DREAM MENAGERIE (THE GAME)

Hsinming Fung + Craig Hodgetts Postgraduate Thesis Prize

Continuing my M. Arch 2 Thesis, Dream Menagerie (The Game) is a 2.5D puzzle platformer that uses the world-building aspects from the previous project as an ambitious attempt to encapsulate the player in the world of Sophie and Haku, utilizing the game as the narrative media.

ABOUT THE GAME

Dream Menagerie is a puzzle platformer where the player character is a young girl named Sophie who explores a surreal environment filled with monsters and machines on a journey to restore Khun, the Deity of Harmony. The player controls Sophie from a 2.5D side scroller perspective to progress through different levels while having the ability to switch places with her animal companion Haku to explore each level environment from its 3D perspective. This ability allows the player to solve puzzles by switching between Sophie and Haku as both having their own specialties, Haku who can roam exclusive environments and is much more aware of the surrounding while Sophie can castspells as a

shrine maiden. Sophie and Haku needs to learn how to work together to overcome adversities in their adventure.

The core objective of each game chapter is to retrieve a piece of Khun that takes form of a monster manifested by a story character. The monster acts as the main obstacle of each level and by aiding the story character, they are then disconnected from the monster in which Sophie will be able to tame and retrieve the energy of the monster with the help of Haku. By collecting all the pieces of Khun, Sophie and Haku will be able to restore Khun and bring balance back to their world.

NARRATIVE

Human’s extreme emotions give life to monsters. In the past humans and monsters maintain a balanced relationship with the help of Khun, The Deity of Harmony. Taking the form of a giant sky leviathan, Khun swims between the yin and yang, cycling through the positive and negative energy of our world and absorbs the monsters within itself as it passes through each realm. Once fused with the Deity, the monsters become a part of Khun, adding new splendors to the eternal leviathan as it soars above the highest mountains and the deepest abyss, bringing order to the chaos energy that created our universe.

As human technology progressed, humankind grew with the desire to control and extinguish all the monsters that were considered a threat or inconvenience to humans. This hubris led

civilization to the Great Purge and eventually considered the killing of The Deity of Harmony itself, thinking this will eradicate the monsters for good. By studying Khun’s rhythm of appearance in different locations, the State gravely wounded Kuhn with the Light Cannons developed by Shinxin Company.

As Sophie explores the world, ancient relics of Khun reveals pieces of the story.

Khun, The Deity of Recollection, harbors all the creations of people’s dreams within its body, even the monsters.

Gran Gran left this talisman, Muyu, for Sophie. It can harness the spirits of monsters and allow Sophie to switch places with Haku.

Main Character - Sophie

An apprentice shrine maiden at the Temple of Harmony, Sophie is on a journey to find her grandmother, who vanished in the attempt to heal the gravely injured sky leviathan, Khun.

Sophie believes that if she recovers the lost pieces of the Deity, she will be able to see her grandmother again.

Sophie’s spirt fox partner

Haku

Driven by determination, Sophie discovered Haku in the ruins where her grandmother had vanished. Sensing Haku’s familiar spirit aura, Sophie became convinced that Haku was somehow the bridge between the fabled Deity of Recollection, possibly holding the key to resurrecting the lost leviathan.

With a strong spiritual presence, Haku is highly alert to its surroundings and can detect traps and clues to aid Sophie’s journey.

Spirt Monster: Twisted Love

Taking the form of a giant monster with a hollowed chest, Twisted Love is a manifestation of a grieving father. The exterior veins of the monster have flower-like characteristics, which seem to be tied to his memories of his daughter’s love for apple flowers.

Calamity Falls

On her way towards the shrine, Sophie can see fire and smoke coming from the shrine, with a trail of blazed trees in her path. When Sophie finally got to the shrine, she could see her grandmother at the altar surrounded by radiating light, the healing aura of a shrine maiden at its full strength, shooting up toward the leviathan. Sophie looks up at the sky, and the strong energy current channeled from her grandmother’s spell shoots directly into the Diety of Balance, Khun. Just as Sophie was about to run towards her grandmother, everything around her turned blinding white as the leviathan suddenly exploded into thousands of pieces. When Sophie opened her eyes, she could see that her grandmother had vanished. However, in her grandmother’s place, Sophie can see a radiating fox that bears the symbol of Khun waving its tail at her.

Transform

The air was unusually thick this night as Sophie pushed onwards with Haku. Sophie could hear a monster’s shriek in the distance. As the noise grew closer, Sophie could see the red scanning light of the drone chasing after it. Followed by a loud gunshot, the monster was killed by the flying drone that scanned the vicinity before flying away into the distance.

Where did this monster come from? Sophie thought as she and Haku continued forward in the direction where the monster came from. Slowly, they saw a shed up ahead with drones circling around the area. A man was outside on his knees, holding his daughter, radiating a dark aura. Sophie realized this was the same daughter and father from the morning. Without a warning, the drone fired a shot towards the girl, with the father screaming in agony.

Almost immediately after the shot, Sophie can see the dark aura transferring to the father as his body starts being enveloped in black. Sophie can see a monster with incredible power slowly forming using the dark aura leeching off of the now unconscious father.

A Way In

As Sophie and Haku continue forward, they can see the havoc the monster has inflicted on the surrounding environment. The small town’s crystal plant facility was already ripped to pieces. Sophie can see the monster now as they move closer. The monster is digging a hole in the ground. Around the hole lies the little girl and her father, who both seem to be unconscious. Are they still alive? Sophie asked herself. SWITCH>Haku. As Haku, Sophie can see a thin thread of red string linking the father to the beast. Both the father and the daughter have very faint traces of spark, the life force of living things. It’s a relief that they are still alive. Maybe there is a way to save them! The monster had finished digging its pit and after another howling cry, it grabbed both the girl and her father and vanished into the hole. As Haku and Sophie crawled the monster dug was punched through to what seemed like the underground floor of the crystal plant facility. Maybe the monster is trying to feed off these crystals? SWITCH>Sophie. Sophie runs to catch up with Haku. From her knowledge, the crystal plant facility is what the town used to generate electricity; the facility itself is built near Crystal Mountain, not too far from here. The facility should have multiple access points; maybe there is another way down to reach them. Looking around, Sophie thinks there is too much debris to find anything useful. SWITCH>Haku. Running through the rubble, Sophie notices an air duct with the lids blown off. Sophie jumped in. The air dock tunnel serpents into the underground. Sophie carefully ducks underneath a slowly spinning fan and continues her search. She can already hear the faint sound of the

as she continued forward. Finally, she sees a dimly lit room underneath her. This is her opportunity to explore the facility. After finding a loose ceiling panel up ahead, Sophie pushes the panel and jumps into the room. Padding into a long corridor, Sophie spotted a red metal beam that was piercing diagonally through the ceiling and into the floor. SWITCH>Sophie. Above ground, Sophie searches around to see if she can locate the red beam from the outside. Ah, there it is! Underneath a collapsed roof, Sophie finds the same beam. If only there is access nearby… SWITCH>Haku. After some search near the main corridor. Sophie sees a ladder leading to the ground above. SWITCH>Sophie. Using the relationship between the beam and the ladder, Sophie tries to pinpoint the location that the ladder should lead towards and starts digging through the rubble. To her relief, she found a concealed hatch

after clearing the debris covering it. Opening up the hatch, Sophie made her way down to join Haku underneath the facility.

Divergent

Sophie can hear that the monster is close by.

Peaking by the corner, the monster seems to be eating the crystals in the storage unit. The father and daughter seem nowhere to be found. SWITCH>Haku. They are definitely close. With her heightened awareness, Sophie sees traces of spark on the ground that left a faint trail. Quietly following the trail, Sophie finds the two lying unconscious in one of the rooms near the crystal storage. With the powers of a shrine maiden, Sophie knows that she can still save them. SWITCH>Sophie. Just as Sophie was about to walk towards the room, she stopped and noticed that the floor had many glass shards that would definitely make noise and catch the monster’s attention. However, the route to the room needs to pass by the monster. A divergent is needed to lure the monster away. SWITCH>Haku.

Quietly scouting the area and maneuvering around the storage, Sophie found a conveyor belt running out of the storage room and followed its path,

leading her to the pulverization room. Since the monster is drawn to sound and crystals, perhaps turning on the machinery will attract its attention!

As Sophie turned on the machine, she could hear the monster’s cry and rampaging footsteps coming near. Swiftly, she jumped into the air duct and made her way back to the corridor. SWITCH>Sophie. Sophie hurried to the daughter and her father. The father now seems to be awake yet in agony. She can see tears on his face, and he is lost in thought, looking at his daughter, muttering to himself. Sophie focused her attention now on the daughter. She was the same girl that Sophie encountered in the forest. Sophie placed her hand on the girl’s chest and closed her eyes. Haku seems to know what Sophie is trying to do and comes close to her, emitting an aura that envelops them. Feeling Haku’s energy, Sophie felt calmer and closed her eyes, concentrating both of their powers into the palm of her hands. Remembering her grandmother’s

teachings, a powerful beam of energy formed underneath her, submerging all three of them. In the distance, the monster seems to have detected this powerful disruption and is making its way back to the corridor. However, right now Sophie needed to focus, using all her concentration, she directed the energy into the girl’s wounds. As the beast was getting closer, Sophie tried even harder. As the aura vanishes, Sophie can see the monster right in front of her. Yet something seemed different; the monster’s eyes were not filled with the red rage they once had. It stood quietly; its attention fixated on the girl who had just opened her eyes. ‘Was the monster trying to protect them?’ Sophie thought. Feeling a nudge on her side, Sophie looked in Haku’s direction and found the father finally awakened from his trance, looking stunned with unimaginable happiness. Sophie took a step back to let the two unite. Then, Haku led Sophie to the monster. Sophie reached out, and after touching the monster, Sophie could see the once red thread that connected the father with the monster had now turned blue and was slowly breaking apart. With a gentle bow from Haku, the monster bowed back, closing its eyes, and gradually turned blue then white, like the aura of Haku. All the energy of the monster then shot into Haku’s body. SWITCH>Haku. Sophie can feel the monster’s consciousness now at peace, resting within Haku. She can feel that this monster is a missing piece of Khun. The piece of its ancient memories now has been recollected. SWITCH>Sophie. Sophie turned her gaze back at the daughter and the father. Maybe together with Haku, they can save more people from this unfortunate calamity by restoring Khun. With a new sense of purpose and determination, Sophie kneeled to hug Haku, putting her head against Haku’s. Standing back up, Sophie is ready to continue her journey!

DREAM MENAGERIE (M.ARCH 2 THESIS)

Our project works with ‘Narrative Lego’ in producing an interactive narrative film experience for the audience that does not fixate on one singular storyline but one that lets the audiences’ decisions affect the plot, bringing a unique experience for each person as they explore different parts of the monster.

STATEMENT

This worlding project explores the ability for architecture to tell a narrative through the monstering and exaggeration of the architectural space by forming a monster that harbors the lost qualities of human culture. Our definition of the word, ‘monstering’ does not deal in the sense of simply forming the grotesque but the process of bringing unfamiliarity to the familiar. The origin of the word ‘Monster’ relates to the word ‘Demonstrate’ and its Latin form ‘Demonstrare’. To monster is to demonstrate and to reveal the wonder of a space. By extracting what is familiar to us and reconfiguring the architectural form using its essence, we tell a story that provokes memories and emotions.

The next frontier for architectural design lies with stories. Moving into the new digital era, the coming of the postAnthropocene was inevitable and makes us contemplate the role of the architect relating to our design culture. We as architects in this new era need to become story tellers as well as world builders that through our narratives design inspire and influence the human consciousness.

As architects, to tell a story is to shape space. If the narrative is the vessel for us to navigate through fiction, then the architecture within these narratives is the fabric of these worlds themselves.

Our monster represents our hopes for the retrieval of the lost qualities of our culture. Mythologies of monsters have long been a part of human history. Humans manifest and give life to these mystical creatures to better understand the incomprehensible of our society.

Within our project narrative, we aim to address the effects of today’s social media and digital information explosion through the story telling of our protagonist Sophie who finds meaning in her life through a magical adventure within the body of Kun, the Deity of Recollection. The high pace of this era makes individuals feel insignificant and isolated as we hardly know the people living next door to us. To adapt to this new age, we made sacrifices that detach ourselves from our traditions, emotions, nature, creativity, and our friends, making ourselves numb to the environment around us and lost in the purpose of life. By manifesting a unique form of architecture - a monster that harbors these discarded qualities by society, we hope that by exploring our monster with Sophie, people can find meaning in life, pursue their dreams with freedom and creativity, reimagining the possibilities of urban life or simply living life in a more positive manner.

Our project works with 'Narrative Lego' in producing an interactive narrative film experience for the audience that does not fixate on one singular storyline but one that lets the audiences' decisions affect the plot, bringing a unique experience for each person as they explore different parts of the monster. In addition to an interactive film, we have also produced a physical model to showcase the full potential of this unique architectural form. We have designed and developed a model that allows people to explore different spaces within the monster's body. With this transmedia approach, each space will have its own unique story to tell, conveyed through shape, sound effects, and lighting.

In the relentless current of this era, where the pace of life surges like an unstoppable tide, individuals find themselves adrift in a sea of insignificance and isolation. The once-familiar faces of neighbors remain distant, lost amidst the clamor of hurried existence. The tapestry of human connection frays as the threads of community loosen, leaving us estranged from those who dwell next door. In this rapid age, adaptation demands a heavy toll — a toll paid in sacrifices that sever the bonds with our traditions, emotions, and the very essence of our natural surroundings.

As the modern age unfolds its demanding script, we willingly offer up pieces of ourselves, detaching from the harmonious melodies of tradition and the vivid hues of raw emotion. Nature, once a steadfast companion, now fades into the background as concrete jungles rise. The canvas of creativity gathers dust, overshadowed by the ceaseless grind of monotonous routine. Friends, like constellations scattered across the night sky, become distant and obscured as the demands of this epoch carve chasms between hearts. With each sacrifice, we tread the path toward numbing ourselves to the vibrant world that surrounds us, inadvertently disconnecting from the very essence of existence.

The high pace of this era has propelled us into a realm where our identities are gradually eroded, our connections wane, and our lives risk becoming an undifferentiated blur of routine. As the air-conditioning units rotate ceaselessly, so do we find ourselves entangled in a vortex of detachment from our innate humanity, from our surroundings, and from the intricate symphony of existence itself.

In the midst of this relentless portrayal, a powerful metaphor takes shape — the ever-spinning air-conditioning unit. It becomes a symbol of the ceaseless cycle of mundane labor, a mechanical dance devoid of thought or emotion. The camera's gaze transitions from a solitary unit to an expanse of countless air-conditioners adorning a single towering structure, mirroring the universal reality that nearly everyone within this modern tapestry is ensnared in the web of such mundane tasks. This panoramic perspective encapsulates the essence of the scene, drawing the viewer's attention to the collective detachment from the profound elements that once defined humanity's purpose.

Torii, A torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred and a spot where kami are welcomed and thought to travel through.Torii gates were traditionally made from wood or stone, but today they can be also made of reinforced concrete, copper, stainless steel or other materials. They are usually either unpainted or painted vermilion with a black upper lintel.

Muyu

A hollow feeling surged through Sophie’s stomach as she slowly pulled loose the string on the package. It has been two weeks since she got the call from her mother that Gran Gran has passed away. This package was the parting gift that Gran Gran left for Sophie, her beloved granddaughter. Sophie had been working on the courage to open the package for a week now. ‘Why is this so hard?’ Sophie thought. But she knew the answer. Deep down Sophie feels that if she opened the package, the last remaining presence of Gran Gran would escape from her. Yet parts of her also knew she needed to see what’s inside. ‘There must be something important Gran Gran wanted to leave me.’ Frowning subconsciously with this newfound determination, Sophie brushed off the fur on the cover and opened it. Inside was a letter and a small fish-like talisman.

‘My Dear Sophie,

Please do not mourn for my passing. I will always love you in this life and the next. Time always finds its way of escaping from us. I have told your mother Trisha to send you this letter along with this Muyu to you. Do you still recognize your favorite childhood toy at the temple? You used to terrorize the entire temple with it. Spinning it along the corridors, creating all kinds of chaos. I just wanted you to know that all this time I have been keeping it by my side as a reminder of all our happy memories together. You must forgive my keen delight in nostalgia as I am old. Please keep it by your side. I know Kun will look after you as it did for me, my sweet Sophie. P.S. Please give Snowball a kiss for me.

Sophie wiping away her tears, smiling, picked up the Muyu. The wooden talisman has scratches all over its body. ‘This Muyu is no doubt the one that I used to borrow to play around with.’ Sophie can almost still hear the whistling sound that it made as she ran around the temple grounds. Sophie broke out a laughter just as she remembered how the priest end up giving her the Muyu toy after she borrowed it too many times and was too worn out to be used for the temple ritual. Sophie’s family has the tradition of hosting temple rituals each season to honor the fish deity Kun. It is said that Kun has special healing properties that can not only cure physical illnesses but can also heal the wounds of one’s soul. Sophie heard from Gran Gran as a child that in the old days The Temple of Kun was a place for healing for the sick and a resting place for the wary travelers. While the priests used herbs in the surrounding mountains to heal the patient’s body, the mind and soul needs the Muyu’s help to be cured. The Water Dance that the temple performs is a dance that uses the Muyu to connect oneself with the deity spiritually. As the temple priests spin the Muyus, it creates a harmonious domain within the temple grounds, giving all that hears it euphonious sound the blessing of Kun. Many who have witnessed the ritual are said to have dreams within magical lands that resolve their troubles and put their minds at ease. Remembering all this, Sophie wrapped the talisman’s string around her finger and started spinning it as a reminiscent sound filled her room.

As Sophie steps into the Cultural Citadel, an overwhelming sense of awe and reverence washes over her. The transition from the mundane and repressive world outside to this sacred chamber is nothing short of extraordinary. She finds herself in a space that defies her previous understanding of architecture, as though she has entered a realm where the physical and spiritual converge.

The Cultural Citadel’s entrance is marked by towering pillars reminiscent of those found in ancient cathedrals, but with a unique twist. They reach towards the heavens.

The glyphs on the walls of the Cultural Citadel reveal to Sophie the past of Kun, the Deity of Recollection that harbors all that is lost. What other secrets lie in the journey ahead? Will Sophie find what she is missing?

The murals on the walls of the Citadel narrating the epic tale of Kun in a language of art. Each brushstroke seems to pulsate with life, and the scenes depicted on the walls transcend mere images, engaging Sophie’s senses and emotions. The artwork evokes a deep connection to the Sufi society’s cultural roots, rekindling a sense of identity and heritage.

As Sophie explores this sacred space, she begins to absorb the stories and traditions of her culture that had long been suppressed in the sterile world outside. The Cultural Citadel serves as a beacon of cultural revival and a testament to the power of architecture to rekindle the spirit. Here, Sophie feels a sense of belonging, as if she has returned to a place of profound significance.

Physical Model-Emotions Chamber

The architecture of the Emotions Chamber is a masterpiece of emotional embodiment. The walls curve and undulate, mirroring the ebb and flow of human feelings. Throughout the chamber, interactive installations invite Sophie to engage with her emotions on a profound level. The play of light is a central element in the chamber's design. Spotlights strategically placed throughout the space cast beams that shift in intensity and color based on the emotional resonance of the visitors.

Physical Model-Nature Oasis

The walls and floors mimic organic forms, sculpted to resemble the shapes found in nature. Subtle hues and gradients adorn the model, painting a vivid picture of the vibrant diversity found within the Nature Oasis. It's a miniature representation that captures the essence of the organic world, inviting observers to marvel at the intricate beauty and lifelike semblance of this fantastical environment.
