OCE AN CRUISING 2020 A more traditional and leisurely style cruising experience
Presenting
CLASSIC CRUISE EXPERIENCES... SHIPS OF CHARACTER All the cruises featured in this brochure are on smaller, more personal ships which offer a more traditional and leisurely cruising experience. These classic ships retain the style and understated quality of a country house hotel with the emphasis very much on providing a welcoming, attentive service within a friendly and relaxed ‘home from home’ atmosphere. These smaller-sized ships are also accessible to more ports of call than much larger resort ships, often sailing enchanting waterways that larger ships simply can’t navigate.
EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY A scenic cruising holiday is an enriching experience, combining lazy days at sea and ever-changing vistas with exciting itineraries to fascinating places (complemented by a selection of optional shore excursions). With fantastic on-board facilities, activities, food and entertainment, simply relax and enjoy the cruise experience to the full while creating memories to last a lifetime.
SHORE EXCURSIONS To enhance the enjoyment of your cruise, Cruise & Maritime Voyages offer a programme of optional shore excursions which will be available at extra cost in advance of the cruise departure for pre-registration. Please note certain ports may only be accessible by the use of a smaller tender vessel.

Geiranger Flåm Bergen
Dundee Newcastle
8 Days from £659
Flåm, Norway
MAJESTIC FJORDLAND SATURDAY 25 TH APRIL TO SATURDAY 2 ND MAY 2020 A week long escape and fantastic opportunity to cruise Norway’s dramatic ice-carved fjords. Experience breathtaking scenery as you sail to picturesque villages nestled in the very heart of fjordland. At each port of call a full programme of optional excursions takes you closer to an incredible landscape of majestic snow-capped mountains, granite cliffs and tumbling waterfalls.
ITINERARY Day 1 – Home pickup & embarkation in Newcastle
A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home for your comfortable journey in a top specification car so you can begin your holiday in style. On arrival at Newcastle Port, we board the Magellan and begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.
Day 2 – Dundee, Scotland
We arrive in Dundee, Scotland’s fourth largest city, situated on the north bank of the Tay estuary. This dynamic and compact city is not only a UNESCO City of Design, but also home to the V&A Museum of Design Dundee, the world’s only V&A museum outside of London. The city’s past is celebrated in a number of ways. These include Discovery Point, where RRS Discovery is on view, and the Verdant Works, one of Dundee’s best known jute mills recreated to reflect the everyday experience of so many past Dundonians.
Day 3 – At Sea / Day 4 – Bergen, Norway
After a day at leisure on the ship, we cruise into Bergen. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city. Yet with a population of less than a quarter of a million, it has the feel of a small town. It is beautifully sited against a backdrop of seven mountains and the funicular ride to the summit of Mount Fløien affords wonderful panoramic views of Bergen and Norway’s attractive coastline. Overlooking the harbour the colourful Bryggen wharf is the face of Bergen. The characteristic wooden gabled buildings were once the home and offices of Hanseatic merchants but today house shops selling crafts and traditional souvenirs.
Day 5 – Cruising Geirangerfjord & Geiranger, Norway
We cruise the stunningly beautiful Geirangerfjord to Geiranger. From a small farming village that was relatively isolated in the 1800s, Geiranger has grown into one of Norway’s most popular tourist resorts. It sits at the head of the Geirangerfjord against a backdrop of splendid mountain scenery. From Geiranger steep mountain roads snake their way up to dizzying heights and panoramic views that are quite literally breathtaking. Snow dusted peaks, wild tumbling waterfalls, lush green valleys and dramatic gorges stretch as far as the eye can see with their reflections in the mirror-calm waters of the incredible Geirangerfjord far below.
Day 6 – Cruising Sognefjord & Flåm, Norway Geiranger,Barbados Norway
We cruise along the Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway. With steep mountain slopes meeting
See pages 28 - 31 for dates, cabin types and prices
the water’s shores, we take in the impressive vistas before arriving in Flåm. Surrounded by towering mountains the tiny village of Flåm, with some 500 inhabitants, nestles at the head of Aurlandsfjord, the innermost arm of the mighty Sognefjord. Its popularity as a tourist destination began in the late 19th century with the arrival of steamships carrying English and German passengers including Europe’s royals attracted by the salmon fishing in the Flåm River. Today’s visitors are drawn to Flåm for a chance to ride on one of the world’s steepest and most spectacular railways. A masterpiece of engineering, Flåm Railway twists and turns through the steepsided Flåm Valley amidst some of Norway’s most breathtaking mountain scenery.
Bergen, Norway
Day 7 – At Sea / Day 8 – Disembarkation in Newcastle
After a day at sea, we arrive back in Newcastle where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home – a luxurious and stress-free way to end your holiday.

Olden Flåm Bergen Aberdeen Newcastle
8 Days from £649
Mount Fløien funicular
AUTUMN FJORDLAND THURSDAY 24 TH SEPTEMBER TO THURSDAY 1 ST OCTOBER 2020 From the rail of Marco Polo enjoy the kaleidoscope of awe-inspiring fjordland scenery where green hills, cascading waterfalls and majestic mountains are truly spectacular. Visits to picturesque towns and idyllic fjord villages promise a host of new and exciting experiences. And with its colourful Hanseatic waterfront and spectacular Mount Fløyen funicular, Bergen is the perfect end to this week long cruise.
ITINERARY Day 1 – Home pickup & embarkation in Newcastle
A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home for your comfortable journey in a top specification car so you can begin your holiday in style. On arrival at Newcastle Port, we board the Marco Polo and begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.
The creeping pitted tentacle of ice features in optional excursions from Olden together with glorious waterfalls, glacier fed rivers and wonderful mountain lakes.
Day 2 – Aberdeen, Scotland
We arrive in Aberdeen, Scotland’s third city. This thriving and cosmopolitan port city is famous for its stunning granite buildings and monuments and blends historic attractions with a long sandy coastline. The city also has two Old Towns: Old Aberdeen with its cobbled streets and 15th-century fortified cathedral and Footdee, a quirky fishing quarter at the water’s edge with squares of tiny cottages.
Day 3 – At Sea / Day 4 – & Olden, Norway
Cruising Nordfjord
After a day at leisure on the ship, we cruise the beautiful Nordfjord, the sixth longest fjord in Norway, situated between the largest mainland glacier in Europe and Norway’s wildest coast at the western cape. The southernmost of the three short branches at the inner end of Nordfjord terminates in Olden. The charming village sits amongst tidy, well-kept farms on gently sloping, fertile hillsides, which then rise steeply into thickly wooded and rugged peaks. From the village the beautiful Oldendalen Valley runs between towering mountains to the edge of the mighty Jostedalsbreen Glacier. Day 5 –
Cruising Sognefjord & Flåm, Norway
We cruise along the Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway. With steep mountain slopes meeting the water’s shores, we take in the impressive vistas before arriving in Flåm.

The city is home to a rich variety of historical sites, museums and art galleries. The Nidaros Cathedral was built over the grave of St Olav, Norway’s patron saint whose reputation shone far beyond the borders of his country. The Cathedral has an impressive West Wall, richly ornamented in stone with magnificent stained glass windows. It is a sight to behold and a ‘must see’ for any visitor to Trondheim.
Day 5 – At Sea / Day 6 – Narvik, Norway
After a day at sea, we visit Narvik. Modern Narvik was the first industrial town in Northern Norway. It was given town status in 1902 when the Ofoten Railway was completed to haul iron ore from Kiruna in Sweden to the ice-free port of Narvik. Narvik became the focus of the world’s attention in 1940 and five years of German occupation are documented in the Nordland Red Cross War Memorial Museum. The cable car on Narvikfjellet Mountain opens up an incredible bird’s eye view of the town and dramatic landscape around Ofotfjorden. Outside the town in the Salagsdalen Valley is one of the world’s northernmost zoos.
Day 7 – At Sea / Day 8 –
Barentsburg, Norway
After a day at leisure enjoying the ship’s facilities, we drop anchor in Barentsburg – a small mining settlement on the shores of the beautiful Grønfjord with a population that is almost entirely made up of Russians and Ukrainians. Barentsburg is named after Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz, who discovered Svalbard in 1596. During World War II, Barentsburg came under heavy fire and was virtually destroyed however while the buildings here today are relatively new, the place still has a historic feel to it.
Day 9 – Longyearbyen, Norway
Today we visit Longyearbyen, which enjoys a superb backdrop including two glacier tongues. Day 10 – At Sea / Day 11 – Honningsvåg for North Cape, Norway

The ’city’ lies on the south-eastern side of a large island called Magerøya in the Barents Sea. It is the starting point of excursions to the dramatic North Cape where from a high plateau the monumental 307-metre high cliff plunges into the Atlantic. From here only endless ocean lies between the northernmost point of Europe and the North Pole.
Days 12 & 13 – At Sea See pages 28 - 31 for dates, cabin types and prices
Day 14 – Ålesund, Norway
We arrive in Ålesund. In 1904 a fire swept through Ålesund leaving the town in ashes. It was rebuilt in the then fashionable art nouveau style. Buildings with turrets and towers and facades with medieval romantic ornamentation add a quirky charm to the town that is considered the most beautiful in Norway. From the park 418 steps lead to the summit of Mount Aksla, which affords wonderful views of Ålesund, built on islands stretching into the sea. In an elaborate building that was the former Swan Pharmacy, the Jugendstilsenteret celebrates the town’s unique architectural history.
Day 15 – Cruising Boknafjord & Stavanger, Norway

Honfleur
state-of-the-art, six-storey building, Titanic Belfast relives the city’s golden era and traces the story of the ill-fated liner built in the shipyards of Harland & Wolff. At the heart of today’s cosmopolitan city is Belfast’s elegant City Hall, which stands in Donegal Square. The extraordinary Giant’s Causeway is a popular excursion from this city with omnipresent Irish charm.

Day 7 – Casablanca for Marrakech, Morocco
Located on the western coast of Africa, cosmopolitan Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city with a thriving tourism trade. Blending the modern world with the ancient, Casablanca can be accurately described as a cultural melting pot with clear African, Arabic and European influences. The city’s many parks, fountains and recognisably Art Deco flourishes are all courtesy of the French Protectorate who made the city their administrative centre in the early part of the 20th century. Highlights include the impressive Hassan II Mosque, the ornate Mauresque architecture and gleaming white 1930s buildings immortalised in the classic film starring Humphrey Bogart.
Days 8 & 9 – Cádiz for Seville, Spain
The oldest continuously populated city in Spain, Cádiz is a unique ocean port in south west Spain that has been inhabited for the last 3,000 years. Located on a peninsula jutting into the Gulf of Cádiz, the city is surrounded almost entirely by water and thanks to its historical trade links, it has many foreign influences that are still visible today. Narrow cobbled streets, small squares and weather-beaten buildings dating back to the Moors make the old city a charming place to explore with look-out towers used by merchants to spot returning trade ships scattered along the skyline.
Day 10 – At Sea / Day 11 – Leixões for Oporto, Portugal
After a day at leisure enjoying the ship’s facilities, we arrive in Leixões. Situated just north of the mouth of the River Douro, Leixões is one of Portugal’s major seaports and a gateway to Oporto. Optional excursions feature the country’s second city that is known throughout the world as the home of the famous port wine. A boat trip on the River Douro gives a different view of the city where dark buildings seem to be stacked one on another along the narrow, labyrinthine streets. In Oporto’s São Bento Station traditional tile panels depict the history of Portugal. Oporto is home to the Museum of the Tram giving insight into this traditional and often preferred mode of transport.
Day 12 – At Sea / Day 13 – Cobh for Cork, Ireland

The ‘Queenstown Story’ is a wonderful exhibition telling of this rich maritime history. A charming little town, Cobh is a gateway to the city of Cork and excursions to Ireland’s legendary Blarney Castle.

Helsinki, Finland and spires. Wrapped within the original medieval wall, which is studded with imaginatively named towers, the Castle, onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Town Hall Square and Gothic Town Hall survive along with the aura of the 14th and 15th centuries. Just outside the city Rocca al Mare is an open-air museum of Estonia’s rural architecture from the 18th to the 20th centuries.

Day 10 – Helsinki, Finland
Finland’s capital is our port of call today. Helsinki is a vibrant, modern city, yet very much in harmony with the surrounding nature. Its centrepiece is the majestic Senate Square lined with elegant neoclassical buildings and the impressive Lutheran Cathedral with white Corinthian columns and five green cupolas. A striking exception to Helsinki’s general architectural style is the Russian Orthodox, onion-domed Uspenski Cathedral, which stands on a hill at the end of Market Square and dominates the city skyline. Built into solid rock Temppeliaukio Church is also somewhat unusual. Museums are plentiful with the National Museum of Finland, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design Museum amongst the most notable.
Day 11 – Stockholm, Sweden
St Petersburg, Russia
Copenhagen
We cruise to Stockholm today. Approached through an archipelago of some 24,000 islands and islets, Sweden’s stately and spacious capital is itself built on 14 islands connected by some 50 bridges. Founded in 1252, Stockholm grew up around Gamla Stan. The charming Old Town is a maze of medieval alleys and tiny lanes lined with 16th century buildings some of which feature wroughtiron signs symbolising ancient craft workers’ guilds. A delightful mix of parkland and forest, Royal Djurgården is Stockholm’s city park. The island is home to the magnificent Vasa Museum housing a salvaged 17th century Swedish warship that sank on its maiden voyage.
Aarhus, Denmark
Day 12 – At Sea / Day 13 – Aarhus, Denmark
After a day at sea, we visit Aarhus. Situated on the Jutland peninsula’s east coast, Aarhus is Denmark’s second-largest city and proudly held the title of European Capital of Culture in 2017. Small yet scholarly, this town boasts architectural landmarks, an old harbour and impressive rooftop artwork – there is plenty to explore here.
Day 14 – At Sea / Day 15 – Disembarkation in London Tilbury
After a day at leisure on the ship, we arrive back in London Tilbury where we disembark and are met by our chauffeur for the journey home – a luxurious and stress-free way to end your holiday.
Days 8 & 9 – St Petersburg, Russia
We arrive in St Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 as his ‘Window on the West’. Drawing inspiration from Europe, the Russian Tsar and his successors created an extraordinary city on the banks of the River Neva with opulent palaces, ornate churches and splendid parks all part of the supremely elegant architectural ensemble. The magnificent Hermitage and its priceless treasures of art, grandeur of Catherine’s Palace at Pushkin and gilded fountains in the gardens at Peterhof illustrate the lavish lifestyle of Russia’s former ruling elite. The birthplace of Russian ballet, St Petersburg is the perfect place to take in the performing arts.

Day 3 – Kirkwall, Orkney Islands
A uniformed chauffeur will collect you from home for your comfortable journey in a top specification car so you can begin your holiday in style. On arrival at London Tilbury Cruise Terminal, we board the Marco Polo and begin our journey, taking time to relax in our cabins or on deck and enjoying the use of the ship’s range of leisure facilities.
Today we arrive in Kirkwall. The capital of the amazing Orkney archipelago, the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall sits almost exactly in the centre of Mainland, dividing the island into East and West. The magnificent St Magnus Cathedral, a legacy of the town’s rich Viking heritage, dominates Kirkwall’s skyline. In its shadow, the town is a cluster of grey stone buildings lining narrow, flagstone streets. Excursions explore these beautiful islands whose history can be traced back some 6,000 years through Neolithic standing stones and the magnificent archaeological site of Skara Brae. Modern day Orkney is a hive of creative activity and its craft workshops are perfect for a special souvenir.
Day 4 – Kollafjørður, Faroe Islands
Kollafjørdur is a small fishing port on the Faroe island of Streymoy. Initially there were just a few dwellings adjoining the village church, which dating from 1837 is a typical black-tarred wooden building with white painted windows and a turf roof. Today, although it is home to less than a thousand people, the village stretches over four miles along the northern shore of the Kollafjørdur Fjord. From the port of Kollafjørdur optional excursions visit the island communities that live on this isolated archipelago where the landscape is both wild and dramatic. Faroe Islands

Day 5 – Eskifjörður, Iceland
Eskifjördur is a charming, yet isolated, coastal village that lies in the middle of Iceland’s East Fjords, a stunning landscape sculpted by ice age glaciers. Not surprisingly the sea has shaped village culture and industry and the Maritime Museum gives insight into how the nature, upon which the community depend, has also seen them adopt self-sufficiency. Further along the coast is a famous spar mine, where some of Iceland’s largest spar crystals have been found. The mine features in optional excursions along with the Maritime Museum, and the Icelandic Wartime Museum which recounts Iceland’s WWII history.

In Greenlandic, Kangerlussuaq means “big Fjord” and long before Europeans arrived in Kangerlussuaq, the area was a favourite residence of the Inuit. Dating back some 4,000 years, the Saqquaq culture found the area to be a rich hunting ground and the ideal location for a bountiful summer settlement. The town went on to become a U.S. airbase in WWII but today you can experience some of Greenland’s greatest active experiences from here.
Day 15 –
Qaqortoq, Greenland
The largest town in South Greenland, Qaqortoq was founded in 1775 and still reveals some examples of colonial-period architecture. It is known as one of the most charming towns in all of Greenland with a pleasant town centre and a small square with Greenland’s oldest fountain. Qaqortoq, formerly known as Julianehåb in honour of Queen Juliana Maria of Denmark, was officially founded by Anders Olsen, a merchant from Norway in 1755 however it has been populated continuously for many years dating back to the Saqqaq people with tools and artefacts discovered that were over 4,300 years old.

Containing an airport, converted from the airbase built during World War II by the Americans, Narsarsuag also features the unique Arboretum Groenlandicum, an Arctic botanical garden that is home to more than 110 species of trees stretching across 15 hectares.
