Welcome to our 2025 UK and European brochure, showcasing a host of holiday ideas alongside some perennial favourites.
I am very proud of this selection of tours and consider it to be one of our best-ever ranges. We have options covering the length and breadth of the British Isles, from the tip of the Cornish coast to the wilds of the Northern Scottish Isles, as well as holidays across Europe, including a new collection of expert-guided battlefield tours.
I am really excited by our new Scottish tours, where you can enjoy a getaway to the Scottish islands of Skye and Lewis or the Orkney Isles combined with the great North Coast 500, or perhaps take in the Highlands with some of the UK’s best steam railways.
Our European collection features a brand-new Jewels range, offering all-inclusive escorted tours with fantastic excursion programmes that help you to really explore your chosen destination. Look out for these tours taking you to Croatia, Crete, the islands of the Aegean and my personal favourite, Portugal.
With a host of other holidays on offer, including a chance to see the iconic Torvill and Dean’s last dance, there is something for everyone in this brochure. Whichever break you choose, you can be sure that all our holidays are created to give you the very best experience.
I do hope that you enjoy looking through this brochure and we hope to see you soon.

Join us on a journey of discovery through Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, an enchanting region characterised by fairytale forests, trickling streams, towering mountains and a lovely slower pace of life. Amidst this beauty, we soak up the county’s cultural heritage with visits to one of the country’s most famous monastic sites (dating back to 544!), the oldest whiskey distillery in Ireland and a grand estate which documents powerful stories of the Great Famine. Sit back and relax as we meander along the pretty waterways, admiring the beautiful scenery and ancient sites along its banks. Next stop is Knock, a small village nestled in County Mayo and a popular Christian pilgrimage site thanks to the Knock Shrine, where 15 people witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist in 1879 (their testimonies are a fascinating read). Discover the islands nestled just off Britain’s coast, each with its own unique charm and characteristics. Whether you’re interested in exploring history and culture, enjoying the outdoors or simply relaxing in a tranquil setting, the UK islands provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of mainland life. This year, don't miss Jersey's celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of liberation from German occupation.
A storied history and incredible sights await us on the beautiful Isle of Man, where we enjoy a break packed full of scenic train journeys, sweeping natural landscapes and a friendly atmosphere. On this five-day getaway, we experience some of the island’s best features with excursions to the pretty seaside towns of Ramsey and Peel, as well as the magnificent Laxey Wheel, a grand feat of Victorian engineering which is still in operation today. We also travel on the vintage Manx Electric Railway and the mountain-climbing Snaefell Mountain Railway, which takes us to the summit of the island’s highest peak to enjoy the spectacular views.
Manx Electric Railway, Laxey Wheel & Snaefell Mountain Railway
We take a trip on the historic Manx Electric Railway. We disembark in Laxey to visit the Laxey Wheel, the largest working waterwheel in the world and known colloquially as the Lady Isabella. From here, we join the Snaefell Mountain Railway, the only electric mountain railway in the British Isles. Dating from 1895, electric-powered trains take passengers over 2,000ft up to the summit of Snaefell, the Isle of Man’s highest point.
7 Days from £729 7
Mystical, captivating and beautiful, the Isle of Man is a unique destination peppered with enchanting stone churches, castles and forts, tangled trees and twisty trails, adding to the magical atmosphere of this sea-bound land. The Isle of Man also boasts several impressive heritage railways, offering nostalgic journeys for us to take in this dramatic Manx scenery, plus a traditional horse-drawn tramway along the seafront in Douglas. Step back in time as we experience the best of the Isle of Man’s sights and attractions during this relaxing week, uncovering the secrets of this extraordinary island and exploring its rich heritage.
Castletown, Port Erin, Cregneash & Isle of Man Steam Railway
After some free time in Castletown, we journey to Port Erin. Next is a brief photo stop at The Sound at the island’s southern tip. The enchanting island of Jersey offers a taste of the Continent but closer to home. Historically attractive to invading armies because of its strategic position between England and France, Jersey has been fought over many times throughout history. Today, it is the island’s abundance of natural beauty and mild, sunny climate which makes it so appealing, from the rugged cliffs of the north down to the long, sandy beaches of the south. During our relaxing break we enjoy a wonderful tour of the island’s highlights and have plenty of time to enjoy the island at leisure. With all of this and more packed into a mere 46 square miles, there is plenty to explore on the beautiful island of Jersey.
Island Highlights Tour
Our tour takes in Jersey’s spectacular coastline. Highlights include St Aubin Bay and St Brelade’s Bay, one of the island’s most popular resort beaches, the rugged north coast overlooking the neighbouring Channel Islands and the famous Corbière lighthouse on the south-western corner of the island. We also visit St Ouen’s Bay with its miles of golden sand and rolling Atlantic waves – a prime spot for surfing, and picturesque Gorey harbour overlooked by Mont Orgueil Castle. Throughout the day we will have plenty of photo stops and opportunities to walk along the way and have refreshments.

Celebrate the Liberation of Jersey and remember the day when Jubilant crowds greeted the British forces and the Union Jack was hoisted at Pomme d’Or for the first time in five years. Join in the island’s celebrations as we also explore the traces of the German occupation scattered across the island with a specialist guide and discover fascinating insights into the lives of Jersey’s residents during 1940-45.
Jersey World War II Tour
We head to Noirmont Point, the most southerly headland in Jersey. Overlooking Portelet Bay with stunning views, the area was the ideal location to mount powerful guns. The M-132 Underground Command Bunker was also built in the same area, which extends to a depth of 40ft. We also visit the fascinating war tunnels, one of Jersey’s historical highlights that offers an insight into life under the control of occupying Germany during the Second World War. In this immense underground complex, we discover how the Nazis turned this small island into a fortress through the faithfully recreated rooms and detailed exhibitions on display, complete with artefacts from the time, and learn what life was like for the population during one of the most tumultuous periods in Jersey’s modern history.

Lying off the coast of Normandy and with a unique blend of French and British influences, the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey combine stunning coastal scenery and untouched rural idylls with a rich heritage. On this relaxing break, we spend three nights in Guernsey before flying across to neighbouring Jersey for another three nights. With plenty to discover, this enchanting escape to some of the UK’s most idyllic islands won’t disappoint.
Guernsey Island Highlights Tour
We enjoy a half-day tour of Guernsey where we take in the island’s pretty sights such as the famous Little Chapel, one of the smallest chapels in the world, which features in the novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. Our tour also takes in Guernsey’s beautiful Grandes Rocques and Pembroke Bay beaches, as well as the striking Pleinmont Point, a Second World War observation station that sits high atop a headland overlooking the coast.

Every summer, the enchanting Channel Island of Jersey stages a fabulous floral extravaganza, the Battle of Flowers. One of the highlights on Jersey’s calendar, the spectacle of flower-festooned floats, musicians, dancers and street entertainers creates a tremendous carnival atmosphere which involves the whole island and attracts thousands of visitors each year. On this lovely break, we also enjoy a unique behind-the-scenes preview of the parade as well as a tour of Jersey’s glorious coast and time to explore the island at leisure.
Battle of Flowers Parade
First staged in 1902 in celebration of the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, Jersey’s Battle of Flowers is one of the largest floral carnivals in Europe and the island’s oldest event.
We take our places in the Grandstand to watch the afternoon spectacle as flower-festooned floats parade around the arena accompanied by musicians, dancers and bands, all creating a wonderful carnival atmosphere and a veritable feast for the eyes.

Uncover a rich tapestry of impressions that Holland has to offer, from the artistic flare of The Hague, with a history told through architecture, to the old-age Dutch traditions of Delft Blue pottery and specialist Gouda cheese making. From our base in the thriving metropolis of Rotterdam, we also explore the diverse city of Amsterdam, with its famous canal district and the highest concentration of museums in the world, and there’s also plenty of time to watch the world go by on our canal cruise.
Royal Delft Museum & Gouda Cheese
The beautiful, intricate design of Delft Blue, a traditional Dutch style of pottery, originates from the Royal Deft Factory Museum and has been hand-made here since the 15th century. On our visit, we walk through the old factory, discover the extensive collections of historical and modern porcelain pieces and learn more about the master painters and intriguing tales behind these designs. We then visit Gouda, famous for its delicious Gouda cheese, made using traditional methods dating back to the Middle Ages, in polders around the city. We partake in a unique interactive experience through the cheese-making process, as we explore the ‘Milky Way’ and try our hand at turning cheese, followed by some cheese tasting.

The year is 1944 and, in the skies, high above the Netherlands, British paratroopers of the First Allied Airborne Army get ready to drop. The mission? To seize key bridges and hold them until the ground forces could reach them. The result was the largest airborne drop in history – made famous by Cornelius Ryan’s book and Richard Attenborough’s classic film, A Bridge Too Far
We trace the footsteps of the fallen soldiers and journey into the heart of Operation Market Garden, visiting drop zones and key locations of deployment. Joined by a knowledgeable Battlefield Guide, we visit key towns such as Arnhem and Oosterbeek, as well as landing zone memorials, museums and much more.
The March of 80 Corps (full day)
We travel the route of the 80 Corps Division and push from Eindhoven to Arnhem. Along the route, we stop at two villages that held strategic importance to Operation Market Garden. The village of Wolfheze stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifices made during this pivotal moment in history. The Landing Zone Memorial commemorates the Glider Pilot Regiment and is located in the site that was used as a landing zone.
We also visit the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, which contains the graves of most of those killed in the landings and those killed later in the fighting around Arnhem. There are 1,1684 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried here, 243 of which are unidentified.

Every six years since 1613, the charming Austrian village of Erl has played host to a spectacular Passion Play, where the story of Jesus Christ is brought to life. A significant feature of Tyrolean culture and now on the UNESCO World Heritage List, almost half of the residents take part in this world-famous event, and with over 600 participants, it really is a sight to behold. This exciting break is the perfect chance to follow in the footsteps of Bavarian pilgrims who watched the first play 600 years ago, originally created to give thanks for God’s protection against plague and war. We combine this iconic performance with the highlights of the stunning Tyrol, from an enchanting steam train journey and a scenic lake cruise to idyllic alpine towns and magical cities.
Alpbach & Rattenberg
For our first excursion we head to charming Alpbach, nestled in the stunning landscapes of the Kitzbühel Alps and renowned for its traditional wooden architecture and vibrant flowers. Often referred to as Austria’s most beautiful village, it’s a lovely place to enjoy a stroll, soak up the Alpine atmosphere and go in search of Kaiserschmarren (fluffy pancake with cranberries) and Löffelmilch (a sweetened alcoholic milk drink).
We then continue on to Rattenberg, the smallest town in Austria and tucked between the ancient fortress on the hillside and the River Inn. Built in the shadow of Rat Mountain, the town has a long history of glass-blowing plus a picturesque well-preserved medieval centre, rows of brightly-painted townhouses and a lovely pedestrianised high street. There is plenty more to explore, including the Augustine Museum, one of the Austrian Tyrol’s leading museums with its unique collection of artefacts, and the castle ruins which offer breathtaking views of the valley below.
Innsbruck & Hungerburg Funicular
The beautiful city of Innsbruck awaits, with its rich history and magnificent backdrop of snow-capped peaks. There is plenty to see around this Austrian gem, including the atmospheric Old Town and the Golden Roof, built for Emperor Maximilian I as a royal box from which to view tournaments in the square below. The central precinct of the Altstadt, an area of medieval houses attractively painted in traditional pastel colours,
is bound by the River Inn and the Graben, following the course of the town’s moat that once surrounded its medieval core. It really is a fairytale-like city full of charm, all beneath the stunning alpine mountain ridge of Nordkette. We discover more on our guided tour of the city, before we enjoy a journey on the Hungerburg Funicular from Innsbruck to Seegrube, which boasts breathtaking alpine views along the way and at the summit.
Lake Achensee & Zillertal Railway
We take in some of Austria’s most spectacular landscapes from different perspectives, beginning with the ‘Fjord of the Alps.’ After some free time at Lake Achensee, where the picture-perfect turquoise waters are set against the imposing backdrop of the Karwendel Mountains, we relax on a scenic boat trip.
Next, we head to the Zillertal Railway, which attracts railway enthusiasts from across the world due to its small track gauge and steam engine. Our memorable journey along the valley of the river Ziller takes in the amazingly beautiful Zillertal Valley, as we meander between the towns of Mayrhofen and Jenbach, surrounded by stunning rugged mountains.
Salzburg & Salzkammergut
We head out and take a guided tour of enchanting Salzburg, lying at the northern boundary of the Alps and famed as the birthplace of Mozart and filming location for parts of the iconic film The Sound of Music. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, its wonderful architecture and breathtaking setting make it one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. We discover some of the main sights such as the beautifully-preserved Old Town overlooked by the medieval Hohensalzburg Castle, which offers panoramic views.
Later we enjoy a scenic coach tour of the magnificent natural scenery of Austria’s Lake District, known as Salzkammergut. This beautiful Alpine region boasts serene lakes, spectacular mountains and enchanting forests peppered with quaint villages, with vistas at every turn resembling a classic Austrian postcard.

Hall in Tirol & Swarovski Crystal Worlds
We make our way to Hall in Tirol, once a significant economic centre thanks to its rich salt mines and home to an incredible Old Town. With its maze of narrow cobbled streets, historic churches, multi-coloured buildings, old mint tower, medieval castle, charming market squares and centuries-old town hall, a visit here is like stepping into a perfect little toy town! Next we head to Swarovski Crystal Worlds, created by Austrian artist André Heller and opened in 1995 to mark the company’s hundredth anniversary. From the magical Chambers of Wonder to the unique gardens, there is plenty to discover, and don’t forget to pick up a souvenir in the shop.
We have some free time at the hotel before an early dinner and the highlight of our break, the performance of the Erl Passion Play. A 600-year-old tradition, the life and death of Jesus Christ is staged by an impressive cast of over 600 performers in Erl, located in the northern part of the Tyrol, close to the German border. There is record of Bavarian pilgrims watching the play in 1613, created as a way to give thanks for God’s protection against plague and war, and it has been dutifully performed every six years since. Today, the story is performed in a purpose-built play house, renowned for its fascinating architecture and acoustics, and is accompanied by a live choir and orchestra. It promises to be a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Ciao bella! This eight-day escape is a true love letter to Italy. From Venice, a Casanova of a city with unrivalled good looks, and star-crossed Verona to Rome’s head-in-the-clouds architecture and Florence’s breathtaking bridges, it’s hard not to fall in love with the romance of this country.
Verona (full day)
We leave Montecatini and head to Shakespeare-famous Verona. This is a wonderful place to explore, complete with a beautifully preserved amphitheatre, pockets of pretty streets and, of course, Juliet’s House, where you can gaze up at her balcony and post your love letter in the little red mailbox.

There’s something special about Scandinavia in the warmer months; the picturesque cities come to life, the evenings seem impossibly light and the atmosphere is wonderfully joyous. We experience it for ourselves on this lovely break, admiring the beauty of the three Scandinavian capitals and discovering their highlights on fascinating guided tours. Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm are all known for their fresh clean air, a plethora of parks, green spaces and stunning architecture, including grand palaces, all in pretty waterfront settings.
Oslo (full day)
We enjoy a guided city tour of Oslo. Norway’s capital city is built on the shores of the Oslo Fjord surrounded by rolling hills and forests. Parks and open green spaces are an integral part of the landscape of Oslo including the renowned Vigeland Sculpture Park. Other attractions include the Royal Palace, the medieval Akershus Castle which dominates the harbour front and the magnificent modern Opera House made of marble and glass. After our tour of the city we have free time to look around for ourselves; perhaps pay a visit to Oslo’s Bygdøy peninsula, where you’ll find the Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum. There is time to find a local restaurant to enjoy dinner before we return to our hotel.

Of all our European tours, this is the shiniest. For the magpies among us, our Berlin city break is a veritable nest of glittering treasures. Famed for its opulent palaces that date back to the Kingdom of Prussia, we discover a gold mine of lavish Baroque and Rococo architecture, richly decorated Stucco interiors and exquisitely manicured parks. Signature sights include the stunning Sanssouci Palace and Cecilienhof, where the Potsdam Conference took place. There is plenty of time to soak up the vibrant culture of Germany’s fascinating capital city, which has experienced so much change in recent years.
Berlin guided city tour
We get to know the German capital of Berlin. It may be a rather big city but, luckily for us, all the best areas are lovely and compact. Once divided, now reunited, it really is full of contrasts with a variety of historical and modern attractions. We enjoy a guided city tour which covers some of the most important sights including the Brandenburg Gate, a former symbol of the divided city. After our tour, the rest of the day is left free to discover more of Berlin at leisure and, in keeping with its ‘live and let live’ motto, it’s a wonderfully relaxed place to explore. Later, we enjoy dinner together back at the hotel. Schönhausen Palace & River Cruise Schönhausen Palace provided the backdrop for many important political and historical moments. Originally a manor house was built on the site in the 1660s before King Friedrich II gifted it to his wife, who used it as a summer residence and adored the opulent rooms, Stucco ceilings and colourful floral carpets, which we admire during our visit. Later, Wilhelm Pieck used the residence as his official seat during his time as president of the German Democratic Republic after the partition of Germany. The presidential garden is a reminder of this time. Later, we enjoy a river cruise through the centre of the city, taking in a selection of iconic sights from a new perspective. Cameras at the ready for the
fascinating cityscape, including the silhouette of the stunning domed Berlin Cathedral on Museum Island, as we meander along the River Spree.
Berlin Cathedral & Charlottenburg Palace
After spotting the famous cathedral from our river cruise, we get up close with a fascinating visit here. The majestic Italian Renaissance-style structure is flanked by four Baroque towers and envelopes equally lavish interiors, from a marble and onyx altar to elaborate mosaics. It served as the court church for the Hohenzollern dynasty, the monarchy of Prussia and later the German Emperors.
Our next stop is Charlottenburg Palace. Built at the end of the 17th century, it is one of Berlin’s key reminders of the splendour of the Hohenzollern clan, who ruled until 1918. Packed with treasures from the grand Rococo ballroom and collections of precious porcelain to the silver vault; glittering with the remaining pieces of the Prussian crown jewels, there is so much to discover in this former royal residence. The leafy palace park is also well worth a wander after we see the first-ever bathroom in a Baroque palace! Sanssouci Palace & Cecilienhof
We visit Sanssouci Palace for an audio-guided tour. Sans soucI, which means ‘without a care’, was the

much-loved summer retreat of the Prussian King; Friedrich the Great. The Rococo palace sits pretty above the vineyard-festooned terraces, and inside the intimate suites still boast their original decorations. Outside, the sprawling grounds are as impressive as ever, with the Chinese House and Orangery proving to be the most relaxing of hideaways. The king’s grave is on the highest terrace on the hill, buried next to his beloved greyhounds.
Afterwards, we head to Cecilienhof, an English-style mock Tudor curiosity, which seems in stark contrast to the luxurious palaces we have visited so far. Though humble from the outside, this was actually the location where world history was made when the Allied powers met here after the Second World War to discuss the occupation of Germany. Originally built in 1913 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, it was the last palace constructed by the Hohenzollern clan before it went on to serve as the location for the Potsdam Conference, attended by Josef Stalin, Harry Truman and Winston Churchill in 1945.

Our next stop is the charming town of Ponte de Lima, renowned for its wine production and ancient stone bridge, once a vital crossing on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. We enjoy a visit to the home of the Calheiros family for hundreds of years, Paço de Calheiros, an atmospheric manor house with breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards and idyllic Lima Valley. Experience the breathtaking beauty of Croatia, a Mediterranean paradise boasting stunning scenery, azure-blue waters, ancient towns, palm-lined squares, and magnificent forests with rushing waterfalls. Join us on an all-inclusive two-week holiday as we delve into Croatia’s rich history and discover the awe-inspiring scenery at multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites and enjoy our excursion programme staying in stunning locations, including the island of Hvar.
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Trogir
After breakfast, we spend the morning exploring nearby Trogir, a picturesque town that sits on a small island and is known for its charming mix of Renaissance and baroque buildings. The town centre’s striking Venetian architecture has seen it be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making Trogir a must-see destination that can be easily explored on foot. Later, we enjoy a leisurely afternoon at our hotel.
Split & Hvar Island
We start the day with a guided walking tour of Split, the second largest city in Croatia. The Old Town is full of historic charm and boasts medieval streets, cobblestone corners, stunning promenades, and baroque monuments. During our tour, we explore some of the most iconic sights in the city, including the UNESCO-protected palace of the great emperor Diocletian, the mausoleum (now an impressive cathedral), the medieval Venetian castle, and more. Later we take a scenic ferry ride to Hvar Island, our base for the next six nights the Labranda Senses Resort in Vrboska.
Hvar Island Tour
We take a guided tour of Hvar – known as one of the top 10 most beautiful islands in the world! Our tour begins in the stunning harbour town of Jelsa with its stunning harbour, before moving on to see the Stari Grad Plain - an 80-hectare agricultural colony, the picturesque village of Vrboska, also known as the ‘Little Venice of Croatia’, the tranquil village of Brusje and the medieval towns of Stari Grad and Hvar. We finish our tour with a visit to Tvrdalj Castle, formerly the summer residence of Croatian poet Petar Hektorovic.
Omiš
We travel to Omiš, a small town at the mouth of the emerald-green Cetina River. Here there be pirates! Or there used to be, at least. The town was once home to the Pirates of Omiš in the 13th and 14th centuries, who used Sagittae, very fast boats, to raid traders along the Adriatic coast. They would then retreat into the Cetina River where larger ships could not follow them. Nowadays, Omiš is a popular tourist destination and the Old Town is dotted with historical landmarks such as the fortress Mirabella, a 13th-century edifice. Another place worth exploring is the Ffortress Starigrad, located at the mountain peak behind the Old Town.

Journey to the birthplace of Zeus and the Minoan civilization on this epic all-inclusive holiday to Crete! An island known for its diverse landscapes from stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters to rugged mountains and lush valleys, Crete offers a unique blend of natural wonders and ancient history. We explore archaeological sites such as the Palace of Knossos, the city of Heraklion and more, all while discovering the vibrant culture and delicious cuisine on offer. From adventure and relaxation to unearthing an ancient civilization, the enchanting island of Crete has something for everyone.
Heraklion & Knossos Palace
We start the day with a tour of Heraklion, the capital of Crete and one of the island’s most popular cities. This is a city full of ancient history, being home to many civilizations including the Mycenaeans, Romans, Venetians and Ottomans. Traces of these cultures can be found in the fortified Venetian walls and the Valide Mosque. There is so much to see and enjoy, from the vibrant town centre and the modern Daidalo street, named after the legend of Daedalus, the craftsman behind the Labyrinth, to Lion Square with the Morosini Fountain.
Next, we visit Knossos, a Minoan Palace, one of the most famous sites on the island. The palace was home to the legendary King Minos who constructed a large labyrinth to hold the Minotaur. Knossos is steeped in myth and legend, as written by Homer in his Odyssey: “Among their cities is the great city of Knossos, where Minos reigned when nine years old, he that held converse with great Zeus.” During our tour of Knossos, we enjoy wine tasting before returning to our hotel.
Chania & Souda Bay
We head to a wonderful destination and a historically very popular one! Many of the ancient civilizations who settled in Crete stopped over in Chania at one time or another. The result? A flourishing town, with a multicultural blend of architecture, culinary delights and cultural legacy. We enjoy a walking tour of Chania Old Town, exploring the narrow alleyways to find some of the trendiest tavernas and souvenir shops, as well as museums. There is much to see in this truly
beautiful place, a perfect blend of old and new. Afterwards, we travel to the coast and Souda Bay. Here we make time to pay our respects to the fallen soldiers of the Second World War with a visit to the Commonwealth War Cemetery. At the entrance, we find the names of the fallen, all 1, 527 soldiers who bravely fought and died at the Battle of Crete. The brilliant archaeologist John Pendlebury is also buried here, the curator of Knossos from 1930 to 1934, who joined the British Intelligence Service to return to Crete and organise the Resistance when World War Two started.
Lassithi Plateau
We are treated to a trip to the largest mountain plain in Crete. At an altitude of 850m, the Lasithi Plateau runs some 11kn east-west and 6km north-south. On the plateau, we are treated to a breathtaking view of green fields dotted with thousands of small windmills, used for irrigation until a few years ago.
We visit some of the traditional villages on the Plateau such as Krasi, Tzermiado and Ano Kera. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years and the Dictean cave above Psychro is where, according to Greek legends, Zeus was raised.
Arkadi & Margarites
Our first stop of the day is spent exploring Arkadi Monastery. Built in the 12th century, the monastery is one of Crete’s most important monuments. The monastery gained widespread fame after the events of November 1866, when Crete revolted

against the Turks, who had been in control of the island for the previous 200 years.
During the siege, when Turkish soldiers attacked the monastery, the defenders detonated a room filled with gunpowder. This desperate act resulted in the deaths of all the people inside the monastery and most of the Turkish soldiers. It was a tragic measure to avoid it falling into the hands of their enemies. The Monastery of Arkadi has become a symbol of the Cretan struggles for liberation and is one of the most historic monasteries in Crete. The monastery also includes an interesting museum with a great collection of post-Byzantine icons, vestments, manuscripts, banners and other objects related to the 1866 Revolt. Afterwards, we continue to Margarites, a village well-known for its pottery. Keep a look out for some stunning architecture in this charming village, where the pottery-making tradition goes back many generations. Don’t miss the church of Agios which features amazing frescoes from 1383. There are plenty of cafés down lovely narrow streets, to relax in or try a Greek coffee too.

Portugal has it all; sparkling waters fringed by golden sands, charming towns adorned with distinctive blue tiles, sun-soaked cities filled with history as well as spectacular wine-making regions. On this Star Value holiday, we stay in two different resorts and explore the highlights of the country, from Coimbra and Lisbon to Braga and Porto, with a visit to an authentic Port cellar and a delicious tasting included. We also explore some lesser-known gems, where ancient UNESCO World Heritage Sites, indulgent local treats and fascinating stories await around every corner.
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Praia da Veira & Marinha Grande
We take a guided walking tour of Praia da Veira to get our bearings. Still a fishing community, it has plenty to offer its visitors along the pretty seafront. Later, we head to the nearby town of Marinha Grande, the centre for Portugal’s glass industry. To find out more about its history, we visit the Glass Museum, located on the site of the country’s first major glassworks and full of beautiful items from the 17th century to the present day.
Óbidos, Nazaré & Alcobaça
We head to picturesque Óbidos, a designated UNESCO Creative City and City of Literature, surrounded by a fortified wall. There are famously 14 bookstores here, with one of them housed in a church, as well as a preserved castle, charming squares and a tangle of pretty streets lined with whitewashed houses. Next, we spend some time in the picturesque town, fishing community and surfing mecca of Nazaré. Our last stop of the day is Alcobaça to visit its spectacular monastery. Founded by King Alfonso I in the 12th century, this UNESCO-listed gem is a splendid example of Cisterian Gothic architecture, complete with a Monk’s Room, Dormitory, Chapter House, Refectory and more (please note that entrance to the cloisters is not included).
Coimbra
We head to the city of Coimbra, once Portugal’s medieval capital and home to a prestigious university. Originally founded in 1290 in Lisbon and relocated in 1527, its historic buildings are a delight to explore – don’t miss the baroque library, where its 18th-century walls are lined with elaborate frescoes, thousands of books and beautiful golden detailing. The city is also renowned for its many monuments that represent each chapter of Coimbra’s history as
well as the Igreja de Santa Cruz, one of the country’s most significant churches due to its Gothic royal tombs, a 15th-century frieze depicting the Age of Discovery and a 4,000-pipe organ which only four people can play.
Viana do Castelo
We take a guided walking tour of Viana do Castelo, which features beautiful religious architecture, lovely riverside walks and a charming Costume Museum which delves into Portuguese traditions and embroidery. Its port was once one of the gateways to the country, where brave explorers and traders returned from their voyages to the new world, and built its wealth through the wine, salt, textile, ceramic and glass industries.
Porto
We travel to Porto with its lovely waterfront, local delicacies, quirky street art and stunning Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site plaited with atmospheric alleyways, historical buildings and fado houses. We include entrance to one of Porto’s most distinguished buildings, the Palácio da Bolsa, built in the 19th century to provide a dignified setting for the city’s merchants and to impress international business visitors. One of the most notable features of the Stock Exchange Palace is its stunning interior, which features the famous Arab Room. This room, inspired by the Alhambra in Granada, is adorned with intricate Moorish Revival architecture and lavish decorations, making it a popular attraction for tourists and a venue for official receptions. Later on, we also head to a renowned Port cellar for a tasting of this fortified wine – a must-do while in this special Portuguese city!

Braga & Guimarães
We take a guided tour of Braga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the third largest city in Portugal. The vibrant metropolis offers a wonderful mix of baroque churches, narrow streets and delightful squares soundtracked by the regular chiming of bells, as well as the oldest cathedral in the country, built centuries ago, on the ruins of a Roman temple. We then continue with a guided tour of Guimarães, where the first king of Portugal, Alfonso Henrique, was born in 1110.
As a previous European Capital of Culture and with a UNESCO-listed old quarter, there’s plenty to see amongst its warren of ancient lanes, or the café-lined plazas offer the perfect setting to enjoy a Portuguese coffee. Just one of the city’s highlights is the Ducal Palace, ordered to be built in the 1400s and once occupied by the first Dukes of Braganza. Fall in love with Europe’s greatest river as we sail on the Rhine from Cologne through Strasbourg and onto Koblenz in Germany. Discover the history and beauty of the Rhine Valley with its scenic landscapes, castles and legends, delve into German wine culture and enjoy a guided walking tour of lovely Koblenz. There’s plenty to enjoy on board too, including entertainment, a spa and vast sun deck, the perfect spot to sit back and relax as we drift through panoramic scenes of fairytale towns, impressive peaks and rolling terraces.
Rüdesheim
After a morning sailing on the scenic Upper Middle Rhine we arrive at the town of Rüdesheim (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), renowned the world over for its outstanding wines. Be sure to take a walk through the charming little streets of the Old Town, home to Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar’. Germersheim (Speyer)
We sail through the historical heart of Europe, enjoying some of the most picture-perfect sights of our Rhine cruise with terraced vineyards, expansive forests and high peaks. Spend the day in the relaxed riverside town of Germersheim or opt to travel to nearby Heidelberg, one of Germany’s oldest cities and once home to Germany’s oldest university. Our tour manager takes us on a walking tour of the city to see the town square in the Altstadt (Old Town) the ruins of Heidelberg Castle and the Gothic Heiliggeistkirche church towers over the cafe-lined Marktplatzare and other notable key landmarks.

Nestled in the point where the Black Forest spills into the Alsace region, this German town shares a lot with its French neighbours; its love of delicious food and good wine among them.
The capital of the Grand Est region, formerly known as Alsace, Strasbourg sits on the border (the river itself being the border) with Germany. We moor up in Kehl on the German side; it’s a leisurely stroll across the bridge into Strasbourg, or take a local bus, taxi or optional excursion. Explore the Old Town with quaint colourful houses and twisting alleys, the canals of Petit France and the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral. Discover the wonderful Alto-Douro Valley and join us for an immersive seven-night cruise of gastronomic delights, culture and history surrounded by truly spectacular vistas. Beginning in Porto, famed for its colourful merchant houses and splendid Old Town, we follow the famous River Douro as our cruise laces its way across the border between Portugal and Spain; its banks peppered with enchanting vineyards, unspoilt walled villages, peaceful hillsides and sun-drenched terraces crammed with olive groves. This is an enchanting tour of sleepy villages and charming towns, with sumptuous dining experiences and a few culinary and cultural evenings of entertainment thrown in for good measure! There’s also the opportunity to visit the ancient Spanish city of Salamanca, renowned for its sun-lit golden hues, on a delightful optional tour. At the end of our cruise, there is the option to spend two nights in Porto to discover more of this stunning city, filled with picturesque riverside buildings, unique street art, fascinating museums and charming cafés selling the tempting Portuguese staple, pastel de natas.
Régua & Pinhão
We sail to Régua; the largest town on the banks of the Douro in this wine-growing valley. Being such a beautiful place it’s no wonder the Alto Douro region has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The town played a fundamental role in the production and marketing of port wine, which was transported away by sailing boat from as early as the 18th century. Take the opportunity to join an excursion to Lamego available from Régua and spend the day visiting one of Portugal’s most famous pilgrimage sites. Our next stop is the peaceful town of Pinhão. Located in the famous port wine region, in an area where the Douro and its surrounding landscape are at their most picturesque, the town is encircled by enchanting vineyards and the quintas that produce the wine. The town is also famed for its train station covered in blue and white azulejo tiles depicting various scenes of Portuguese life. From Pinhão, visit the nearby Quinta da Avessada for an included tour, wine tasting and local evening dinner at the Quinta.
Spend two nights at the Eurostars Heroismo Hotel, located just 2km from the Romanesque Porto Cathedral. So often hotels receive different ratings from different authorities. To avoid any surprises and give you added peace of mind, we have created JG hotel ratings based upon our knowledge of hotels and customer feedback so you know what to expect and are sure you're choosing the right hotel for you.
Hotels with a JG2 rating are a mixture of larger hotels and privately owned properties. Décor and furnishings may be simple but are clean and well maintained. All bedrooms have en-suite facilities, TV and may have tea/coffee-making facilities. Food may be buffet style in some of the larger hotels. Services may be limited but efficient.
JG2+ rated hotels offer a slightly higher standard of hospitality, often with good home cooking plus enhanced décor, facilities and services, which is recognised and welcomed by our customers. Food may be buffet style in some of the larger hotels. They may also enjoy an enviable location and/or higher levels of satisfaction on online hotel rating sites and our own customer feedback surveys.
Hotels with a JG3 rating tend to be a more formal style of hotel, often part of a hotel chain, or are very-welcoming family-owned properties. Generally, they offer a greater range of facilities and services, and bedrooms tend to be a little more spacious with additional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seating, bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or waiter service.
Entry & Exit system for visiting the EU (EES)
All non-EU nationals travelling to a European country will be subject to checks at the border.
The EES system replaces passport stamping and automates border control procedures collecting and recording the data in your passport, your date and place of entry and exit from a European country and also your facial image and fingerprints. In most cases these checks will be carried out upon arrival in the EU when arriving by air, however, due to the dual French and UK border arrangements in Dover, these checks will take place in Dover for coach passengers, prior to boarding the ship for the cross-channel sailing. All travellers will be required to disembark the coach and pass through the automated EES kiosks for the checks to take place, once complete the coach will have a seal attached to the door and proceed to the port and check-in for the ferry. Customers will no longer therefore be able to join the coach at the port of Dover and the last joining point will now become Stop 24 services on the M20.
JG3+ hotels typically enjoy higher levels of satisfaction on both online hotel rating sites and our own customer satisfaction surveys and may enjoy superior locations close to resort attractions or surrounded by spectacular scenery.
Accommodation in our JG4 category is of an even higher standard, typically offering a wide range of facilities and services. Bedrooms are designed to make your stay the most comfortable possible and the staff provide a service that reflects the detail and quality. You can also expect higher standards of food and beverages.
During the first half of 2025 the rules of travel to Europe will change and there will be an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals. Travellers will be required to make an online application for and obtain an ETIAS travel authorisation to enter most EU countries, a fee of €7 will be charged. Once confirmed this is linked to your passport and will be valid for 3 years or until your passport expires if that is sooner. If you get a new passport, you will need a new ETIAS travel authorisation. You must carry the email confirming your successful ETIAS submission and unique ETIAS application number along with your passport when travelling as both documents will be checked at the border.
ETIAS is not required for Crown Dependencies – Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, or the common travel areas of Northern and Southern Ireland.

If you or your travelling companions have any mobility concerns, please inform us at the time of booking. It is a minimum requirement that you are able to climb the steps onto a coach unaided. Please read the tour itinerary carefully to make sure it is appropriate for your mobility level. We also hold accessibility information for each hotel featured on our holidays, and are able to advise if lifts and/or ground floor rooms are available. Further details are shown in this brochure and are also available online at nationalholidays.com/accessibility. If you have any queries on hotel facilities in relation to mobility, please contact us immediately for detailed information. Please note: some of our tours, hotels or excursions may require some level of walking and/or mobility. As a general guideline, we recommend that you are comfortable to stroll for 20-30 minutes at a time. Concert, theatre and sporting venues typically have tiered seating with a number of steps to reach your seat. Lifts may be available to some levels and there may be a dedicated accessible area, although this isn’t guaranteed. Please be aware that some clients may find tours visiting older properties challenging due to the nature of the building. On our river cruises, there is no lift between decks on any of the ships, stairways are usually steep and at ports of call there will be some walking into town and city centres. If you are uncertain or would like more details, please call our friendly reservations team for more information on the specific tour you are interested in.
