CAN CASUAL CABIN CREW ALLEVIATE PRESSURE ON EXPANDING AIRLINES? With aircraft orders reaching new heights and expansion of carriers going stronger than ever, continuously finding suitable cabin crew is becoming more of a challenge for airlines that depend on expat cabin crew such as Emirates, Etihad and many in the Mena region and many expanding airlines around the globe.
8
Recruiting from all across the globe for a job that requires relocation, adaptation to new cultures and multicultural work environments is the number one challenge for Human Resource departments across the aviation industry which relies on expats.
Human resource departments are working around the clock to provide for this expansive industry
It is vital to take into account that the rapid expansion of some airlines and delivery of air crafts is outstripping the availability of quality and experienced candidates. In turn, this is creating an adverse effect on the quality of service received by passengers. Human resource departments are working around the clock to provide for this expansive industry, numbers have to be met, ongoing training courses are scheduled, and flights need to be operated with full set of crew. No doubt airlines have experienced recruitment teams with sophisticated recruitment procedures to assess and recruit candidates from around the globe. But with the process takes between 3 to 6 months-- even more in some cases-- from the time a candidate submits their interest or attends a walk-in interview, to the time they get their wings. Add another 3 to 6 months to build experience and confidence, and Voila! You have 1 year of waiting, recruiting, training, assessing, and appraising before you have a fully-fledged experienced Cabin crew member. So how do your resolve such a dilemma and speed up the process without compromising on quality, screening and training? The solution is simple and has been used in other industries for decades as well as in the airline industry itself for carriers that do not necessarily rely on expats.

The airline cost associated with re-employing and reactivating the casual cabin crew is much lower than the cost associated with new recruits
Casual Cabin Crew Casual staffing can no doubt be a very effective solution by re-employing loyal, experienced crew who have worked for the airline for a number of years and had to resign to fly private, have a family, take a break, further their education or simply for personal reasons. These candidates still reside in the same country and still meet the Cabin crew criteria set by the airline, such as age, security clearance and presentation. Interested experienced cabin crew can be recalled to reapply, undergo a refresher course and operate under different contractual terms and conditions.

ÂŤIMPOSSIBLE WHILE FLYING IS JUST AN EXCUSEÂť Meet Lou, 29 from the U.K. Cabin crew for nearly 4 years with one of the worlds leading airlines based in the United Arab Emirates.
Lou's Story Meet Lou, 29 from the U.K. Cabin crew for nearly 4 years with one of the worlds leading airlines based in the United Arab Emirates.
Guaranteed you hear this chat in the galley every day 'Flying has made me fat!', 'I have no time to train!' and 'I'm always so tired!'. Here's my truth. I've never been in better shape, had healthier skin and hair or felt more happy and energised than I do now as cabin crew! I'm no expert, just a regular girl hoping to inspire and help people make changes to live their best life possible. There really are no barriers to a fit lifestyle, not age/money/time and especially not flying. To say I was unhealthy and unhappy in my early twenties is an understatement. After 4 years at University studying Archaeology I moved to work in hospitality in New Zealand, where my unhealthy lifestyle of two meals a day, no exercise and partying continued. 3 years ago I reached crisis point and realised something had to change. I was eating a little better and feeling okay but it was discovering FITNESS that changed the game. A chance meeting enroute to Shanghai with one of my now best friends led me to my first back squat at Crossfit and I've never looked back.
12
Healthy Habits - 'We are what we repeatedly do' Change your daily habits and you change your life. Make fitness a habit. Try some local classes until you find an activity you enjoy that makes you sweat. For me its INNERFIGHT Crossfit. Ladies, Don't be afraid of those weights they're the best way to build lean muscle and get that fat burning. I train 4-5x a week mixing up Crossfit with layover workouts. Try a short Tabata workout if the hotel gym isn't great/jump into a local exercise class or go running/hiking. All great ways to explore a destination and make new friends. Be selective of what you are putting in your body. Feed your body with the fuel it deserves. You wouldn't use olive oil to fuel a Boeing777. Stick to as unprocessed and as fresh as possible. Start small, change up your diet (swap white rice for brown etc) and prepare meals for your flights. I usually take baked sweet potato/green veg/avocado and add the chicken/fish without sauce from the onboard meals (it's a

myth that these meals make you fat. It's 5 casseroles/cheese&biscuits/soft drinks doing that). Take healthy snacks like almonds/olives/homemade energy balls and hydrate with plenty of water. Green tea is great for a boost but use caffeine wisely. Just make sure you eat! Eating less does not equal a healthy body. Nutritious food and drink help keep your energy levels up on those long shifts. On the layovers if you can't pack any foods like bananas/oatmeal/tuna because of customs, then have a quick online search for local supermarkets/healthy cafes. Hotel room service can also be simple like asking for boiled chicken/broccoli and steamed rice in China. Finally. Train your biggest 'muscle', your brain. A positive mind and great mental health is so important for our work. Get happy (those endorphins really help) and focused with small and long term goals. Keep a journal of your journey, feel good moments and

fitness progress and reward yourself (maybe with new Nikes in New York or that Pain au chocolat in Paris). Try switching off the TV and get studying. Being healthy is so much easier the more you educate yourself and know how your body works. Take time on the crew bus to listen to Podcasts and read fitness articles. And ten minutes a day to meditate or sit in silence and calm your mind helps me. Guys, don't be afraid of yoga, stretching will help your muscles grow and a stress free body sleeps and recovers better. Something vital to me is my network of support and motivation. I am blessed to be surrounded by fellow fit flyers and truly inspirational coaches/locals/expats in my Crossfit family. Your circle is vital. If you surround yourself with negative/lazy/unfit friends then don't be surprised if you become the same. If you struggle to find support then social media is a fantastic tool to engage with people.

Be a Goal Digger Flying can take over your life. Goals on the ground help. Last year I set myself a massive challenge. Entering my first body building competition. Some colleagues told me this was madness, impossible with our flying lifestyle but I knew I could do it. After a year of training and intense research (lots of maths and macros) I began a 12 week prep. Training my own plan 7x 5 days a week and following my own custom made carb-cycling meal plan eating 6x a day. Different time zones/tiredness/ food access were no barrier. I dropped to 10.5% bodyfat and stepped up on that stage with muscles and smile popping. I loved every second, believing from that moment on that anything is possible! I've met some incredible crew who also compete/run marathons/represent their country at sports and dominate in their life outside of the aircraft. So love yourself enough to take responsility for your health and fitness and your one amazing life. Just make a start today as small or as epic as you like and enjoy the world of the Fit Flyer.

(1 for each crew member on your flight or all for youself on a 15 hours flight) Hi, I'm Holly, an Aussie girl living in Dubai. I've been cabin crew for almost 13 years so I understand the ups and downs of the job and how it can affect your health and wellbeing. Throughout my years of flying I have always maintained an active lifestyle, seeing the job as an opportunity to try all sorts of awesome things like white water rafting, horse riding, snorkeling and hiking. I'm also a keen Crossfit athlete, having competed at a regional level. While it's super important to keep active, eating a clean, healthy diet is a must to keep at the top of your game. This has led me to writing a Paleo food blog, a way of life I believe whole heartedly in. Through the JAC magazine, I will share with you my simple Paleo Follow Holly and her recipes for dining at home, meals to amazing fitness and take onboard and snacks on the go. Will JAC be opened to other members of the airline industry? After research and few surveys we have found that there is the need to expand this platform to other department in the airline industry. We will be launching a special membership scheme in December of 2015.
I wish to use JAC but not disclose required documentation to JAC. Unfortunately it is not feasible to do so; all terms and condition must be adhered to if you choose to join JAC. Is JAC a global platform? JAC is a global platform and is available to any air crew as mentioned previously. Expansion plans are in place to offer discount offers at a global level and to maintain a Free membership.
I have been blocked, what could be the reason? There are multiple reasons why you could have been blocked. The most common one is that you failed to abide by the terms and conditions whilst downloading the app. Instead of your profile picture you took a picture of the cat or the mountain. Instead of a valid airline ID you have sent us a picture of another loyalty card or your drivers license. JAC is an exclusive airline community platform, we take our members identity seriously as we need to ensure the offers are to be used by airline crew only and not outsiders trying to take advantage of the platform. Another reason to have been blocked, is that you could have been reported by other members for inappropriate use of the community platform. Evidence have to be provided for JAC to block you.
Is JAC affiliated with any airline? JAC is an independent platform serving crew from all airlines around the globe and is not exclusive or affiliated to any carrier or region. At JAC we believe the airline community is one big family.
If you have have any inquires please contact us on social@justaircrew.com

AVIATION TEAM WORK FUNDAMENTALS BY DR. GUILLERMO GOMEZ, MBA, LPSY. In the Commercial Aviation Sector the essential difference in service is not machines or 'things.' The essential difference is your teamwork's minds, hearts, spirits, and souls. If you're crazy enough to do what you love for a living, then you're bound to create a life that matters. The success of any airline relies on treating your team as customers. Success in today's work world is more about team than individual. A team is more than just a group of workers, located together, doing their jobs. Real teams are interdependent. That means they must rely on one another to get the job done. So what are best practices for effective teams? Here are 10 rules from a chapter on "Best Practices in Team Leadership" by Kevin Stagl, Eduardo Salas, and C.Shawn Burke.
22
1. Define and Create Interdependencies. There is a need to define and structure team members' roles. Think of sports teams, everyone has their position to play, and success happens when all of the players are playing their roles effectively. In soccer, the grace of synchronicity is beautiful example of team interdependency. 2. Establish Goals. Teams need to be focused on shared goals and outcomes. Commitment to that goal is essential for success. Ideally, team goals should allow both the team as a unit and the individual members to achieve both personal and group goals. 3. Determine How Teams Will Make Decisions. Whether the leader makes the decision, or it is a democratic or consensus process, the team needs to understand beforehand how decisions will be made. This reduces conflict within the team when a decision or choice has to be made.
4. Provide Clear and Constant Feedback. Teams need to know how they are doing in order to stay motivated and to correct performance problems or inefficiencies. Ideally, a system should be in place so that team members receive ongoing feedback while doing their jobs. A simple example from manufacturing is when the team members do both production and quality control testing. They find out immediately what their success/failure rate is and can take action to improve. 5. Keep Team Membership Stable. Particularly in complex tasks, it takes a lot of time for team members to learn to work together at an optimum level. In sports, there is a relationship between how long team members have played together and their winning record. 6. Allow Team Members to Challenge the Status Quo. If innovation is important, it is critical that team members feel secure in being able to challenge processes if they feel that there is a way to improve. In order to innovate, teams need to be open to considering and constructively criticizing existing practices when needed.
23
JUST AIR CREW
7. Learn How to Identify and Attract Talent. Just as processes sometimes need improvement, teams can get better by attracting new talent. Organizations that put a lot of resources into identifying and recruiting talent simply do better. 8. Use Team-Based Reward Systems. Too much emphasis on individual rewards can lead to in-fighting and resentment. A combination of individual and team-based rewards is often best. 9. Create a Learning Environment. Emphasize the development of the team, learning through successes, but particularly through mistakes. A team with a culture of continuous improvement and where members are motivated to

develop their skills and knowledge are high-performing teams. 10. Focus on the Collective Mission. Mission-driven teams and organizations perform better because they see beyond their individual workload and tasks and feel as if they are working for a higher purpose. It is imperative that team members be committed to the shared mission, or they should be replaced. These rules apply whether teams have a formal, appointed leader, or whether they are self-governing. The key is to put in the time and energy needed to adhere to these best practices. Vamos!!!
THE TRAGEDY OF OUR TIME IS THAT WE'VE GOT IT BACKWARDS, WE'VE LEARNED TO LOVE TECHNIQUES AND USE THE TEAM. THE "STRATEGIC PLAN" IS IN EVERY FLIGHT TO CREATE AN IN-FLIGHT EXPERIENCE IN A PASSIONATE MANNER.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS: WHAT TO PACK WHEN PLANNING AN ADVENTURE ANYWHERE
Time and time again, I am asked questions by people all over the globe about how to sustain a traveler’s lifestyle. Among the most popular, is the matter of what to bring. What are the essentials? The bare-minimum basics that one should pack when preparing for a trip? How do you keep your pack light? How do you stay healthy? In this article I share a list of essentials that I always carry with me, no matter the destination.*
26
In my Osprey Aether 60 Backpack I pack:
Health Supplements: Grapefruit Seed Extract – Keeps your immune system strong– I swear by this stuff! At the first feeling of low immunity, I take two of these a day till I’m good as new.
Manuka Honey – Containing high amounts of methylglyoxal (MG), manuka is famous for its anti-bacterial properties, and is a supercharged anti-inflammatory and pain-reliever. A teaspoon a day keeps you strong, can also be used as face mask or balm for wounds– repairing tissue by fostering new cell growth. Turmeric – Containing bio-active compounds with powerful medicinal properties, turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, increases antioxidant capacity of the body, is linked with improved brain function and has been known to lower risk of heart disease. Turmeric has been found to potentially prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and depression. In other words, turmeric is something we should all be consuming on a regular basis! I like to mix a teaspoon with lukewarm water and fresh lemon juice first thing each morning. Activated Charcoal – Helps detox and absorb toxins from your body, especially in emergency situations. Charcoal also relieves bug bites / stings, and any disorders you may experience from eating foods your stomach isn’t accustomed to.
Vitamin C – Very important to supplement vitamin C especially if you are not eating a balanced daily diet full of fruits and veggies. Vitamin C is a key protective element against cardiovascular disease, improving blood flow, lowering cholesterol, among other well known benefits.
27
Probiotics: Kefir Crystals – Probiotics are healthy bacteria that aid your gut in its natural processes. The easiest way to ensure you are intaking probiotics regularly, is by making kefir water.
JUST AIR CREW
Essential Oils: Tea Tree – A natural antiseptic, tea tree is indispensable. It is important to mix it with a carrier oil, as it is so powerful it will quickly dry out your skin. Use tea tree to disinfect and clean wounds, or your toothbrush! The possibilities are endless. Oregano Oil – One of nature’s most powerful supplements, oregano oil is super-packed with antioxidants. It fights infection (particularly against dangerous parasites: E. coli, Salmonella), protects against harmful organisms (just a couple drops in your water bottle could save you a lot of trouble), is a source of nutrients– zinc, vitamin C and E, magnesium, as well as iron, niacin, calcium, manganese, potassium. Oregano oil is a powerful digestive aid, PMS aid, allergy support, combats cold, eases discomfort, and supports weight loss and graceful aging. Make sure you dilute your oregano oil in coconut or olive oil if applying on your body. Arnica – Pain relieving and perfect for injuries, mix with coconut oil and rub on sprains and bruises and watch them heal overnight.
Lavender – Calming, soothing, antiseptic for bug bites, add a little to your castile soap for a lovely fragrance.
Peppermint – This oil is great for freshness– add a few drops to laundry, or mix with lavender in a hot bath. Can also be used in coconut oil, baking soda mixture for homemade toothpaste.
Argan – Hands down, the best oil for moisturizing your face and hair: very gentle, delivering supple moisture for face, especially eye area. Also doubles as makeup remover.
Raw Coconut – Use as a body lotion, hair moisturizer, cook with it, mix with baking soda to make all natural toothpaste, get creative !

Frankincense – “When in doubt, use frankincense.” This oil works wonders in so many areas of supporting your health and well-being. It is known to be an excellent antiseptic and astringent, digestive, tonic, supporting oral health, the immune system, prevents gas build-up in the body, aids skin health and makes scars fade, is a diuretic and supports the respiratory system. Frankincense also pairs wonderfully with your yoga and meditation practice.

Headlamp – Always good to have an extra source of light, when camping or just searching through your pack in a dark room. Water Bottle – Very important! Always stay hydrated, especially when traveling.
Chopsticks + Ceramic Soup Spoon – Raised following a macrobiotic way of life, I prefer not to use metal when I eat. Your own choice of utensils is always good to have in your pack.
Jar with lid – Can be used to store food, liquids, or to make your kefir water in.
Journal + Pen – The best way to remember your adventures is by writing them down. Also very useful for noting tips and information about destinations, as well as keeping in touch with new friends you meet on the road.
Camera – As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
Leatherman Knife – Multi-purpose, a very useful tool to have.

How will Facebook’s new Emoticons affect your airline's business reputation and the service you offer to customers as a crew?
As you are probably aware, Facebook is presently testing new emoticons in a few selected regions and will soon be rolled out across the globe. This sounds like just another upgrade to satisfy the ongoing dominance of the social platform to ensure that feelings of users are expressed not just by the thumbs up button (LIKE). Now you have emojis to say, "love," "haha," "yay," "wow," "sad," and "angry." These visual emojis will become the new measuring tools for airlines on the social platform to gauge customers' satisfaction on every post they will ever publish. Long gone are the days of simple engagement metric to gauge how many likes a post received.
What are the ramifications? Whether it’s a new aircraft livery, a new uniform, a delay, your picture as a crew or a video of a landing or a take off; the customers have the power to critique or credit the post with visual communication of happiness and frustration. This brings more engagement by customers to the airline without having to write comments. A simple “angry” emoji from a few thousand can certainly place the customer service department in overdrive and the airline executives in no sleep mode.
Should airline take these statistics seriously? There is no doubt that airlines digital marketing teams have put in place new metric tools to measure the effect of Facebook's new emoticons. This can be beneficial to create a better expressive tool between customers and airlines. This will become the tool of the customers without communicating by writing. Focusing on the positive benefits, emoticons can turn a simple post into *#JACfie is a perfected selfie by airline crew
35
a quick survey whether it’s about a new destination or a meal service. It is important to remember that it’s not just the airline posts that will be scrutinized. Any #JACfie* that you take and post publicly, pictures in uniform or even if you decide to pose with a passenger, can have lots of expressive feedback that can make or break your day. Keep smiling and remember the power of these little emoji’s.

VIEWS ABOUT AIRLINE CREW Here we bring you views and perspective of how
passengers and members of the public view the airline community and what JAC thinks of their views.
GUEST VIEW: «GOOD LOCATION BUT WATCH OUT FOR FLIGHT CREW OVERLOAD» This is the third time we have stayed at this hotel and believe it one of the better ones in Havana. It is within walking distance of the historic part of the town and generally, very good. There are two parts to the hotel - an older, colonial style and a newer, more contemporary style - connected by an underground walkway. Both parts have roof top swimming pools and there is now live entertainment most evenings in the colonial half lobby bar.
Virgin, Air France and KLM cabin crew all use this hotel between flights and tend to dominate both the pool and bar areas, so be prepared for this - sun loungers tend to get "hogged" by up to 15 crew and paying guests can't get a look in! Source: Reviewer on trip adviser (name withheld to avoid crew outrage on his post)
I guess this reviewer does not realize that the crew don’t stay for free and they have as much right to use the premises as anyone else.
36
FEMALE PASSENGER VIEW: YOU IGNORE FEMALE PASSENGERS AND SPEND THE ENTIRE TRIP FLIRTING WITH THE MEN “One thing that annoys me is how flight attendants target men with their big red lips and tight clothes. Us females don't even get a hello,” Sissy of Sydney, Australia said.
I’m thinking little bit of insecurity maybe?
MALE PASSENGER VIEW: “You are paid to provide a service not chat up cute guys in the galley or gossip in the attendants seating area,” Paul of Sydney said.
It’s called customer service Paul, I get a feeling that you wanted to chat up the cute guys instead.

PASSENGER WITHOUT CHILDREN VIEW: YOU LET CHILDREN RUN RIOT ON THE PLANE “My only complaint would be the issues surrounding unaccompanied children who are disruptive and rude. Pencils being thrown, kicking the seats, loud talking – no one tells them to stop,” Jeannie said.
What would passenger Jeannie recommend? Restrain the child and request the pilot to divert the flight as we have a disruptive child who’s endangering the aircraft with his pencils?
38
PASSENGER WITH A CORRECT VIEW: YOU’RE RIGID WITH THE RULES WHEN SOME LEEWAY COULD BE GIVEN. “On take-off the hostess demanded that my son’s favourite pillow be stowed away and when I protested that it was a pillow and not likely to cause serious injury even if it went flying around the cabin, she would not budge. Ended up yanking the pillow out of the young boy's hands, making him cry, and then attempted to console him with a bunch of pencils – which could pierce an eye if flying around the cabin. Some rules are meant to be bent!” Darren said.
I have to give it to Darren on this one. Don’t be that crew that lacks common sense.

PASSENGER WITH A TOUGH CALL: YOU REFUSE TO HELP PEOPLE GET THEIR LUGGAGE INTO THE OVERHEAD STORAGE COMPARTMENTS. “I was on a flight where a lot of the overhead was full, and the hosties stood by and just told people to find their own space without helping out. Poor customers! I didn't realise that the hosties weren't paid to do this,” Cathy said. Source: Readers from News.com.au
The debate continues on this subject, are crew covered if injury occurs from assisting passengers stow their luggage? Do they have to assist? There is no way of knowing how heavy the bag is. If passengers can’t lift the luggage on their own, then crew cant as well. I have never witnessed an elderly person or a child not being helped with their luggage. Maybe crew tend to ignore those who expect cabin crew to be their slaves. PS: Aren’t cabin bags suppose to be between 7 and 10kg anyway?

CREW FACTS
DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU DON’T NEED TO WASTE YOUR MONEY AND UNDERGO VIP CREW COURSES TO BE SELECTED INTO A PRIVATE FLYING JOB? The majority, if not all, aircraft owners and operators have their own SOP’s and in-house training. But you will need required years of commercial experience and business or first class service under your belt to be considered. This is not to say that some courses cannot certainly prepare you for what to expect and help you make an easier transition. Do some due diligence on the experience of the course providers; the respected ones are well known.

WHY WE FANCY A TOMATO JUICE WHEN WE FLY? As cabin pressure increases it numbs one third of our 10000 taste buds and with cabin humidity kept low, your nose no longer assist in the tasting. So the saltier and spicier the food or beverage is, we tend to go for it. Airplane tomato juice is mostly loaded in salts plus spices and we love to add more spices to it making it into a Virgin Mary cocktail, that tend to impress our active two third taste buds. Cheers but keep an eye on the salt intake.

DOING 34 FLIGHTS FROM NEW YORK, TO DUBAI, EQUALS THE DISTANCE FROM EARTH TO THE MOON. A SHORT 384 000 KM. That’s about 476 flying hours. So if you are averaging 100 flying hours per month on your roster, you would go to the moon and back every 10 month at least once. Think about the distance you would cover in 10 years.
FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT PILOTS IN AIR CANADA 1. You couldn’t buy a shrimp cocktail for the pilot before takeoff. As a food poisoning prevention measure, pilots are forbidden from eating shellfish while on duty. 2. Pilots aren’t allowed to share – food, that is. As a safety precaution, pilots order and eat different crew meals while on flight. 3. When passing another “ship” at night, pilots may flash the landing lights or wing inspection lights to say hello. 4. Aspiring commercial pilots generally invest more than $70,000 in their education and clock an average of 4,000 hours of experience before they are hired by Air Canada. 5. Once their flight simulator training is complete, pilots move directly to piloting fully-loaded passenger airplanes. They are, however, accompanied by line indoctri-
44
nation pilots for their first few flights. After a second test by a supervisor pilot, they’re fully cleared to fly on their own. 6. Pilots are sent back into the simulator at least every eight months to renew their license; every six months for those who command the Boeing 777. 7. Pilots can fly only one type of aircraft at a time. Before acquiring a license to command a different model, they must go through 8 to 12 weeks of training. The process includes “ground school”, pre-simulator mockup flights and simulator training. Some of the above facts may or may not apply to other airlines. Source: Gofar.aircanada.com
FLIGHT ATTENDANT CLAIMING WORK-RELATED TAX EXPENSES. Flight crew & flight attendant in Australia can claim work related expenses as long as the claims can meet the following conditions. The expense is incurred on the job and is not personal. Overnight travel expenses may include: • meals, accommodation and incidental expenses • car, air, bus, train, tram, ferry and taxi fares • bridge and road tolls • car parking • car hire fees • visa application fees. Crew may be able to claim a deduction for the costs they incur when they buy, rent, repair or clean work clothing. Items may include shoes, hosiery, stockings, socks and jumpers where they are an essential part of a distinctive compulsory uniform and the colour. They can claim a deduction for the cost of making up cash or bar shortages. GROOMING TIPS Airline crew are expected to look fabulous irrespective of the time of day, the length of flight, how old they are or what size of uniform they wear. Once you don your respective airlines uniform you are now a walking talking ambassador for your company and only the best and highest standards will suffice. 46
|
NOVEMBER 2015
Now for those of us that have flown, some of us for many years, we can understand that on some occasions “fabulous” can be difficult to achieve. We all have our “off days“, but unfortunately for a passenger paying hard earned cash, they don’t want to see us on our not so good days, so paint on that smile and leave it
fixed in place, until you reach your hotel room, or home, throw off the hat, and jump into bed for a well earned rest… until your early morning wake up call that is. Here are my top ten tips for looking good in uniform and staying that way until you are back on solid ground.
SLEEP Difficult I know, when your body thinks it is 2am and the clock in the room is saying something different. One thing that does keep crew awake is the worry of sleeping through your alarm. Planning your sleep before a flight is a responsibility that lies entirely with you. You can’t store sleep or even bank sleep for another day so trying to get at least 6 hours before a flight is imperative. Black out blinds or curtains, a glass of water next to the bed, ear plugs, eye shades, a decent pillow if you are at home e.g. the tempur cloud, all contribute to a good sleep. One thing that does keep crew awake is the worry of sleeping through your alarm. Combat this by having a good old fashioned alarm clock and an alarm on your phone, and if in a hotel double check you have the wake-up call confirmed {maybe ask for it 10 mins before it is scheduled}.

HYDRATE Drinking water on a daily basis is a must for everyone but for crew, it is essential. Remember that salty snacks can cause swelling too so avoid crisps, salted nuts and chose as many fresh fruit and vegetables that you can manage. Avoid too much caffeine as it is a natural diuretic meaning that if taken in vast amounts it may cause problems such as anxiety, sleeplessness, headaches, irritability. Caffeine also relaxes the detrusor muscles thereby causing the bladder to feel fuller more frequently. Not good on a flight during the meal service! Contrary to popular belief however moderate coffee consumption contributes to our flux requirements and does not lead to dehydration or significant loss of body fluid.
48
LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN Find a skincare range that suits you as flying can really take its toll on your skin. What you need before and after flights will be different to what your skin requires on the ground. If I say it 3 times you will remember: Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise. Here is a 3 step skin care routine: Cleanse: your skin with a cleanser that is for your skin type, Tone: {This is the one thing that we tend to not do daily, if you only do it before and after a flight then that is better than not doing it at all} a toner will cleanse the skin further than a cleanser and also
shrink the appearance of pores. A good natural toner is rose water, and smells lovely too. Always be careful to avoid the eye area with a toner as it may sting. Once the skin is dry apply a moisturiser. Moisturise: Invest in a good moisturiser, one that your skin absorbs well and for the ladies that you can easily apply makeup on top of. ALWAYS have an SPF minimum 25, and if it isn’t in the moisturiser then add separately or you can see if your foundation {base} has it. It is never too early to have a day and a night cream, and you may find that after a flight you want to use the night cream
49
as they are generally thicker and deeper moisturising. Eye creams are also a crucial part of moisturising as they minimise fine lines, keep the eye area hydrated and also can help with puffiness and dark circles. ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP BEFORE SLEEPING!! There I’ve said it in big writing so it stands out, you can use all of the above steps or if you are really tired then use a face wipe but not always as they are not as good as a 3 step skincare routine.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED When you are tired its so easy to forget so before resting prepare everything for your flight, • Get your uniform out and check for creases, including your service apron or waistcoat, • Your underwear, ( make sure it is not visible under your uniform and you don’t have a visible panty line. • Tights {stockings} and a spare pair {accessible on the flight if you need them} socks are matched • Suitcase packed and return uniform • Cabin bag and flight bag/handbag with all documentation, passport, ID etc. • Make-up, hair products, nail polish for chips {and also to stop a run in your stockings!} all packed and accessible during the flight.
50
• Shoes polished, court and cabin shoes for the ladies. Spare polish is packed • Clothes brush to remove hair or fluff from jacket. • Pin wings or name badges on in advance. • Check bags to make sure they are clean and don’t have unwanted stickers or non-uniform stickers on. • Think about the destination you are going to, do you need your winter coat, gloves etc. • Alarm clock and toiletries, Pp.’s or something decent to wear should the hotel fire alarm go off {I have learnt by my mistakes!} Gayle X

5 MINUTES WITH DR. JAFFER KHAN: TOP TIPS ON CHOOSING A COSMETIC SURGEON. As most crew operate in very stressful
1. Surgeon qualifications Consider what qualifications your surgeon has before opting for surgery. It is important for the surgeon to be board certified in Plastic Surgery from a country of your choice where you would expect qualifications are of an acceptable standard.
environmental conditions and unorthodox lifestyle, some opt to take necessary action to improve and reverse the effect by selecting cosmetic surgery as the answer. Best place to get advise is from leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Khan who gave us the best tips on how to choose a cosmetic surgeon. 52
2. Length of time and reputation within the community How many years has your surgeon of choice been in practice? Do he or she have a reputation for excellence within the community? Ideally, your surgeon should reside in the country of your choice. Visiting surgeons tend to lack follow-up care unless there is a support team on the ground. “The concept of visiting surgeons always amazes me; unless there is a sub specialty offering such as revisions for Rhinoplasty, lid surgery or novel techniques. I believe if one is busy enough in one’s home country the only reason for travelling to another would be for holidays” remarks Dr. Khan.
3. Referral type The best way of selecting your surgeon is generally through word of mouth, and/ or through having spoken to someone who has had experience with the doctor. The Internet and media are sometimes simply a function of how much one is spending on social media, marketing and Google ad words.
5. Price Undoubtedly, price is important when considering the purchase of any service. However, there are a few points to avoid. Firstly, try not to get involved in a surgery that is unaffordable and therefore puts strain on your financial resources. Secondly, avoid looking for bargains as aesthetic surgery involves potentially, your appearance and subsequent well-being.
