THREE ECOLOGIES - ENVIRONMENTAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL ECOLOGY Environmental The village as the value of anchoring in front of the globalization in order to identify the specificities of the territory. Mental Settles in the articulation between individual and collective, between city and university to produce devices participating in the redefining of the modalities of to live together. Social Establishing link between the city and the university not by opening up to the city but transforming the borders into inhabitable space by thickening of the existing limits.

GARDEN CITY

Typical Organization / Structure

14

Solution to the overcrowding population of London. Sucessor to Letchworth and Hampstead. Taking full advantage of the London underground railway system Vision to create each garden cities as a self-sustaining satellite cities. However it’s not effective in Welwyn sense as in the close proximity between Welwyn and metropolitan London. Each garden cities will have orderly-proportionate areas for residence, agriculture and industrial use surrounded by a ‘greenbelt’

CASE STUDY: WELWYN

15

Different Variation of Close in Welwyn

Borrowing from the Hampstead Garden Suburb, the close demonstrates very clear front-back relationship between the garden and the street also showing hierarchy in movements and space. By arranging the dwellings around the cul-desac, it does not only allow each dwelling of having a private garden at the back of the building thus reducing the main street down to the basic role of a route that allows for movements only.

Hampstead Garden Suburb - Asmuns Place

THE CLOSE

Cul-de-Sac Space for the Residential Dwellings

16

Instead of conceiving the demolitions, reconstructions, new buildings, the underground parking, and the major open space as separate elements, they allow some degree of integration for sustainable features we focused on defining this public space project starting from a sustainable approach. Although the word `sustainable’ has been stressed multiple times in the design statement however by looking at the layout, one can notice that the design logic is somehow similar to the Garden City. As in a clear central point has been established where other spaces / elements arranged around the central point.

17

The challenge for architects Zotov & Co was to recall a livable city center. After asking the question of what is needed to be happy, the architects chose nature and communication as the foundation of their concept. The center for the quarter an island covered, dense forest which concentrates all social activity. In relation to the Garden City and Haussmann block, the project can be interpret in a way that it draws the similarity of both precedents. Where the clear distinction of front and back from the Garden City was further emphasis with the `street’ wall facade of Haussmann’s block, while introducing the centre as a void, a common green space shared by the tenants while the function of space are orderly arranged with a strong sense of hierarchy in it.

First Fleet Park

First Fleet Park, Circular Quay The program is to propose a layout of temporal tents/ booth arrangement catering for events held in Circular Quay Precinct based on the key urban design paradigms identified in the research. Many events, such as Aroma Festival and the upcoming Smooth Festival held annually along George Street in The Rocks area while the prestige, the main event area in the first fleet park. The site was chosen as an experiment of the urban design paradigm identified in a micro-scale while testing out the viability/ effectiveness of such concepts. In the proposal, its was first to identify the central point of the site, and taking it as a design anchor, expands and radiate from there while carefully laying out the walking path in hierarchical order not only to bring people in but also connecting various point of interest and drawing relationship between them

Double Glazing Facade -

Well ventilated cavity, to cool down the inner skin.

-

Installation of venetian blind to minimize internal heat gain during summer

-

Taking up alot of space - approx. minimum of 1 m

-

Expensive to install & requires high level of maintenance & cleaning

Close Cavity Double Glazing Facade -

Requires less space approx 300 - 500 mm

-

Venetian blind in the cavity minimizes internal heat gain during summer

-

Cavity acting as a insulation layer.

DESIGN PROPOSAL

CONTEXT The precinct bounded by George, Margaret , and York Street includes a number of significant heritage listed edifice with the Shell House, located directly behind the site; separated by a 5 metre lane. However, the most prominent element on site is George Street, the one street that spans from one end to another of Sydney CBD. In the coming years, George Street will be completely paved, pedestrianized, and a light rail will be running through. Another Important element on site is the Wynyard Park. Looking back to the development history of the park, the park has a potential to expand however the development was cancelled and remain the same size until today. The Streetscape of George Street at the Wynyard section consist mostly of early 20th century masonry ‘Skyscrapers’ that is about maximum height of12 storeys due to the early height limitation of early development. Our proposalfor 275 George respond to this rich and diverse context through careful consideration of the ground plane, street wall, and podium elements and response to the adjacent buildings.
