History. Stadel Collection. How does it come alive?

" For every Frankfurt citizen, Frankfurt and the Städel go together like the Pitti and Florence." Fried Lübbecke, Frankfurt art historian, 1912 The origin of stadel museum actually came from the interest of Johann Friedrich Stadel in art. The collection begins in the 1760s with an amateur collection at home with the content of amassing paintings, drawings, prints and small sculptures. Most of it conclude primarily German and Dutch Baroque works, which he had been stocked in France. Johann Friedrich Stadel is an ambitious person as he intend to discover a complete version of the history of art. Other than that, he also proceed his intention on spreading arts to everyone by supporting and train budding artists. On the 1816, Johann Friedrich Stadel passed away in Frankfurt am Main and the final version of his will written on the 15th March of 1815 is a letter of foundation – the cornerstone of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Further on, it eventually developed from the first public art collection for the citizens of Frankfurt to an international museum which the Stadel Museum is now.

Additional acitivities.

As part of the brief for the competition is to improved some of the spaces in existing building, the architect have brought in some additional activities to bring more life to the building. The building has been designed in a manner of respecting the handicap priority where it is fully wheelchair accessible. Cafe, bookshop, renovated library and also the improved garden is the addition public activities for the visitor. Nevertheless, it is the extension which gives the visitor a taste of contemporary art.

The highlight of the extension will be the special element that installed to improve the building as a whole. Reacting towards the criticize of having limited amount of natural light, the architects has invented roof lights into their design, 195 roof lights with the size between 1.5 to 2.5 metres create a very strong lighting atmosphere to the extension and also a total new impression to the garden.

27

Part of the most interesting change about an extension building is seeing how it change and grow. Following pictures are to show how the extension has been completed. From the basement excavation part to the installation of the structure to support the majestic dome roof or also known as the garden hall on the ground.

34

Concept.

The architect has the intention to remain the main concept of the existing building which is symmetrical axis. So to succeed this the location of placing the stair is very important. The decision of placing it at the end of the main building create a balance of the new and old space. It is good as this will create a flow for the building instead of having the visitor focusing only on the new part which is the extension.

35

36

Linkage.

Both blocks functioned on their own as both different individuals. The extension created a bond between these two different departments as a transition and linkage for them, connecting the west and north side building together.

37

38

Structure.

Throughout research, the 8.2 metres height extension is supported by twelve internal columns and reinforced concrete exterior walls on the side with the load bearing floor plate on the ground. The maze arrangement of walls in the museum itself does not contribute or affect the extension building structure as it do not touched the ceiling. It make sense as in the future if there is any amendments on the museum, it wont affect the structure of the extension.

42

Form experiment. A

B

C

The form changed might bring a big change to the building. Here is an experiment on how if the extension form is a roof garden or vertical garden instead what it is now. A ) The extension. Responding well with other blocks B ) If the extension is a roof garden, it gives more respond towards the surrounding. For example, the river on the north. This option will still provide roof light to the building. C ) Vertical garden might be interesting but it does not solve the critics of having less natural lighting. It doesnt light up much.

43

44

Circulation experiment.

A

B

C

This experiment is related to the previous experiment. As the form changed, it also changes to the circulation. A ) Looking into the circulation of the extension, it provides a single route to most other blocks of the building. B ) If the extension is on the top of the existing building, it will creates a double route which will seperate the west building and the north building. C ) If the extension take place as a vertical garden, it will creates a treble route which wont be ideal. As far as concerned a good extension provides improvement to the old ones, more routes will just isolate the old building and it would not be a benefitial add ons.

45

46

Spatial experiment.

The extension created new type of space into the building. Refering to the section, type of spaces conclude in the west wing is linear spaces. As for the main building is space which we will get in most of the old victorian buildings that play with heights. The contemporary art museum created a mazey journey experience with different compartments.

47

48

Existing vs Extension.

Taking into comparison, the existing building and the extension both stands out in their own identity. One is for the classic art whereas the other one is for modern contemporary art since 1945. The layout and background of the interior both contrast heavily to project the visitor a different experience. The existing building is with dark colour background making the art collection stands out in different way comparing to the extension part which carries the white wash identity.

The circulation of the existing building is pretty straight forward whereas the white washed contemporary art museum providing a different circulation, a much more journey circulation experience for the visitor

Some might argue that Schneider + Schumacher’s masterpiece are better as it provides much more lighting atmosphere into the building. Putting in a different perspective, the existing part of the museum provide much more privacy, responding well to the building programme as a museum. Fairly conclude, both existing and extension have it is own special character which complement each other to make the building great as a whole.

A New Architecture Identity.

" Frankfurt is given not only a distinctive and unique exhibition space , but a state of the art green building too. " appauled by the jury in announcing the result

I do agree with the Jury that the architecture itself is amazing. It provides a new identity for the city. From how well it blends into the existing context, it shows how good it is as a piece of architecture. It might be the building that convert the city in following the trend of contemporary extension building. The greens would be the bonus but the main elements which is the roof light will be the highlight of this piece of great architecture. Whether to move towards contemporary or going backward to the classic, it reminds the building in the city of how important light to a building.

52

Abstract Illustration. From the symmetrical axis concept to its special element of rooflight, the simple structure that hold onto the strong character dome to a mazey circulation in the museum, the extension have provided me with different types of illusion. Hereby i have done an illustration in explaining the imaginary of that potential space that i am yet to experience in reality.

53

54

And personally i ask myself a question.

55

When will be the next extension take place ?

56

NEVER. BECAUSE WE FOUND OUR NEW HOME. 57
