My own impression towards Venice. Dear readers, This book was made based on my perception before & after visiting Venice. When comparing the reality and what i thought Venice is, there is not much difference but there is a big gap when comes to experience and imagination. It is amazing to see what you seen on paintings actually exist in reality. Venice is a place borned and raised by artists. From architecture to the monumental arts, Venice proved to be influential in art. Being part of Unit 5, I was lucky enough to be provided a chance to explore the architecture side of Venice. If to ask myself “ What i really love about this place? “, i will answer the romantic side of it. To visit Venice yesterday, today or tomorrow, nothing will ever change and that is the romantic side of it. Nevertheless, Venice is the best place I visited so far.

Geographical location.
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Being in the list of UNESCO, Italy have stands up as the country that have the most sites listed under the World Heritage site with the figure of 50 sites. Venice as a city that contains several architectural masterpieces by some of the world greatest artist has been one of the most iconic place in italy. The special character of the island have made the island itself becaming ,one of the most important preserved site under the World Heritage site list. Preservation strategy.
• 1972 Convention
Founded in the 5AD, Venice, the capital of Venetto region gained its name from the ancient Venetti people that inhabited the region by the 10 BC. Before the name Venice is derived, the city has also been described as “City of Water” , “City of Masks” , “ City of Bridges” , “ floating city “ , “ City of Canals “ and so on. The fact that Venice is locating at one of the finest spot in the map of Italy have given the island itself its geographical value. Well known in dominating the trading market back in the middle ages and renaissance, Venice have gained lot from there. Apart from that, Venice is also known as one of the best place for artist based on its beautiful origin setting. As the Venice we know today, it is an unique lagoon with the fish shape look alike form, Venice is now one of the most important site under UNESCO.

The 1972’s convention has been adopted due to the request of saving Abu Simbel temples and Venice. It has been introduced in 1977 after the ratification by 20 nations. The result have concluded a list of heritage sites due to its universal value to humanity. Regarding to that, every nation has agreed with a term or same goal in preserving and provide solutions in order to protect these heritage sites for future generations. Part of the procedure of the convention has required parties of different nation providing updated reports regarding to the condition of the listed site. • World Heritage Instruments In the 1971 convention, the preliminary report of World Heritage Instruments has been presented. One of the important context of the report is to announce that both countries and international authority will carried the responsibility that related to the selected protective monuments, groups of buildings or sites, but only the sovereign power of each state have the rights to protect its cultural heritage. The tools to protect preserved listed site has been sums up in four categories, such as international recognition, management plan, financial support and the list of world heritage in danger.

Criteria.
Positive Consequences of being as a World Heritage Site. • Acqua Alta 1966 converted Venice into an international interest.
On 1966, Venice has been landed heavy flood which caused heavy damage to the island. In looking into the quality of the island, following is the criteria that made Venice to be in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. • A unique artist achievement. Formed by 118 islands, Venice carried the image as a floating city in the middle of the lagoon. From its unique character, it allows famous artist like Cannaletto, Guardi, Turner and so on to gained inspiration in producing some of the famous painting. Apart from that, Venice also contained one of the world highest concentrations of masterpiece. For example, from the Torcello’s Cathedral to the church of Santa Maria della Salute. Back in time when monuments its the symbol of beauty art, Venice have some of the best monuments during that era such as San Marco, Palazzo Ducale,San Zanipolo, Scuola di San Marco, Frari and Scuola di San Rocco, San Giorgio Maggiore and so on. • Influences in the development of architecture and monumental arts. From the sequence of various island built in early days, its proven that monuments are built following the Venetian models. Leading the monument field for certain time, soon 5 Venice play another major influence in a different form of art which is painting. Other than changing the perspective of painting in terms of space, light and colour, the likes of Bellini and Giorgione, then Tiziano, Tintoretto, Veronese and Tiepolo have play a big role in the development of painting art across Europe.
Apart from looking into the bad points of the Acqua Alta have caused Venice, there is also good point that Venice gained from the natural disaster. The incident have turned Venice into a worldwide interest. Renee Mahuer , Director of UNESCO on that time have called upon governments of all 120 Member states to put all their experties to pay their tribute towards the incident. Over 50 private organizations from different countries offered their help in restoring Venice back to its best condition. Today one of the most outstanding committee is the Venice in Peril Fund. Other than raising the fund for Venice, The British committee also organizes campaign of protecting Venice, educate people the problems that Venice been facing and the importance of preserving the lovely Island. The other Venice international interest committee is the fundraising app. In collaboration with The Worchester Polytechnic ( Massachusettes ), Venice Project Centre and the culture unit of the aforementioned Office have carried out a project with a goal of restoring coats of arms, roundels, reliefs, inscriptions, sculptures, street altars and so on. Although these following symbols and parts of Venice is not really visible but there is a need of preserving all of it because it contains historical value. Furthermore, The Worchester Polytechnic also did research about the lagoon studies regarding to its mobility, demographic, local culture and so on. • Authenticity matters.
• The unusualness of an archaeological site Existing monuments and vestiges have become a source that function a linkage between the east and the west, Islam and Christianity creating a memory that stays there forever. • Possesses an incomparable series of architectural ensembles illustrating the hight of the Republic’s splendour Venice is like a dictionary of medieval architecture history. At here we are seeing the development of architecture. From great monuments like Piazza San Marco to the modest residences in the calli or campi of its six different neighborhood which also known as Sestieri. • represents an outstanding example of a semi-lacustral habitat The fact of how the unique topology of Venice have make the island itself one of the best island in the world. It is impressive when Venice is still capable to maintain its origin soil due to the big change of climate today. The structure system of the island have marked the importance of muddy shelves that locating at the bottom. It needs to preserved just like the building or piazza because it is the main support platform of the whole island structure. •
symbolizes the people’s victorious struggle against the elements
With us human managed to maintain the island and not letting it sink, it has proven this magic masterpiece needs to be preserved based on this valueable creation. Venice, known as the “ queen of island “ is the main device where Marco Polo (1254-1324 ) begins his journey from Venice to search for other amazing places like China, Annam, Tonkin, Sumatra, India and Persia. To remembered Marco Polo, his tomb has been erected as a tribute to its role as Venetian merchants in the world discovery.

UNESCO, as a body which preserved the world heritage sites have the strategy and responsible in keeping the site original character. Taking into account, the urban structure of Venice has been well retained as what it is back in Middle ages and Renaissance time. From the formal and spatial characters of the urban structure to the various types of monuments that represent the city are all in the same condition if compare it to the vintage times. Other than that, looking into a bigger scale, UNESCO has also successfully retained the whole urban system layout with the originality of their settlement patterns and organization of open spaces. Instead of inventing a new structure system, the authentic building structure has been restore although it requires a lot of maintenance. Apart from the structural , UNESCO have also paid attention on originality of the building materials. This is to appreciate the unique techniques developed in the usage of building materials.

Looking on the other side of the weather, the highest precipitation in Venice will be on the November which can be up to approximately 90mm. In that case, it is the month that Venice could experience the highest tide throughout the whole year. Relating to the precipitation, the highest water temperature will be on August which will be around 25 degree celcius. From May to September, the weather might be catergorized as average temperature to travel but it might also period of the island experienced most rain. May is the month which experience the most rain which is up to eleven days. Meanwhile, similar to January and February, August could be one of the month that experience least days of raining, which is only six days. It is almost half of the total of rainy days in May

Bond in Venice.
Venice, arguably one of the most beautiful place in the world is loved by everyone. Most of the famous movies , advertisement or music video have been in Venice because the beauty of the city. From the famous Coca Cola advertisement back in 1960s with the feature of pigeon forming the word “ Coca- Cola “ in St. Marks Square to the infamous Like A Virgin music video, Venice have always been appreciate for its beauty. Bond, James Bond is no stranger in film industry. A character who known as British leading secret agent is a gentleman who all man wants to be. Although the character is from England but all 23 series of James Bond have been shoot in different countries across the world. Not to missed out the fact, the movie have always choose best scenery to explain bond’s heroic actions or on the other side, his romantic character. In fact, three different James Bond have partially shoot in Venice. 1) From Russia with love. ( 1963 ) In the early 60s, “ From Russia with love “ is the second series of James Bond. Bond starring by Sean Connery appears in Venice at the end of the movie before departing to Russia with Tatiana Romanova. Not exactly the real Venice but projection that capturing a romantic kissing scenery of Bond with his partner in the background of The Bridge of Sighs. It is the movie ending credits. 2) Moonraker. ( 1979 ) Moonraker is a movie of James Bond in the late 70s. This is one of the Bond movie that been shoot in different countries such as London, Paris, Rio De Janeiro, Venice and so on. James Bond starring by Roger Moore described Venice as a hard place to work at. Back in that time, Venice is already became one of the leading touristic place. So when people know part of the James Bond will be shooting in the St. Marks Square, the place was flooded by people. James Bond in this episode appear in Venice where the scenery of him pursued through the canal by hencemen of Drax. Famous scenery is when the escape of James Bond with his gondola converting into a hovercraft, allowing him to cross the Piazza San Marco in style. Apart from the landmark place, this movie also shown the culture art of Venice where James Bond visited Venini glass factory. Venini glass is one of the famous product from Venice by Paolo Venini. 3) Casino Royale. ( 2006 ) After 27 years, James Bond was once again casting in Venice. This time is a different type of scenery of Bond appeared in Venice. Not the romantic or heroic scenery but the imagination of building collapsed that catch audience eyes. Palazzo Pisani, 17th century palace with the elements of Gothic and Baroque located along the Grand Canal. This is a part where James Bond was fighting against the villain to save his love. Extensive shooting spoiled the building structure and make the building sinks. This shows us an illusion on how if a Gothic and Baroque style building will look like if it sinks for real in the island. A life-sized model, also in a water tank, was used for the interior scenes. The house weighed 90 tons and was controlled with a combination of hydraulics and electronics. The sinking scenes took three weeks to film, shooting nine hours a day.

Problems in Venice. 1 ) Population Depreciation.
Although Venice might always known as a dream place for many of us all around the world but it does have its bad side. From research, it has shown that the major problem faced by the island itself is the local population depreciation and it is still growing. By comparing the populations throughout decades, it shown in an obvious way the population crisis has risen dramatically which sees the drop of the population in Venice today. The population drop in a really fast rate which from 120,000 in 1980 to 60,000 in 2009. Furthermore, if comparing the amount of people live in the country in the 1970s is almost triple of what it is in the 2013.
2 ) Venice is sinking !
Other major problem faced by Venice is the island itself is sinking. This ugly truth might lead Venice, an island which uniquely floating in the middle of the lagoon to lost its special character. The city is sinking in a process called subsidence and sea levels are rising in a process called eustasy. Traditionally, the high water were due to unusually high tides caused by strong prevailing winds, storm surges, and severe inland rain events. The island itself experienced the high water tide throughout the whole year and strongly affected by the high water on autumn and winter ( wettest part of the year – October and January ). Research have shown that the city might sinking five times faster than what been predicted. As predicted, the city will sink between 3 to 4cms per century but apparently what happening is it sinks 2mm per year, which means 20 cm per century. It is five times more serious than what we thought. Proposed solution : MOSE ( Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico ) project.
The latest council have estimate that the rate of the population decline will increase to between 2000 and 2500 a year. With an average 25% of the local population is over the age of 64, it makes us wonder how long will the local population stays?
What really caused the issue? I ) It is one of the city around the world that contained most visitors a day. With the amount of 55,000 visitors daily and 20 millions annually, it is understandable why the locals move away from the city. II ) Houses price is all raised in an unacceptable ways. Encouraging the rich Venetians to live there forever or it should be the other way round where it is a valueable property to get them more wealthy ? Some called it “ the second home “ Iii ) Jobs available in Venice is limited. Even if you have a job, it is hard to sustain yourself in a touristic city like this. Iv Other than job opportunity, education service in the city is another aspect why the young people is moving out. This will normally be a single route for them as they will find better job opportunity in other cities than Venice. v) Living in Venice is challenging after the flood in 1966 that basically became one of the reason why the ground floor of total 16,000 houses is left unoccupied. Other challenging aspects will the rising levels of water. Would Venice turned into an Italy Disneyland in 30 years time? A city without any local residents. The answer will still be called mystery eventhough we know the possibility is really high.
In a short term, venetians have proposed solution for the high water tide by building raised sidewalks. Seeing the problem as a long term problem, MOSE project has been implemented. The project described as a series of floodgates that would stretch across three openings which is the Lido, Malamacco and Chioggia inlet that connect the Venetian Lagoon with the Adriatic sea. Floodgates will become the component that block the water to come in. As the tides are low, floodgates will lie flat on the bottom of the channels whereas as high tide detected, gate will activate and floodgates will be activated by filling with air and raised became the barrier to the Adriatic. It could hold the tide up to 2 meters above the water level. The project has been proposed since the 1970s but the government begins the project on the 2001. Expected to cost around $ 2 -3 Billion , the project has been put on hold again to be reconsider and reevaluate in 2002. The concerns of the project were that the gates would be obsolete in a few years time due to increasing rates of sea level rise. Other than that, the negative point of the project also will be that the lagoon will be closed for too long and this will disrupting the natural ebb and flow of tides, resulting in increased pollution concentrations and environmental damage. After all the issues, on 2003 the project has been relaunched by the italy’s Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

Probably highest flood i seen in a city so far but some said it wasnt the worst though. Diagram above is to show spaces that been influenced with the high tide when water floods up. Most of the important area in Venice as labeled in grey is free from flood. This included Peggys Guggenheim Art Collection. Some might have high level of flood but this fact might be a bonus to the area. Some of the building has been developed reacting positively towards the high tide of the city. For example, Carlo Scappa ‘s Fondazione Querini Stampalia.

Trafficanal.
The transportation in Venice is only by boats. It has been used widely back in the olden times to travel goods when Venice used to be the leading trading place in the world. The only traffic route in Venice is canal, where there is no roads for vehicle around here. Diagram above explained the route of waterbus which functioned as the main public transport apart from gondola. Main traffic route which is the busiest route will be the grand canal because most of the hotspots located along the route.

Identical.
On observing the door , windows and ornamentation , I found out a lot of information. These components giving me a message whether the building itself is occupied or not, it is a public or private building and a property of rich or poor. Little detail of the building defined its identity, not the form itself. Its valueable.

Materiality specialized.
Stones , bricks and plaster. Traditional material that been used in the most of the cities in Europe but to sense these three different materials in Venice is different. Complementing with the salt water from canal, crumbles from the stone layer gave a vintage look to the material. Materiality is about its longevity and its a projection of its past. This special character suits a city like Venice.

The Infinite lifestyle.
From the way goods deliver using boat to the communication way between neighborhood, it proved that lifestyle of Venetian didnt change much compare to the olden times.

The futuro.
Venice have its own strong character and identity. It is right that we should conserve everything of this unique city but would conservatino last forever ? Merging two different buildings in the photograph shows that the contemporary Venice should consist the elements but probably develop on its skin. Being on a rational side, we should preserved the character and identity instead of the existing. That is my future Venice.
