Hotel ratings
explained
So often hotels receive different ratings from different authorities. To avoid any surprises and give you added peace of mind, we have created JG hotel ratings based upon our knowledge of hotels and customer feedback so you know what to expect and are sure you're choosing the right hotel for you.
JG2 Hotels with a JG2 rang are a mixture of larger hotels and privately owned properes. Décor and furnishings may be simple but are clean and well maintained. All bedrooms have en-suite facilies, TV and may have tea/coffee-making facilies. Food may be buffet style in some of the larger hotels. Services may be limited but efficient.
JG2+ JG2+ rated hotels offer a slightly higher standard of hospitality, oen with good home cooking plus enhanced décor, facilies and services, which is recognised and welcomed by our customers. Food may be buffet style in some of the larger hotels. They may also enjoy an enviable locaon and/or higher levels of sasfacon on online hotel rang sites and our own customer feedback surveys.
JG3 Hotels with a JG3 rang tend to be a more formal style of hotel, oen part of a hotel chain, or are very-welcoming family-owned properes. Generally, they offer a greater range of facilies and services, and bedrooms tend to be a lile more spacious with addional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seang, bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or waiter service.
JG3+ JG3+ hotels typically enjoy higher levels of sasfacon on both online hotel rang sites and our own customer sasfacon surveys and may enjoy superior locaons close to resort aracons or surrounded by spectacular scenery.
JG4 Accommodaon in our JG4 category is of an even higher standard, typically offering a wide range of facilies and services. Bedrooms are designed to make your stay the most comfortable possible and the staff provide a service that reflects the detail and quality. You can also expect higher standards of food and beverages.
Accessibility If you or your travelling companions have any mobility concerns, please inform us at the me of booking. It is a minimum requirement that you are able to climb the steps onto a coach unaided. Please read the tour inerary carefully to make sure it is appropriate for your mobility level. We also hold accessibility informaon for each hotel featured on our holidays, and are able to advise if lis and/or ground floor rooms are available. Please refer to page 67 for more informaon about travelling with us or go online at nationalholidays.com/accessibility. If you have any queries on hotel facilies in relaon to mobility, please contact us immediately for detailed informaon.

Goathland (Heartbeat) & Whitby
Step into Heartbeat country on this delightful seven day holiday! Many of its iconic scenes were filmed locally in Yorkshire, including the picturesque and recognisable village of Goathland, the fictional Aidensfield in the beloved series. We discover plenty more highlights of the region too, including storied Whitby, quaint Hornsea, atmospheric York and more, all from our base in the ever-popular seaside resort of Scarborough, with its award-winning beaches and traditional attractions galore.
Date Sun 27 Oct
Our first visit takes us to the pretty village of Goathland, hidden away in the stunning North York Moors National Park. The village has attracted visitors since the 19th century, but Goathland’s popularity has soared since its appearance as Aidensfield in the hit TV series Heartbeat and its role in the Harry Potter films. Next up is the charming coastal town of Whitby, famed for its connection to Bram Stoker’s Dracula and for its striking jet jewellery. Wander around the busy harbour before tackling the climb up to the atmospheric ruined abbey perched on the cliffs. Whitby was also once the home of the famous explorer Captain Cook, who lived here as an apprentice.
Beverley & Hornsea
We head to the lovely market town of Beverley, one of Yorkshire’s best-kept secrets, boasting quaint courtyards, cobbled streets and historic buildings. The lovely 13th-century Minster is well worth a visit, renowned for its medieval stone carvings and pretty stained glass, and there is also a range of lovely boutiques, cafés and pubs. For the perfect mix of town and coast, we then make our way to the charming seaside town of Hornsea. Browse the shops for some famous Hornsea pottery, enjoy a stroll on the Blue Flag beach or admire the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire here, home to a whole host of bird species.

We then head to Cowes, a vibrant and sophisticated resort home to the world-famous regatta that swells the local population each August. Enjoy a stroll along the seafront, browse the boutique shops, or admire many of the town’s ornate buildings which date from Queen Victoria’s time, in the style popularised by Prince Albert.

You are cordially invited to Leicestershire’s Belvoir Castle for an exclusive springtime visit! We are welcomed by the ‘Accidental Duchess’ of Rutland herself before exploring this magnificent gem, used as a filming location for series 1-3 of The Crown.
Date Sun 19 May
Today we head to Belvoir Castle for our exclusive visit. We begin with a welcome from The Duchess of Rutland, Emma Manners, (who disguised herself as a cleaner so she could watch filming of The Crown!), before exploring the estate for ourselves. This has been the ancestral home of the Duke of Rutland since the first Lord of Belvoir came to England with William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Since then, the family have lived in an unbroken line here, standing the test of vast remodellings, familial squabbles, wars and even a damaging fire in 1816 which destroyed priceless works of art by the likes of Rubens and Van Dyck. Castle guides are on hand to provide an insight into Belvoir’s extensive history and point out rooms and locations which appeared in The Crown, as well as other blockbuster films and series. There’s also time to discover the stunning grounds, which features the rose-studded formal gardens, Japanese Woodland, the Regency-style Duchess Garden plus the remarkable Capability Brown gardens, brought to fruition after his late 18th-century plans were discovered in the castle archives in January 2013. Our day is capped off with either a copy of The Accidental Duchess: From Farmer’s Daughter to Belvoir Castle or a bottle of wine, produced by Belvoir’s very own vineyard. In the afternoon we rejoin the coach for the journey home.

Scenic tour of the Black Forest (Rottweil & Triberg)
The Black Forest is renowned for its dark green coniferous trees, half-timbered houses and rushing waterfalls. This breathtaking region must be seen to be believed, the landscape so astounding and inspiring, it’s no wonder the Black Forest is one of the most picturesque regions to visit in Germany! Our tour takes us into the very heart of the Black Forest to fairytale-like villages nestled amongst the mountainside and elegant German towns, such as Baden-Baden and Freiburg.

Next, we head to Triberg in the heart of the Black Forest. You’ll notice walking around the centre of Triberg, a large amount of Black Forest gâteau in the windows and cuckoo clocks. Triberg is the birthplace of the original Black Forest Cherry cake recipe! And if that’s not impressive enough, Triberg is also famous for having the world’s largest cuckoo clock (which is the size of a two-storey building) and for having the largest waterfall in Germany – falling an impressive 163 metres in a series of cascades.

The Austrian Tyrol All Inclusive ALL INCLUSIVE
We tour the hauntingly beautiful Black Forest, home to centuries of German history. Our scenic adventure begins with the oldest town in Baden-Württemberg, Rottweil. The name might sound like the dog breed, Rottweiler, because Rottweiler is descended from drover dogs left by the Roman Legion in Rottweil! The town has an attractive Old Town of towers, churches and fountains and is famous for its medieval centre which has changed very little in appearance since the 16th century.

Excursions
Trogir
After breakfast, we spend the morning exploring nearby Trogir, a picturesque town that sits on a small island and is known for its charming mix of Renaissance and baroque buildings. The town centre’s striking Venetian architecture has seen it be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making Trogir a must-see destination that can be easily explored on foot.
Split & Hvar Island
We start the day with a guided walking tour of Split, the second largest city in Croatia. The Old Town is full of historic charm and boasts medieval streets, cobblestone corners, stunning promenades, and baroque monuments. During our tour, we explore some of the most iconic sights in the city, including the UNESCO-protected palace of the great emperor Diocletian, the mausoleum (now an impressive cathedral), the medieval Venetian castle, and more.
Hvar Island Tour
We take a guided tour of Hvar – known as one of the top 10 most beautiful islands in the world! Our tour begins in the stunning harbour town of Jelsa with its stunning harbour, before moving on to see the Stari Grad Plain - an 80-hectare agricultural colony, the picturesque village of Vrboska, also known as the ‘Little Venice of Croatia’, the tranquil village of Brusje and the medieval towns of Stari Grad and Hvar. We finish our tour with a visit to Tvrdalj Castle, formerly the summer residence of Croatian poet Petar Hektorovic.
Zastrazisce
Our excursion today takes us to Zastrazisce, a rural village in the Eastern part of the island. We explore the Illyrian fort atop Vela Glava, which played a crucial defensive role in the island’s history, as well as the two towers built by the Andelinovic family as protection against Turkish pirates.
Omis
We travel to Omiš, a small town at the mouth of the emerald-green Cetina River. Here there be pirates! Or there used to be, at least. The town was once home to the Pirates of Omiš in the 13th and 14th centuries, who used Sagittae, very fast boats, to raid traders along the Adriatic coast. They would then retreat into the Cetina River where larger ships could not follow them. Nowadays, Omiš is a popular tourist destination and the Old Town is dotted with historical landmarks such as the fortress Mirabella, a 13th-century edifice. Another place worth exploring is the Ffortress Starigrad, located at the mountain peak behind the Old Town.

The major landmark of the city is the Guggenheim Museum. The town boasts a partially walled old quarter, a labyrinth of medieval streets and beautiful Romanesque cathedral. There’s also the option to join a leisurely three-mile walk along the Camino de Santiago.
Burgos
We enjoy a guided tour of Burgos. The city is on the main pilgrimage route and is steeped in history. After free time for lunch, we continue to the charming village of Castrillo, where the houses and cobbled streets are built with the same russet-coloured stone. From here our coach climbs up to the Cruz de Fierro, the highest point on the Camino de Santiago and a symbolic place where pilgrims traditionally leave a rock. Days 3 & 4 – Vienna, Austria
The capital of Austria is a real highlight of our Danube cruise. With its striking Baroque palaces, wealth of museums and galleries, plus the state opera and many theatres, the city enjoys a lively cultural scene all year round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so! Why not explore the city on an optional excursion by coach?
Day 5 – Esztergom & Budapest, Hungary
Once the capital of Hungary, Esztergom sits right on the bank of the Danube and can be admired directly from the river. The castle tower and mighty basilica form an amazing sight, rising up from the steep bank of the Danube. Do you know how many bridges Hungary’s capital of Budapest has? There are seven in total, spanning the river between the neighbourhoods Buda and Pest. The most well-known is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Take a look at Budapest’s imposing structures as we cruise down the Danube. From the sun deck of the ship, there’s an unobstructed view of Budapest’s famous parliament building – the perfect way to experience this stunning city. Overnighting in Budapest is always a treat. Once the sun sets, just imagine the city all lit up on both sides of the river. It’s a magical sight to behold!
Day 6 – Budapest, Hungary
Spend the day at leisure in Budapest. Explore the city on a fascinating guided tour, ‘take the waters’ at one of the many popular bathhouses or discover the stunning Castle Hill. With its striking architecture and many turrets, it looks like something straight out of a fairytale.
Day 7 – Bratislava, Slovakia & Engelhartszell, Austria
Located on the left bank of the Danube, Bratislava is the youngest capital city in Europe. Throughout the old town, traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire can be seen. This leisurely city of baroque and rococo, palaces and palisades, art and coffee houses is a perfect place to wander around, marvel at impressive sights, relax and unwind. We enjoy an included walking tour of Bratislava to discover its highlights.Later, our journey continues to Engelhartszell in the upper Danube valley, a quaint Austrian gem with a lovely riverside abbey.
