JIANGNAN INDUSTRY PARK DESIGN

Individual Work Duration: four months

1

PROJECT BACKGROUND This project is located in Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China. The original electric factory primarily provides regional electric service during the last 50 years. However, as the society developing, the factory is less effective and utilized in providing electric power. The design area is where the electric factory was located and it is becoming an abandoned area with aged industrial building and facilities. The place has no people to visit and work anymore except the homeless. To reuse this abandoned land and revive the local environment, there is a great need to transform the industrial area to a new-developed community park. The effort to remove the existing structure and facilities is expensive, so I would like to inherit the industrial spirit by maintaining them as the landmark and create innovative landscape environment to remind people the local history with distinct features.

Existing road system

Existing districts The electric industry inspires me to borrow the distinct elements like spark and electric wave, and conbine with the local “Tong culture to create a memorial and unique symbol for the site.

DESIGN GOALS By analyzing the major user groups and their expected qualities for this community park, I develop four major topics to design this recreational, cultural, and environmental park further. To meet this criterion, I would start with the design concept and define more details as follows.

SITE MAP The site design respects the existing structure and develops multiple spaces along the main pathway which guides visitors to walk through major attractions. There are many scales of spaces I provide for diverse user groups. Open spaces like the creek, terrace plaza and outdoor theater for large group gathering and activities. Semi-open spaces like garden, shrub maze are designed for people to have the family fun time. The intimate spaces with semi-closure and high canopy provide quite an environment for meditation

PROJECT BACKGROUND

The design area is located near the Qing Xiu Lake which is the largest ecological ake area in the city. The site has about 80 acres, and the major surrounding land is for the residential use. To advocate a more healthy lifestyle, and enhance the living atmosphere for the citizen, this design aims to create outdoor, and natural urban spaces are encouraging people in different ages to engage in the outdoor exercise and group activities. Besides, to bring in more dynamic activities and events to the site, the design would introduce lighting facilities that enrich the night life of the visitors, including night light run, music fountain show, and illuminated structure, these elements would form better safe spaces and beautiful attractions at night that increase the diversity

The design is developed around the Qing Xiu Lake that diverse activities are designed associated with the current forest, waterfront area. The existing site has great green coverage which provides a pleasant natural environment for people who like biking, jogging, and camping. I developed loops with different distance for diverse user groups depend on their exercise survey. Besides, the attractions are distributed along the lakefront area to give visitors multi-scales spaces to relax and play.

I design the diverse waterfront plazas for people to enjoy the lake view. To give visitors, a closer view of the landscape here are three scales of the parkway for options. The parkway allows biker and walker to stop at the recreational area, plaza or wooden bridge, and get to know more about the wetland and the wild life. The tall trees provide shady areas for people to rest and the lake area brings in breeze which create pleasant and natural environment.

The areas with dense tree coverage would be turned into vegetable gardens, forest and camping ground that give visitors opportunities to learn about plantings, growing vegetables and get closer to the nature. This would be a colorful and joyful area that full of seasonal change and harvest. Adults and children would gain knowledge, fruit, and happiness from outdoor labour

Biking Trail

Increasing the planting species and introducing the wetland planting help to enhance the ground infiltration and drain the surface runoff to the lake. It is beneficial for the environment to reduce the soil erosion and hold the hydration by the planting roots. Children would learn from growing plants and understand the significance of protecting the nature.

BACKGROUND

Guangxi Province, China

Nanning City, Guangxi

This project is located in Nanning City, Guangxi Province, China. The original community has over thirty years old where the employee of civic railways bureau and their family live here. Due to the community and facilities are getting old, here is a great need to renovate the street and the surrounding environment. The design goal is to create a walkable and inviting space for the residents and bring in local history and culture for building a historical community.

SITE PLAN The streetscape is divided into three regions with different themes. The entrance area would have aligned trees with signage wall giving the welcome atmosphere to the visitors. People would go through the entrance structure which remembers them the former railway and the local culture. As they walk on the greenway, they would experience a dynamic and inviting place that brings breeze and available seating area aside from the road.

LEISURE PLAZA

This Leisure Plaza is designed for people to relax and enjoy the nature. The place is surrounded by tall trees which not only reduce the traffic noise but also create a shady and peaceful area. People can sit aside the creek and have a meditation area. The plaza design concept is inspired by the beehive which creates multiple spaces for different activity purposes. I use hexagon as the basic design element to create different and interesting landscape features to attract people, such as raised bench, pavilion and pavement. 1 Sunken Plaza 2 Artificial Creek 3 Reading Corner 4 Hexagonal Seating

PROJECT BACKGROUND Chao Yang Creek is one of the most vital tributaries in the Hu River system which goes through the historic residential area in Nanning City. It witnesses the region’s development as the nearby residential, commercial and historical areas are gaining more value. This design aims to improve the ecological environment along the creek and create a eco-friendly outdoor area. By providing diverse planting organizations and river bank management, it increases the efficiency of regional water source recycle and surface runoff infiltration.

The emphasis of this project design is to create a resilient city which has ability to handle the flooding problem by introducing the appropriate landscape design solutions

Through the detailed site survey, I investigate the creek-side environment and neighborhood and reveal six major problems the site encountered. As the regional population density arise, more and more housing and traffic bring the worse situation to the surrounding environment. Too much concrete paving increases the crisis of flooding and soil erosion to the site. The main task of this design is to renovate the water bank and bring new vitality to the greening River bank renovation

WATER POLLUTION CONTROL STRATEGIES

The water pollution and wetland restoration strategies are adapted with three phases of water control with ecological methods. Through the collaboration of planting purification and micro-biological degradation, they gradually reduce the level of water pollution. The wetland acts as the critical part in the natural filtration process which reduces the pollution flowing to the creek while bringing the planting and wildlife diversity to the site.
