Downhill Mountain Biking – What Is It? A major category of biking is known as downhill mountain biking. As its name connotes, it is the sport where one rides a mountain bike downhill. It is one of the most dangerous and edgy variations of mountain biking. Downhill mountain biking involves jumping and traversing risky trails of three to twelve meters. Generally, the trail is rough from top to bottom. In general competitions, a trail is typically finished in two to five minutes. The first trial race on downhill mountain biking was held on October 22, 1976 in Fairfax, California on a fire road now called Repack Road. The race was participated by ten riders in a 1,300 feet distance which was completed in five minutes. Back then, the bikes in use were known as ‘paperboy bikes’ or ‘clunkers’. This variant of mountain biking soon became popular as a summer sport in countries with a lot of slopes. It was only during the 1900s that the official mountain bike was born. They consisted of dual crown suspension forks and disc brakes with an elaborated frame design. In 2006, the normal design for suspension travel is 203mm or 8 inches. It was so made to better meet the rigors of sudden drops and jumps common to downhill mountain biking. The newer designs allowed better control during high speeds and in corners. Those who undertake downhill mountain biking should wear full body armor to prevent serious injuries. They must have a unique combination of total body strength. They must also possess aerobic and anaerobic fitness as well as mental control. Ideally, their downhill mountain bikes must have a weight of 16-20 kilos to qualify for this game. This biking is a gravity assisted time trial mountain biking event. The race starts within 30 seconds, with riders racing against time at top speed. It is normally completed in five minutes or less. The riders are rated with equipments similar with those used in downhill skiing competitions. High speed descents, avoiding obstacles, and daredevil jumps are common fare for this extreme sport. Downhill mountain biking is an extreme sport that needs skill and focus not only to win but to survive as well. Click here -> Read more Downhill Mountain Biking
