Once upon a time there was a deep, dark forest whittled with cavernous valleys, cascading with tendrils of waterfalls and dotted with tiny, timber farmhouses. From the fairy tale Black Forest to the spectacular scenery of the grape-laden Rhine and Moselle river valleys, we discover a story-book mix of cobblestone streets, gabled houses and riverbanks cross-stitched with sloping vineyards and magical castles on this lovely getaway.
ITINERARY
Day 1
Ferry to Calais and overnight stay in France on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2
We continue on to our hotel in Oberharmersbach where we stay for four nights. We stop en route in Strasbourg, famous for its spellbinding cathedral and jumble of pretty half-timbered houses.
Day 3 Titisee & Freiburg
We head first to Titisee, one of the Black Forest’s most beautiful lakes. Shimmering with hues of green and blue, this glacial lake is tasselled with peaceful bays and shrouded woodland walks. Afterwards, we make our way to Germany’s warmest city. Blessed with 2,000 hours of sunshine each year, Freiburg is like stepping into a postcard, complete with medieval gabled townhouses, a carpet of quaint cobblestones and many enticing cafés dotted along the canal.
Day 4 Scenic Black Forest
Today we explore the Black Forest, crammed with miles of scenic roads snaking their way underneath a blanket of enormous evergreens. We have time to discover a trio of quaint towns including the riverside Schiltach, with its riot of half-timbered raft-builder houses, the pretty, Roman-rooted town of Rottweil, lined with a jumble of colourful houses, and waterfall-rich Triberg, made famous as the home of the original Black Forest gateau recipe and birthplace of the first ever cuckoo clock.
Day 5 Day at leisure in Oberharmersbach Day 6 Heidelberg
We leave Oberharmersbach and head to the beautiful town of Heidelberg. Built on the banks of the River Neckar, the city is surrounded by lush green hills and boasts a castle and Baroque-style Old Town full of grand and beautifully-preserved buildings. We continue on to our hotel, where we stay for the next four nights.
Day 7 Scenic Rhine
We take a scenic drive alongside the Rhine, one of the most picturesque waterways in Europe. Sit back and relax as we make our way through a landscape of scenic valleys and gorges scattered with dramatic hilltop churches, terraced vineyards and delightful riverside towns.
Day 8 Moselle Valley
We explore another one of Germany’s most beautiful valleys. The banks of the Moselle River are knitted with a patchwork of romantic wine villages, elegant villas and towering castles clutching onto the wooded slopes.
Day 9 Rüdesheim
We enjoy a scenic drive to explore the picturesque wine-making town of Rüdesheim. Its lovely streets, including the charming, cobbled Drosselgasse, are packed with wine taverns, restaurants and half-timbered buildings.
Day 10
Travel back to Calais for our return ferry home. YOUR BREAK INCLUDES
