Imagination about Architecture and Nature Imagination comes from being deficient. In our city environment, nature is rare. The loss of nature causes the citizens to admire and imagine nature. So the people, on a day off, go out and look for nature in the suburbs and visit nearby rivers and mountains. Man living in the city are the permanent displaced person of nature. My architectural concept was built on the basis of this psychology. How to look at nature. It is a concern about how to put the nature into a building. At this time, architecture empties itself to show nature rather than to express itself. So the architectural form I pursue is a relatively simple form. It becomes a stage for people to make comfortable activities, and provide a space as an architectural feild that connects nature with people. So my design concept consists of architecture, landscape and garden. It is aimed at restoring the loss of human hometown by combining landscape and garden in architectural thinking.

Architectural language / Relationship with nature Student work provided an opportunity to discover my architectural language. My architectural language is synthesized in a relatively simple and plain box form. This is because people who use the space want to recognize the building as a background harmonizing with the surrounding environment rather than strongly recognizing it. Another attempt is to relate natural elements to architecture. The natural elements are actively grafted to the building, and the building is directed to the nature.

Urban Infrastructure Bridge, which is the infrastructure of the city, is responsible for traffic. However, infrastructure such as bridges is only a single function of transportation, although it occupies a large area in the city. It is also located in an important position to connect major areas. In order to increase the utilization of bridges, we try to make architectural design using the upper part of bridges. Creating a place The character of the place changes with the times. For several decades since the establishment of the provincial government of Chungcheongnam-do, Daejeon’s original downtown was the center of administration and commerce. However, according to the redeployment plans of the provincial government of Chungcheongnam-do, the area which has lost its main function has come to a new phase. What we propose is a reinterpretation of the space that is familiar to Daejeon citizens, not a new land.

11

Site analysis /Program Along with the linear space from the provincial government of Chungcheongnam-do to Daejeon Station, there are scattered places such as Shunhwa-dong Food Culture Street, Eunheang Street, Euneujeongi Street, Chungang Market and Oriental Medicine Street. However, these places are separated spatially by the Daejeon Stream. In order to solve this problem, we utilize the bank bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge between Daejeon central market and Seongjeong commercial district, and actively connect the two separated areas. At the connection point, we propose a complex cultural space which is the center of the cultural space scattered in the Donggu area, Daejeon ‘s downtown area where the cultural facilities are lacking compared to Daejeon Seo.

12

Eunheang Bridge Design concept / Mass I looked at the city’s infrastructure, the bridge, as a place where events could take place, rather than just a concept of traffic. The mass, which will serve as a function of the complex culture, floats on the bridge and forms a passage, and opens to the scenery of the Daejeon Stream. It acts as a shade during the day, and acts as a lighthouse (Paros Box) that illuminates the surrounding area at night. The structure is a Square picture frame that surrounds the bridge and the mass and is installed repeatedly to make the structure itself a facade.

Architectural Planning The horizontally elongated mass according to the shape of the bridge includes programs such as restaurants, exhibition halls, conference rooms, and lecture rooms. These programs were arranged in a linear arrangement so that people’s actions would be seen as a facade.

Landscape Architecture The landscape architecture is formed in harmony with the surrounding terrain. Artificial landscapes such as hills or tunnels can make use of the conditions of the land around the building and overcome height differences. But the most important thing is that buildings and artificial nature do not have a sense of heterogeneity, but as a mass they have a natural circulation and are connected organically. In the course of this project, I refer to the Technische Universiteit Delft Library which is famous for Landscape architecutre. However, the slope of the hill was more gradual than that of the Delft Library, so that students could rest comfortably, and the facade of the building was made as simple as possible so that it could match the surrounding natural environment rather than the symbolism of the building.

19

Site The site consists of two small hills. These two hills are located between dormitories and outdoor sports facilities, functionally and visually function as buffer zones for separating the two spaces. In addition, a small forested hill provides students with a green space. In other words, it draws various voluntary activities of students as a ‘In-between’ space between dormitory building and sports facilities. Also, It is a place where small performances and gatherings take place, and at dawn it transforms into a space of quiet thought.

Spatial Organization The two functions of the buffer function and the relaxation function utilizing the green space are considered at the same time. First, the existing hills are shaved off, and the mass is inserted into the place where the artificial hill was made. In order to harmonize with the surrounding building scale, a single large scale mass is avoided, and it is split into two and naturally used as a basketball court and a badminton court respectively. To emphasize the green space of the hill, the roof of the building is designed to be as nimble as possible. Artificial hills naturally not only connect the two or three floors of the building, but also form the lower space of the hill, forming a crossroads of lobby and passage. Finally, an underground space connecting the two masses is used as a student welfare space such as various club activities and restaurants.

Roof The roofs of the two separated masses have different shapes. This gives the differentiation of the two buildings of different character and gives fun in the form. In addition, due to the characteristics of the gymnasium, the roof pattern was designed to minimize the direct sunlight and to adjust the indoor illumination with the indirect indirect lighting. Hill The artificial hill, which is the most important element of design, is a natural resting space, and at the same time, it has a circulation system connecting the two masses functionally. Also, due to the slope toward the soccer field, it is natural that it becomes a grandstand for soccer and various events. In addition, plants are planted in front of the curtain walls of each gymnasium, preventing westward light from directly entering the inside of the building. Structure Basically, the columns are arranged in a lattice shape along the shape of the mass. The frame of the indoor gymnasium is 600x600 H-beam and reinforced with concrete. The basketball court ceiling is designed by truss beam and the badminton court ceiling is designed by H-beam. The soil of the artificial hill is supported by the concrete wall, and the cantilever of the hill running out of the building is supported by the Y-shaped round steel pipe, and the design is differentiated.

The ‘Agricultural Scpae’ created by the citizen’s gardens on the island of Nodeul has become a major concept in the design of the Nodeul Island facility. A garden is a nature managed by people and is a nature that is segmented into a grid.It has a regular pattern of grids, but within it there are autonomous and diverse behaviors. The character of these gardens was a guide for designing the Nodeul Island facilities and exterior spaces. This allows various activities to be autonomously partitioned by the user, centering on the paved gardens. It also created a landscape that naturally leads to buildings

Space concept The first form of Nodle Island served as the foundation of the Hangang Bridge Bridge at the stop road. As time went on, the sand of the Han River was artificially or naturally lost, and the concrete space covering the bridge was expanded to form an independent island. Starting from the year 1990, the east sied and the west side have developed into a totally different pattern, centering on the Han River Grand Bridge. In the west, natural forests have been developed into natural ecosystems. In the eastern islands, a cultural environment centered on citizen’s gardens has been established. It was an important task of this design to connect the east and west Nodles island which were separated physically and environmentally and heterogeneously. We tried to connect buildings and buildings separated from each other to the east through the landscape that leads to ‘outside space - inside of building - roof - bridge’.

Urban Regeneration ‘Urban regeneration’ has emerged as a new paradigm in urban development. It is not a redevelopment according to the whole demolition but a gradual building repair or a small scale construction. Likewise ‘The Old Town’ adopts the urban regeneration strategy. We tried to revitalize Sillim-dong, which has problems such as decline of commerce, one-person residence, elderly housing, and aging of housing through three themes: urban garden, renewable energy, and startup. At this time, the residents of Sillim-dong become the main actors and form the ‘old town corporation’. This will lead to an economically and environmentally sustainable village. Architecture combined with garden ‘Urban Garden’ was a key factor in branding the town. This is due to the demand for gardens, which are found through garden elements found throughout the village, not by artificially inserted programs by architects. The gardens cover the facade of a building, are located indoors or alley between buildings. The gardens, combined with the interior and exterior spaces of the buildings, create a unique atmosphere and make ‘The Old Town’ a unique place.

39

Design stradegy 1. Base camp After analyzing the unused land and long - term vacant lot scattered in the urban space, the space will be used as the main base camp and provide a variety of programs for citizens. 2. Public space Through the public space of various programs in the base camp, members inside and outside the village interact and propose a space where they can relax. 3. Activation of local economy in connection with university In cooperation with the seoul national university, the local economy will be revitalized. We will establish a business start-up office through the renovation of vacant buildings, and select buildings that can be linked with Seoul National University to support the creation of local specialization streets. 4.Eco-friendly system Adopt environment-friendly systems to sustain garden landscape and urban agricultural programs and characterize the area. Through the solar panel system and water collecting system located in each public space, it is possible to support the sustainability of the city, to utilize it for gardening, urban agriculture and to support the energy poor. 5.Characterization of village culture Sillim-dong, a low-rise residential area, will improve the scenery and eco-environment and meet the needs of local residents, promote economic development by attracting tourists, and finally transform the whole town into a city garden. Profesional Works Gukdangli House, 2009 Hong’s House, 2017

52

Craft / House The first architectural work in the field of architecture was housing. The architect expresses the imagination through a plane drawing, and the craft mans build a virtual space in the real space. As I was working for the residential project, I listened to the client ‘s voice as much as I could and I designed it delicately, because house is a space to be used for 24 hours. I imagined a scenery to be seen in the future and drawn the line, and I experienced that the imagination was realized.

53

Gukdang-ri House 2009 / Team work Role : Aarchitectural models / Architectural drawings(Floor Plan, Roof Plan, Elevation, Section, Section detail) Steel structure detail drawings Tool : Auto Cad 2007 Designer : Locus Design Team(Prof. Lee Deajun, Han hyunjin, Nah junsoo) Location : Gukdang-ri, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea Lot area : 987m2 Building area : 191m2 Gross area : 213m2 Structure : Assembly steel structure(EZ system, Patented technology) Exterior material : Bacepanel Interior material : Exposed concrete, Bacepanel, Eco friendly paints The house, which is located at the boundary between Pohang and Gyeongju, was in harmony with the rhythm of the surrounding mountains and then mass of the house was formed according to the circumstance. The layout of the architectural plan has been come from the concept of traditional Korean houses(Sarangchea, Ahnchea). Main house, guest house, and the children’s room are independent, and the transparent passage composed of glass connects each room. The glass box placed on the main house is a study room where client can see the panorama of the surrounding natural landscape. It also serves as a skylight to draw light into the living room.

Independent wall There is thick exposed concrete on the front of the living room. The concrete wall receives light falling from the skylight and changes its color over time. The independent wall was added through a floor plan study in the process of placing a stair case. Thereafter the stairs, which were planned to be exposed toward the living room in an initial plan, were hidden in the walls. Naturally, a narrow valley-like staircase has been created and when you go to the library through the stairs, the view blocked by the wall expands and extends to the yard beyond the living room.

58

Curved wall Originally planned as a pond, however, due to management difficulties, the plan was changed to the backyard at the request of the client. The rural landscape stretches beyond the low-lying Gebion along the curve. The curved stone wall embrace the whole building, which can be seen to be rigid, and creates a warm atmosphere. Due to the flooring of the backyard that extends to the aisle, the glass passage becomes a transition space.

59

Seolgok-ri House 2014 / Team work Role : Aarchitecture design / Architectural 3D modeling Architectural drawings(Floor Plan, Roof Plan, Elevation Section, Section detail), Construction supervision Tool : Auto Cad 2010, Sketchup 8 Designer : Harmonie(Prof. Kim Hakchul, Nah Junsoo, Park Jongwoo) Location : Seolgok-ri, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea Lot area : 953.06m2 Building area : 116.64m2 Gross area : 194.28m2 Structure : Assembly steel structure(Free Frame System, Patented technology) Exterior material : Stucco Interior material : Diatomite paints

60

The house is located in the middle of a wooded mountain. In the living room, a two-story curtain wall was installed to allow the greatest scenery to flow into the house as much as possible. We also tried to put a light into the all sides of house through the horizontal window. The light that enters through those window reflects on the wall and changes in various forms with the passage of time. The motif of the form was a flying bird spreading its wings in the mountains. Due to the limit of cost, it was less slippery than the initial design. But the still steep form of the roof gives a dynamic sense of mass and is suitable for snowy Seolgork-ri.

Structure Columns were 100 * 100 steel pipe. It is a steel frame that is exposed inside the house, so that it is as thin as possible. For this purpose, the column spacing was determined by structural calculation. The roof was designed as a truss structure, considering the local characteristics of the snowy road with heavy snow load. A ‘space ball’ and a company patent ‘Free Frame System’ were used to connect the beams to the pillars and beams from the 6 directions.

66

Steel The iron represented by the symbols of the industrial age expresses straight lines and cold properties. The steel frame with excellent spatial structure makes it possible to imagine the space by standing up several pillars. It is also a material close to communication and communication rather than disconnection. So it looks light, transparent, and even sloppy. But when the house and steel frame meet, it creates a cozy sense of space. The steel frame exposed in the inner space of the house becomes a cold but safe fence.

Gardening Works Universe on the Table, 2016 Metal pond, 2017 Atelier about Time, 2017

68

Scale shifting The garden is the smallest area of work in progress. In the process of contemplating the relationship between nature and architecture, gardening was a practical area that deals with nature in the most concrete way. Through this, I have come to know nature’s appearance and various kinds of names, colors, heights, and textures that change with time. Architects need to be able to design the space across the scale, from the city to the architecture and the garden. In that sense, the garden becomes a good textbook.

69

Universe on the Table

2016 / Korea national arboretum garden show / Team work 4.2m x 3.6m Location : Korea national arboretum, Pocheon-si, South Korea Role : Installation

70

71

Design Concept The ‘Universe on the Table’ represents the psychology of modern people who want to own a garden in daily life. In busy work and in a rapidly flowing urban space, we imagine nature at an office desk or at a desk in a small room. So we imagined a garden in a different form. The virtual nature space with various artificial flowers on the theme of the seed spreads on the tabletop. Although it is not a living flower, it is not a grown plant, but we can imagine a plant that grows enough to see the seeds, and can inspire feelings in harmony. It is a seed and an artificial flower, not a mere natural shadow or imitation, but a possibility. Maybe it is a tragedy of a modern man who can not have a small garden, but it is a meaningful struggle to find a small garden in a gap of a city.

73

Metal Pond 2017 / Korea Hanpyung Garden Festival / Team work / 3.6m x 2.4m Location : Suncheon bay national garden, Suncheon-si, South Korea Role : Design concept idea, Planting design, Installation

74

75

Design Concept The city is an artificial ecosystem made of iron and glass. If glass is the skin that surrounds the facade, iron is the bones that make up the structure. Iron and glass, which are hard to see, have the same physical properties as flowing water, and iron and glass melted differently depending on their use. Cool and cold, iron and glass, which have obtained rigidity, luster and transparency, make up the city and create a refracted landscape with the surrounding area illuminated. ‘Metal Pond’ consists of a glass bottle on a metal plate, an aquatic plant, and a herbaceous ornamental around it, and a ground-cover plant. The objet metal plate is a fixed water (fixed flow), a metaphor of nature (pond) and city (metal). A flat surface reflects the surroundings and creates a strange illusion.

Atelier about time 2017 / Seoul Garden Show / Team work / 2m x 2m Location : Yeouido, Seoul Role : Design concept idea, Planting design, Installation

78

Design Concept ‘Atelier about time’ is a story about the time of the garden. If you look at a garden as a picture, the shape of the garden is reminiscent of an atelier. As the painter picks the delicate colors and touches the brush, the gardener plant the plants with careful touch. At this time, the gardens become one place completed through time. The gardener imagines a garden that changes shape over time and fills the space with nature. Each of these imaginings of ‘time’ and ‘atelier’ are symbolized by various items such as a ruler clock, easel, etc., and stimulate a different imagination of the garden to visitors who appreciate the garden. Plant List Panicum Warrior / Panicum Northwind / Yago Dwarf / Tillandsia / Wire Vine / Common Gypsophila(dry flower)

Practice The architect decides the form according to the needs of various programs, conditions of site and budget each time. At this time, architectural virtues are adaptive and receptive. Experience in a number of projects, including architectural studios, competitions, and field works, was a training course that improved the adaptability and capacity. Also I have the opportunity to experiment and develop my language of space.

However, due to the relocation of Pohang Station, the existing site of Pohang station lost its function. So we tried to design the site as a linear park where residents can relax and create various cultural activities. The site is divided into four clusters and filled with restaurants / cafes, ponds / plazas, performance halls, history / markets, etc., respectively. Therefore, I would like to propose ‘K. Koinonia’, a form of economic community to prepare the refgees from North Korea in the future. It will serve as a large-scale refugee camp and provides jobs in connection with the surrounding industrial facilities. At first, only a lagre gym exist in that area. But when refugees come down, the function of the gym disappears and becomes an emergency relief warehouse. In the process of creating the camp, refugees form groups themselves to make clusters. The bunker buried deep underground was not used for a long time, but it came to a new phase according to the development of the Hwangryong mountain. So we made a huge space in the basement to prevent the building from being exposed to the middle of the mountain. The ridge line of the mountain is turned back to the ground, and the bunker buried in the ground is uncovered and exposed to the outside, creating a huge empty space between those. The exterior and interior of the building do not make much sense to Planeur. It is one space all connected in the city. Street lights installed in the square, marble walls, underground space, etc. are the elements that are attracted from inside the surrounding buildings. Through this, we wanted to harmonize with neighboring buildings without any sense of heterogeneity. However, due to the movement of the CBD and the newly constructed Cheonan station, the existing downtown area of Cheonan Station has declined. In this situation, Cheonan Station is renewed through ‘Cheonan New Horizontal’ and we want to regenerate the declining old city.
