHAN. Students could also step on to the upper level to watch landscape from above. So it connects both schools. Interestingly, the shape of this structure also looks like a division line beteen them.

1.WAY
ZHAN
A ZHAN is a passway which stands aside a cliff. It depends on steel bars which are inserted into mountain rocks and on wooden plates which lie above the steel bars.

Walls of classroom are special here due to its thickness. For one thing, it could shade sunlight at noon when it is too bright, while letting it in in the afternoon when it becomes softer. For another, there are spaces in walls between windows vertically and horizontally. As a result, through central air conditioning room on the roof, fresh air could be led into each room by walls but by air duct which would increase total height of the building. Besides, other channels in walls could be used on electrical lines or rain water pipes seperately. This wall system could make the interior of classrooms clean.

Participated in Conceptual Design,SD Mainly on building plans/elevations/landscape design After the first work in this portfolio, the refurbishment of Pingyao old factory, the client decided to add a commercial area, which should be interesting and relating to this factory. It was a group work, I was mainly charged to design the centural part of the area, which was surrounded by pitched roof buildings, designed by other architects. When thinking about how to start this, the sugar reminded me that since its products are sugars that people eat everyday, it is a best theme to develop the project in this way.
MATERIALS & LANDSCAPE
Concrete is the main structural material, coated with steel wires or plywoods. While steel wire is inspired by white sugar cube, plywoods by brown cubes.
Some of the landscape is filled with pebbles and grass, where trees and flowers grow. There are tall and straight trees in outer space and smaller leafy flowering ones at inner part.
The white stone ground indicates an inner part of this area, like a backyard of these buildings. It creates a sense of surrounding, while other parts are quite open.
This area is seperated by a special stone material different from other commercial space in larger district. It is inspired by granulated sugar. More importantly, it strongly draws visitors' attention that here is the center of the commercial area, and that they can get into each interesting cubic building from here.

TWO BUILDING EXAMPLES
The left one is an exibition hall, in which a huge balloon is floating. It taks most of the space, leaving only 2 meters hight above ground. It is the ' haze ', which is affecting a wide range of cities in China. This exibition would cause a strong pressure on people under the balloon, which tells residents to protect the environment. The right one is a book store. With the development of internet commercial system, people could spend less money on buying book online. However, it caused a surge of collapsing on real book stores. In fact, reading in book stores is a wonderful experence , especially in a comfortable one. Readers coud sit on wooden floors to look at whatever books as they want. In fact, these cubic buildings are suitable for various commercial purposes other than an exibition hall or a book store. It could be a flower shop, a cafeteria or a customize clothes store.

This one names Hongbai, it was in the center of the earthquake, and the whole area was destroyed. We wanted to provide a public building for all residents there. It must be open, but tranditionally people like to set up walls and gates to an area. So it is a new thinking to design it this way in Hongbai. Due to a limited time, all projects must be finished in 2 years after the earthquake so that villagers could lead ordinary lives, so all buildings should be resistant to another earthquakes, easy to build and affordable.

WALL
The outdoor space provide people with a place to meet or exercise, like a playground . It gathers people naturally. Many Chinese public buildings are surrounded by walls, but it is definitely a conflict to the meaning of "public". Since the climate is relatively mild here, there is no need to build walls between outdoor and indoor space, neither does a lock . After it opened, many events were held here, and it seemed that people really like the building. Many of them even climbing up to the 3rd floor. It is impossible to get there if there was a gate of a lock on it. The Chinese words on this building was decorated by villagers themselves, and it said that they thanked all people who were willing to help them rebuild their village. It may seems strange, but it is a best way for them to show their gratefulness.

OUTDOOR SPACE
The plan devides this area into 3 different kinds of space: outdoor, indoor and semi-outdoor.
OUTDOOR SPACE
SEMI-OUTDOOR SPACE
Since there is no walls between lobby and outdoor space, visitors could see outdoor activities from inside of the building. As a result, there is an interaction between spaces. There is a skylight from the roof above the semi-outdoor space, and it lights up the inner space so it would be warmer to visitors. This is important in that people surviving from earthquake need special care, especially psychologically. Moreover, glasses prevent rainwater falling into this space, and it is interesting that people could still wittness drops of rain hit on the roof. And if it rains, many events could be held in this semi-outdoor space.

Participated in Conceptual Design,SD&DD Mainly on 3D modeling/Diagrams/Elevation design The elevation design of this project happened when the construction of main building had started due to uncertain reasons. Therefore, usual methods were not suitable in perceding this one. We had to be fast. Sanya is famous for its warm climate and being adjacent to the Pacific Occean. It's a paradise for tourists from north areas. As a result, more and more hotels were building here. However, the existing hotels were either out of date or copying forms from western world. We wanted it to be there naturally.
FACADE ANALYSIS
Transparent ratio is respond for whether the inner space could be revealed to public space. That is when the facade is solid enough, people will focus on white facade, as shown in 1,2,3, and when it is transparent enough like 4&5, visitors from outside would easily notice people in corridors.
CORRIDOR
A 40% transparent facade is suitable here to keep corridor space private. At the same time, people behind this structure would not be too boring to walk through without a landscape.
