SERVICE QUALITY & SERVICE COMPLIMENTS

On 30 June 2015, we began a new chapter at JurongHealth with the opening of the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH). After five extraordinary years of building our teams, preparation and camaraderie at Alexandra Hospital (AH), months of commissioning and defects check, and multiple rounds of full dress rehearsals, we opened our doors at 8.30am to look after the residents in the west!

With the opening of NTFGH, we also closed our chapter at AH when we moved all 19 of our last patients from AH to NTFGH on 29 June 2015. With months of preparation and planning, the Patient Move Committee led by Mr Ng Kian Swan (Assistant Chief Operating Officer for Service Operations and Director of Operations, Jurong Community Hospital) and Dr Quek Lit Sin (Head, Emergency Medicine), engineered a precise and safe transfer of our patients, ensuring that they were cared for with compassion and dignity throughout the transfer as they settled into their new environment at NTFGH.

03 30 june On day one, we opened a total of 365 general/ critical care beds and 76 community beds (located at wards 14 and 15), 80 specialist outpatient clinics and the Emergency Department for walk-in cases only. To ensure patients and visitors get to the right locations, our Patient Service Associates stationed themselves at lifts, lobbies and outside every clinic floor to lend a helping hand. Partnering them were our Friends of JurongHealth volunteers who doubled up as greeters and guiders at the main lobby. 80 volunteers will be spotted around our hospitals to assist patients and caregivers with wayfinding. Led by Mr Foo Hee Jug (Chief Executive Officer), some members of the senior management team also welcomed our first inpatients and outpatients with a healthy apple treat to thank them for choosing us as their healthcare partner.

Level two of Tower A - NTFGH Clinics experienced the greatest buzz. Home to a retail pharmacy, Medical Social Service office, Pre-Surgery Evaluation clinic and future F&B outlets, it is also conveniently linked to our neighbours, Westgate mall and Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability as part of J-Walk, URA’s elevated pedestrian network to provide a convenient, sheltered path for the community. Via Westgate mall, patients and visitors can access public transport such as the Jurong East MRT station and Jurong East bus interchange with ease!

All Hands on Deck in the Lead-up... Engage relives the past few crucial months that have culminated in our successful opening of the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) on 30 June 2015 and closure of Alexandra Hospital (AH) beginning with the slew of Full Dress Rehearsals (FDR) that took departments and our whole hospital by storm.

3

March From 23 March 2015 to mid-June 2015, colleagues participated in a series of department and hospital FDRs to familiarise themselves with new patient-centred systems and processes, which include our Electronic Medical Record, EPIC, Visitor Management System and One Queue, One Bill System at all Specialist Outpatient Clinics.

05

4

April The JurongHealth monumental logo was installed at the junction of Tower A - NTFGH Clinics and Tower B - NTFGH Wards on 16 April 2015 to provide an anchor presence for JurongHealth. On 24 April 2015, tarring of the grounds at the Jurong Community Hospital’s mobility park commenced as we count down to installing ramps, steps, textured surfaces, a taxi, bus and train carriage for the first rehabilitation park that offers lifesized mock-ups to help patients transit back to the community safely and confidently.

5

May On 18 and 19 May 2015, a mass fire drill was conducted at Tower A - NTFGH Clinics and Tower B - NTFGH Wards to familiarise colleagues with safe evacuation in the event of a fire. The exercise showed key assembly areas and colleagues convened at the respective areas in a good time. Over at the ICU, the exercise included mock patients in beds as the team practiced evacuating safely with nurses from Ward B6. Between 20 to 22 May 2015, auditors from the Ministry of Health held a Licensing and Inspection audit on our facilities, processes and policies to ensure we were ready to serve our community. Prior to the inspection, colleagues participated in Licensing and Audit roadshows from 11 to 14 May 2015. Teams who participated include the Emergency Department, ICU, Operating Theatres, Specialist Outpatient Clinics, Wards, Food Service, etc.

07

6

june We received the Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) for Tower C - Jurong Community Hospital and our two external link bridges to Westgate shopping mall and Big Box on 5 June 2015. On the same day, the Jurong Community Hospital (JCH) team practiced transferring mock patients to the National University Hospital when they participated in an Initial Response Team full dress rehearsal. On 9 June 2015, a table-top exercise was also held with partners to simulate a patient transfer from AH to NTFGH to familiarise all with crucial routes and procedures. Over 10,000 wayfinding and instructional signage were installed throughout June 2015 to offer clear and accurate signage to patients and visitors seeking clinical, allied health and other services at NTFGH and JCH. On 11 June 2015, we also welcomed the bust of our donor, Mr Ng Teng Fong, in honour of his vision, grit and resilience that has helped keep many of his dreams alive. His hopeful spirit lives on to inspire many of his pioneering achievements. An exercise to practice the safe transfer of patients from AH to NTFGH was conducted on 15 June 2015 involving 40 colleagues from Clinical departments, Nursing, Operations Support Service (Facilities Management, Portering and Security), Service Operations and the Patient Move committee and workgroup ahead of our actual patient move on 29 June 2015. From 18 to 29 June 2015, 19 patients from Wards 4 and 5 were also moved from AH to Wards 14 and 15 at NTFGH to continue their care at our new hospitals.

Visiting hours in the Ward To ensure patients get to recover in comfort, visiting hours are in place at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) and Jurong Community Hospital (JCH) to minimise overcrowding. Known as the Visitor Management System (VMS), each patient is allowed up to a maximum of four visitors during the visiting hours of 12.00pm to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 8.30pm at NTFGH, and 10.00am to 8.30pm at JCH. These visiting hours apply for all days of the week. Should a patient’s number of visitors exceed four, subsequent visitors will be placed on a waiting list and be notified via SMS once there is an available slot. Visitors of critically-ill patients can visit their loved ones at all times of the day. Visitors are discouraged from bringing babies or children under 7 years old into the wards or Intensive Care/High Dependency due to their lower immunity. Beyond managing crowds in the wards, the VMS also allows JurongHealth to perform crucial contact tracing in the event of a pandemic.

Ways Visitors Can Register Their Visit

Go to www.ntfgh.com.sg or www.jch.com.sg to register before coming to the hospitals Register at a Self-Registration Kiosk on arrival (NRIC or passport is required) Approach the Visitor Registration Counter for assistance

Upon successful registration, a registration label will be issued.

Jurong H ea l t h part of an integral itals our new hosp

In the lead up to our opening, 80 Friends of JurongHealth or volunteers undertook rigourous training to prepare themselves for their new role. Managed by Community Relations (CR), they are part of JurongHealth’s family and serve as Greeters and Guiders to assist patients and visitors around the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and the Jurong Community Hospital. A get-to-know-you session was conducted between April to May 2015 to understand their needs and train them on new systems such as the Lobby Management and Visitor Management System. Playing a complementary role to our patient greeters, volunteers are the first point of contact for many. They were enrolled in Service Quality’s Bringing out the A+ in Us training to further acquaint them with best service practices. As part of their training, they also learnt to manoeuver a wheelchair under the supervision of our physiotherapist and occupational therapist, and had three sessions of wayfinding Full Dress Rehearsals to familiarise themselves with the many areas and features of our new hospitals. We want to say a big “Thank You” to our friendly volunteers!

Hosting Community Partners to NTFGH On 14, 20 and 27 June 2015, advisers and grassroots leaders from South West District previewed our Emergency Department (ED), Specialist Outpatient Clinics (SOC), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Wards, and link bridges at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH). Over 258 representatives from Ayer Rajah, Boon Lay, Bukit Batok West, Choa Chu Kang, Jurong, West Coast, Yew Tee and Yuhua GRCs, etc dropped by as Mr Foo Hee Jug (Chief Executive Officer), A/Prof Cheah Wei Keat (Chairman, Medical Board), members of Senior Management and colleagues from Community Relations, Communications and Community led them around our integrated towers to learn about the new, patient-centred features of our new hospitals for the community in the west.

11 Families of staff also visited our new home on 21 June 2015 and toured the ED, SOC, ICU, Wards and internal link bridges to learn about patient-centred features that put the community first.

On 20 June 2015, representatives from the Healthcare Services Employees’ Union (HSEU) also stopped by NTFGH to tour our facilities. Hosted by Ms Anna Fok (Chief Human Resource Officer) and the Human Resource team, they include Ms Diana Chia (HSEU General Secretary), Ms K Thanalatchimi (HSEU President), HSEU’s Executive Council members and industrial relations officers.

at Our

Party Close to 2,000 colleagues came together at our Housewarming Party on 12 June 2015 and participated in activities to get to know the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Specialist Outpatient Clinics (SOC), Wards and link bridges, etc in NTFGH. With the support of Food Service, they got to sample patient meals prepared via the cook-chill way. At Tower A - NTFGH Clinics, the first 100 colleagues who stopped by the Eye clinic also received a complimentary eye acuity test as they checked out the new SOCs. At each pit stop, staff collected stamps to redeem a limited edition JurongHealth mug. All 2,000 mugs were fully-redeemed in under two hours as staff raced to complete their tour of our new home! It was also a night of dazzling staff talents as Ms Sabina Safarudin of IHIS and the Shalala team of colleagues from Business Office, Finance and Legal wowed the floor with their song and dance performance. The Ah Boys to Uncles trio comprising Mr Lim Soo Tong (Chief Information Officer, Information Technology), Mr Tan Tai Soon (Director, Hospital Planning) and Mr Joel Tan (Director, Operations Support Services) also entertained with their rendition of Unbelievable, a song made popular by MediaCorp actor, Chen Tianwen, on YouTube.

To the delight of many, our favourite canteen aunties from Alexandra Hospital (AH) made surprise appearances that evening. Many will remember Joyce and Wendy from the fruit stall at AH who slipped into their alter-egos as the Starfruit Sisters that evening and dazzled with a song and dance performance. Aunty Helen, a favourite of many, melted hearts with her sizzling performance. Among the many highlights that evening was a video chronicling our preparations to open NTFGH safely and smoothly on 30 June 2015. Heartwarming interviews and candid insights by colleagues from Biomedical Engineering, Information Technology, Pharmacy, Radiology, Nursing, Surgery, etc touched many as they recalled their own journey to arrive at this moment. In celebration of JurongHealth’s sixth birthday, a cake in the form of our integrated hospitals also made an appearance on stage as Senior Management and board members led all in a birthday song. Thank you for being a part of this historic milestone - as a JurongHealth family!

A e r S A tar’ u o Y ‘ Thank You Party

To recognise colleagues for their contribution towards the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, Medical Informatics (MI) organised a thank you party on 16 June 2015. Mr Foo Hee Jug (Chief Executive Officer) thanked all Change Readiness Officers for facilitating their departments’ transition to the EMR and commended them on the instrumental role they played in their respective teams’ Go-Live. Adjunct Associate Prof Gamaliel Tan (Chief Medical Information Officer and Head and Senior Consultant, Orthopaedics) expressed his heartfelt thanks to all for their support, which has enabled MI to successfully build the EMR.

19 Watch Your Music Volume On 16 May 2015, Mr Gary Lee (Principal Audiologist, Audiology) and his team did JurongHealth proud when they received first prize for their paper, The music listening preferences and habits of youths in Singapore and its relation to leisure noise-induced hearing loss. Receiving the Best Research Paper 2014 award from A/Prof Poh Kian Keong (Editor, Singapore Medical Journal), their findings were published in the Singapore Medical Journal.

Joint effort to improve hearing in youths (L-R): A/Prof Poh Kian Keong (Editor, Singapore Medical Journal), Mrs Lee, Mr Gary Lee (Principal Audiologist, Audiology) and Dr Euan Murugasu (Head and Senior Consultant, ENT)

Mr Lee shared that the team was fueled by a passion to educate young Singaporeans against the harmful effects of listening to loud music for long hours on music players. Their research further led them to delve into cochlear (inner ear) damage, which was published in the International Journal of Audiology in 2014.

Healthcare Humanity Awards 2015 We congratulate Ms Jasmine Goh (Principal Enrolled Nurse, Cardiology Clinic) for receiving the Healthcare Humanity Award (HHA) for three decades of contribution as a nurse. Cheered on by colleagues and friends, Ms Goh received the award from Guest of Honour and Courage Fund Patron, Dr Tony Tan, President of Singapore. The HHA honours exemplary healthcare professionals who go beyond the call of duty to help others. In the words of Dr Tony Tan, they are “inspiring role models who have made a difference to the community. Ms Goh, who is known to go the extra mile for patients, keeps in touch with them after their discharge, and volunteers on a regular basis. In 2011, she received a long service award for efforts in community service.

Proud JurongHealth moment (L-R): A/Prof Cheah Wei Keat (Chairman, Medical Board), Madam Kuttiammal Sundarasan (Chief Nurse), Ms Chee Thong Gan (Assistant Chief Operating Officer, Clinical Services and Head, Allied Health), Ms Jasmine Goh (Principal Enrolled Nurse, Cardiology Clinic), Ms Koay Siew Khim (Nurse Clinician, Medicine Clinic) and Mr Foo Hee Jug (Chief Executive Officer)

Helping More In The Community Stay Well As part of the SG50 celebrations, we partnered the SG50Kita Committee and Muslims Healthcare Professionals Association (MHPA) to offer complimentary health screenings to our community. Held at the Jurong Spring Community Club on 21 June 2015, it was a fruitful time for 69 residents as they learnt to stay healthy with tips by JurongHealth colleagues and MHPA. Such collaborations have opened doors to partner like-minded organisations to bring health to our community. Plans are already underway to collaborate with the Health Promotion Board, National Kidney Foundation and South West Community Development Council (SWCDC) to reach out to residents to stay well. With the SWCDC, women eligible for mammograms can opt to have them done closer to home with the convenience of Jurong Medical Centre serving the needs of residents in the west. Simple health checks and counselling are also offered by the MHPA as part of its continual efforts to help residents stay healthy and well.

Left Giving a thumbs up to stay well together! Right Combined health screening effort (L-R): Mr Lew Jong Jeng (Constituency Manager, Jurong Spring Community Club), Ms Grace Koh (Executive, Community Education, National Kidney Foundation), Ms Gayle Tan (Senior Executive, Community, JurongHealth), Ms Adelin Lim (Senior Manager, Community, JurongHealth), Dr Mohamed Ghazali (Participating GP), Ms Roberta Wong (Assistant Manager, National Kidney Foundation), Dr Elly Sabrina (Participating GP) and Ms Amy Ko (Manager, South West CDC)

I did not know what to expect when I signed up for the Weight Management programme, but Dr Tey’s warmth and assuring manner encouraged me. Ms Ng was also one of the best coordinators I have met. She is encouraging and reminds participants of their appointments cheerfully and always plans our schedules well so that tests and measurements can be done with ease. Dietitians, Ms Lim and Mr Han, were also very warm and gave us good advice and an easyto-follow diet plan. Ms Lim’s guidance further helped me to adjust my food portions and pick healthy food. Diploma in Nursing

Enrolled Nurse, Nursing Administration Learning Award Recipient - Diploma in Nursing (Current 2nd Year student at Nanyang Polytehnic)

I am grateful to Sister Chia Guat Tin (Senior Nurse Manager, Ward B10 Private) for believing in my potential for further education. I am also impressed with JurongHealth and the support it extends to staff. With this diploma, I look forward to becoming a Breast Care Nurse someday.

Mr Lancelot Chua Senior Executive, Allied Health Learning Award Recipient – Masters

Hitting the books again was harder than I thought but the experience has allowed me to combine my knowledge of work with classroom topics. Classroom concepts are often built on work experience and this co-relation gave me greater clarity and creativity at work. Education is not about sitting behind one’s desk or good grades. It is about the journey: reading, exploring, asking good questions and seeking answers. I discovered there is so much out there to be learnt!

Mr Saw Yik Chuen Principal Clinical Pharmacist, Pharmacy Learning Award Recipient - Masters in Clinical Pharmacy

I am thankful to JurongHealth for both my HMDP opportunities. In Chicago, I learnt about the specifics of heart failure management and it opened my eyes to what pharmacists could do. With my second HMDP, I returned to develop a pharmacist heart failure clinic for JurongHealth to titrate medications for patients in between hospital visits to help them live longer and make fewer return trips. This journey has showed me how important it is for healthcare staff to constantly upgrade themselves in order to help patients stay well.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

Stay Active! Eat Right! Think Positive! Appreciate Much!

Helping Colleagues Stay Energised! As colleagues put up the final touches in their respective areas for the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital’s opening, Human Resource (HR) dropped by offices to dish out energiser kits to encourage all to press on in this last leg of preparations. Led by Mr Foo Hee Jug (Chief Executive Officer) and together with senior leaders and volunteers from different departments, they came together to pack over 4,000 energiser kits for staff. Each contained goodies sponsored by various HR partners, and stayed true to the themes, “Stay Active”, “Eat Right”, “Think Positive” and “Appreciate Much”.

a Big

To thank all for their commitment to open the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) safely and smoothly on 30 June 2015, our senior leaders went around the hospital distributing Pioneer bears to staff between 30 June 2015 to 2 July 2015. It was simply our way of thanking all for your grit, resilience and commitment during our preparations and transition from Alexandra Hospital to NTFGH. Those on night shift received their bears from Mr Foo Hee Jug (Chief Executive Officer), Madam Kuttiammal Sundarasan (Chief Nurse) and our Human Resource colleagues. Many were touched that our senior leaders would personally walk the grounds to present them with a token.

To the JurongHealth

Family!

The opening of NTFGH and Jurong Community Hospital could not have been possible without all your combined efforts. Thank you!
