GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR FREE TIME IN LONDON
There’s no shortage of things to do in London and better still, you can enjoy a lot of these things for FREE! We’ve done our best to come up with some key highlights to point you in the right direction...
Museums and Art Galleries
London is home to a diverse range of fascinating museums, including the Science, the Natural History, the British Maritime and the Imperial War Museum. London also has an exciting array of art galleries from the Tate Modern to the National Gallery to name a couple.
Shop ‘till You Drop
Oxford Street is one of the most famous shopping areas in London, with nearly every high-street brand you can think of and then some. However, don’t forget to pop into iconic department stores like Harrods, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason for some traditional favourites and luxuries too. These famous stores are worth a visit for their window displays alone!
Markets
There’s an abundance of vibrant markets in London, including Camden, Brixton, Brick Lane and Portobello. This is your opportunity to grab a bargain or something a little unique, with everything from art and antiques to clothes and handmade gifts on offer. London’s markets are also a great chance to enjoy something delicious to eat!
The British Library
Leafy Parks
Get some fresh air and go deer spotting in Richmond Park, follow the stunning Serpentine in Hyde Park or see the 2:30pm pelican feeding in St James’ Park, the oldest royal park. There are plenty of other options too if you would like a little stroll among the historic green spaces.
Famous Landmarks
You can’t visit London and not take a few selfies with some of the world’s most iconic landmarks! From Big Ben to Tower Bridge to, cross as many as you can off your list, or why not take a Thames river cruise to soak up the sights in a more relaxing way? See page 9 for more information!
"Well organised and enjoyable trip. First time of using the company and would do so again. Excellent driver and knowledgeable about London."
- Janice D, TrustPilotVisit the British Library and learn something new! A copy of every publication produced in the UK and Ireland is sent to the British Library, resulting in a collection of more than 150 million items. From books, manuscripts and newspapers to prints and drawings, there is plenty to discover.
Covent Garden Street Performers
The West Piazza of Covent Garden Market has street performers to entertain you every afternoon. Many of the acts love to get audience members to help them with their shows. All performers are licensed and have even passed an audition to entertain here!
Open-Air Events
In the summer months, you can head to The Scoop, a fantastic outdoor amphitheatre located near City Hall. As part of the London Bridge City Summer Festival, you can enjoy a host of free events, including sports screenings, theatre, music and more!
Enjoy a Rest Stop
There are plenty of al fresco terraces or rooftop bars to discover, offering a wonderful chance to sit down and relax after all that sightseeing. We like the sound of a refreshing glass of Pimms or a fruit cooler in the sunshine, admiring the views and watching the world go by. Don’t forget about the delicious foodie scene too – scheduling in a refuel stop is a must!
Did you know?
Heading to Buckingham Palace to see the famous Changing of the Guard is a wonderful way to spend your free time in London, but did you know that you could see various mascots during the ceremony if you’re lucky enough? Our favourites are the adorable Corporal Cruachan IV (the Royal Regiment of Scotland’s Shetland Pony), Baptiste Billy Goat (the Royal 22nd Regiment’s mascot) and the Irish Guard’s Wolfhound, Seamus.
What do we recommend?
Just Go! Holidays team member and theatre enthusiast, Amy, tells us all about her favourite West End shows, and what she is planning to see next!
In third place is Matilda The Musical. It brought to life some of the iconic moments from Dahl’s brilliant novel, from Amanda flying across the stage by her pigtails to Bruce taking on the famous chocolate cake. It’s a musical to be enjoyed by anyone, and I’d highly recommend going to see it.
The very first show I saw on the West End was Les Misérables, and it still remains one of my favourites. Nothing prepares you for the power and passion that you feel from the songs, and the storyline. It’s no wonder why it’s one of the most well-known, and longest standing London musicals you can see today.
The Lion King is mesmerising and earns the top spot as my all-time favourite West End show. The craftmanship and hours that have gone into the costumes are second to none. I love this show so much that I've seen it twice!
There are lots of shows I’m yet to see. I've got my eye on the brand-new Sister Act and Fawlty Towers shows for my next visit to London. All of these shows you can book to see for yourself with Just Go! Holidays!
