WRITING WITH LIGHT SPARKS IMAGINATION by Laurie Dean Torrell At 14, Mariatu Baker is wise beyond her years. Her poem “I Shall”—written and combined with a photograph she took of a flower—was inspired by the experience of being born in the middle of a war in Sierra Leone, a place she left when she was six in order to come to Buffalo, NY. “I write to share thoughts and feelings . . . and so I won’t forget,” she says. A student at Frederick Law Olmsted School #156, a middle and high school in the Buffalo Public School district, Mariatu was one of the first students to participate in Writing with Light, the joint education program of CEPA Gallery and Just Buffalo Literary Center, supported from its inception by M&T Bank. Designed to ignite student imagination through writing and photography, Writing with Light focuses on the academic, social, and creative needs of underserved youth with comprehensive sequential arts programming. It has a real and demonstrable impact on over 2,500 students each year with hands-on in-school, after-school, and communitybased initiatives. Mariatu’s work, like that of so many students who participate in Writing with Light, is original, powerful and compelling. Through direct contact with accomplished writers and photographers, students learn to capture and express things most important to them in words and images, created around a unifying theme. She was thrilled when her poem and photograph were included in the Writing with Light exhibition that is mounted at the conclusion of each year’s programs to showcase and celebrate the students’ work. “I felt really good that mine got picked to be up there!” she says. Mariatu’s mother, Trish, says Writing with Light sparked her daughter’s imagination, and she takes obvious pride in her continued creative writing and the poetry that now fills an entire notebook. “Mariatu has huge strength in being able to dream for things, and when she dreams it, she makes it happen.” Looking to the future, Mariatu says she has always wanted to help other people around the world, hopes to become a professional soccer player, and wants to continue writing. “Because of my experience, I understand more. I really pay attention. People should think about not just themselves but others too. Life here is really good.” Story originally featured in M&T Bank’s 2010 Community Involvement Report.
